While hanging out at my friend’s work on Tuesday(june 7th), workers were tearing down an abandoned house next door and they found 4 newborn kittens when they tore open the ceiling. the mother got scared and ran away and we waited for an hour for her to come back, but she never did. So i put them in a box and took them to the shelter, but the shelter refused to take them this young and told me they would just have to put them to sleep. I would never forgive myself if I let them do that to them, so I took them home. I had to separate them because they were starting to suck on eachothers genitals, so i have them in two carriers(2 in each with a piece of cardboard down the middle keeping them away from eachother) with a heating pad under a blanket in the middle of each carrier. So far i’ve been bottle-feeding them every two hours and they arent having any troubles peeing. But so far i’ve only gotten 2 of them to poop only once. How long is too long for them to go without pooping? Also, if anyone has any other advice to make this a little bit easier for me, please don’t hesitate! I’m a senior in high school and im juggling these little guys and studying for my final exams that are next week! My mom tries to help me out with feeding them, but she just does’nt understand how to get them to latch on to the bottle, which causes her to panic and leave me with them.

Hi! Sounds like you have yourself a handful! Thanks for taking care of these babies. Once you start feeding them and getting their tummies full they shouldn’t latch onto each other and can benefit from each other’s warmth. Keep an eye on them though. The links above go into great detail about raising orphan kittens.

Is there anyway you can get mom? Perhaps that rescue can lend you a humane trap to catch her with and she would take care of the babies.

Anyway come back anytime because others will come and add info and answer any questions you have. And welcome to TDK!

Also getting orphan kittens to poop is a frequent topic here so I’ll add the tag and there are many threads. Handraised kittens don’t always poop everyday and as long as they are eating and acting comfortable(their tummy isn’t hard) they are ok for now.

Thank you for this info! :)I was getting their tummies full, but they would start sucking on eachother in their sleep ๐Ÿ™ so far, no one’s seen the mom at the property since, so it does’nt look like shes coming back, but as soon as someone spots her, ill try to get a trap! they seem confortable because they are constantly purring after i feed them, but their tummies feel slightly hard…is that just from build up because they havent pooped?

Despite what the websites say, kittens don’t have to poop every day (though I’d be worried by about the third day) and powdered KMR does seem to be a bit constipating. Also, sometimes, if they’re just on formula, you can mistake their not very solid poop for smelly urine. I’d give them a bit longer yet. You are wonderful for taking on these babies and BC has given you some great sites to help.

thank you both so much! im gonna keep trying to get them to poop! finally during the last feeding, i was able to get a small amount from one of the ones who hasnt pooped yet…but i can tell the calico wants to go, but its just having troubles. I called this rescue organization that’s been talking me through some stuff and she said to put a drop of mineral oil in 5cc’s of formula and feed it to the ones who are having troubles going. do you guys agree that this would help?

    Hello,

I do think the mineral oil might help. Have you been stimulating them so they will go poo?

Do check out the websites Buttercup posted, they have lots of information. Good luck and keep us updated on these little ones.

problems again ๐Ÿ™ they started having troubles pooping again, so i was advised by my rescue person to give them a few drops of mineral oil in 5cc’s of formula about 3 times a day. its making them poop a little bit and its very mushy, but im not sure what the size of a normal amount of poop should be for them daily at this age. by the way, they will be about two weeks old tomorrow! and two of them have eyes! ๐Ÿ˜€
