Hi, Laura, unfortunately, there is not really any way to diagnose his skin condition from a photo, we are not vets, but I can tell you that if it is ringworm, applying a little betadine will kill it. A fungal topical cream for humans will also deal with it but you would have to make sure that it was safe to use on cats. Ringworm is incredibly easily spread — it is millions of tiny spores which inhabit the animal’s bedding, and any other animals and humans who share his environment can also get it. Click on the pink tag ‘ringworm’ for more advice and also Google it. But if your friend can get him to a vet, that is always the best thing.
