I’d love those costumes! Have to do something with my useless History degrees! Actually, I did some research and translation for the “Apocalypse” series about WWI.
I knew someone who was in the Resistance in Normandy when he was a very young man – as young as Harry the kid in X Company but much taller, and gangly the way overly tall teenagers are. He is still alive, and very old of course (about as old as Renzo!)
I also have a Parisian friend some years younger who was of Italian-Jewish origin who had to wear the yellow star in Paris. Her parents bought her roller skates – a big expense for them then – because she was no longer allowed to play in parks there, and her little friends would go out in the streets to share the skates. Their lives were saved by an Italian fascist bureaucrat who delivered them a certificate of “Aryanity”. Knowing Italy well, doubtless a combination of sncere human feeling and corruption. She is still alive and well, retired now of course.
Renzo is meowing at me to go to bed, and since he actually has seniority, I must obey!!!
Happy St Pat’s everyone! I’d like to make a stew with stout, but I’ve been avoiding red meat. Do I still observe Lent on some level???
