    Hey everyone,

Sorry my first post here is one seeking help, but in trying to find a solution I stumbled across this community and I am hoping I can find some help.

I won’t waste your time with the whole back story, but the bottom line is we are having to move out of the house I grew up in due to foreclosure. It’s been a nightmare, but I have a lot of supportive people in my life who will allow me to live with them. The only problem is that all the options cannot take the cats I have, for various reasons. This is sad to me because they are 10 and 11 years old and I’ve had both of them since they were kittens, one was even born in this house! The shelters I’ve called are full, flyers are up at the vets, and nobody is responding to my posts on facebook. I am really trying to avoid craigslist (but maybe someone here can ease my mind about that?), and I cannot think of anywhere else to turn. I have until Jan 15th until I have to be out, and don’t know what I will do if I can’t find a place for them by then.

I am asking you guys if there are other options I am not considering. I am in the metro Atlanta area, and willing to drive them to a good place that could care for them and/or find them a good home in the southeast.

Should I avoid craigslist, or is it worth a shot?

    Thanks for any input.

Well, I’ve only used craigslist for rehoming once. It was when I had to rehome my rabbits. It happened when I came to realize that I was completely incompetent in caring for rabbits, and it was in their best interest to be rehomed. The lady who took them (for free) was a retired vet tech and knew a ton about rabbits, and she gave them a great home. Of course after talking to her about my rabbits, I realized I was even more incompetent with rabbits than I thought initially. I tried to use craigslist a second time to rehome my dog, Joanie, but no one took her from craigslist. It was actually a friend of the family who took Joanie, but then I found out he had abandoned her on the side of the road.

Anyways, I was wondering if maybe you had neighbors who would be interested in adopting the kitties. Or perhaps a family or friend that could watch them until you are back on your feet? One of my cats is actually from the previous house’s owner, She had died and the relatives who sold her house could not take the cat so I adopted her. I would see if a neighbor would take the kitty (a trusted neighbor) before trying craigslist. And I’m sorry you are going through this. It is really hard rehoming adult animals. I know from my experience with Joanie, and she was only 2 years old!

Can you maybe find someone who is willing to foster your kitties for a couple of months? If you offer to continue paying for their vet care and help with their food, maybe someone will take them in until you get back on your feet.

If you are active at a church or other community based activity, you could ask there if someone would take your cats temporary.

I must admit I was pretty mortified to see people were re-homing their cats on Craigslist. To me the risk/reward just isn’t worth it. And no-kill shelters (assuming you aren’t calling the regular shelter) aren’t the panacea that they appear. It’s a tough ethical question, but I’d rather see an older cat leave this earth peacefully than be re-homed where you can’t monitor it’s care.

I can’t offer you any advice becuz I’m pretty much in the same boat you are. I’ll probably be homeless by the end of Feb. & I have 8 cats ranging from age 6-14 yrs. I’m on an emotional rollercoaster not knowing what will happen to them. Like the others…no one seems to want or care about adopting the older kitties. It’s sad. I wish you the best of Luck & I also am very sorry that your going thru the ordeal.
