    Hi,
Haven’t been here in a while, but I thought this is the place to get good advice. My littermates are 6 years old, and a month ago one of them had a urinary problem which apparently was due to stress of having a handyman in the house. Her sister is fearless, so she was fine! Coupled with my being preoccupied and not changing the litter as often and her hiding for hours, maybe holding her urine in for too long, not sticking to half wet food and half dry (more dry was easier), she developed a problem urinating. Fortunately, with removing the stressor, changing her food to Purina ProPlan urinary formula which I mix with plenty of water, almost no dry food (maybe a tablespoon a day if that) and Tinkle Tonic, she is just fine! I’m even playing with her more, and she is running around like a kitten once again! Her sister loves this new food, too. In fact, I have never seen them enjoy their food so much or drink so much diluted gravy (which is great since they are not water drinkers). So what is my concern? I have always fed them what I considered premium food which I researched so as to avoid anything questionable. They never liked any of the wet foods very much, just ate reluctantly, but loved the crunchies. Now this Purina ProPlan Focus food would be the answer if I weren’t worried about the less than optimal ingredients. Here is the list: Thinking GMO Soy flour, first ingredient being meat by-products and grains:

Water Sufficient for Processing, Meat By-Products, Chicken, Wheat Gluten, Corn Starch-Modified, Artificial and Natural Flavors, Soy Flour, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Tricalcium Phosphate, Salt, Added Color, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K Activity), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Biotin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Potassium Iodide.

I just ordered another Purina selection called Beyond which looks a lot better: Grain-free turkey, sweet potato and spinach:
Ingredients: Poultry Broth, Turkey, Chicken, Liver, Dried Egg Product, Sweet Potato, Spinach, Potato Starch, Natural Flavor, Guar Gum, Sodium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Taurine, Choline Chloride, Ferrous Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Oxide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate, Potassium Iodide, Niacin Supplement, Manganese Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Folic Acid

I’m thinking of mixing these two, or if they like the Grain free Beyond, transitioning over to that.

I don’t think the urinary formula will be necessary on a regular basis, but they LOVE it so much. Tonight I mixed in Weruva chicken with it, and the both left it, looking at me with a “What is going on here?” expression!

    Any opinions?

When Miss Gaea was diagnosed with struvite crystals I switched to Prescription Diet Urinary (vet. recommended). She has tested negative for the past 7 years, her vet. said we can take her off the food. So now the search for a new food is one and I wanted a hairball formula. We (they) settled on Science Diet low calorie, Hairball/Urinary Health formula. My issue is I have 3 cats and this is the only food they’ve agreed on. My cats are water drinkers so no hassle there.

It would be nice to give them a higher quality food but changing the food every so often to find another one they all like isn’t right. It’s not the most nutritional dry food but they eat it. They don’t like Blue Buffalo, Avoderm or Canidae and I’ll never feed them Meow Mix.

What’s my point? If your cats like and eat the PurinaPro Plan Urinary food then I would stick to it. I’ve discovered it’s healthier for them to eat a less premium food than to not eat the food.

    Good luck

Thank you Pussigato! Not to mention too much experimenting with food can upset their delicate system, and I discovered today! Thankfully, it was a one-time mess.
