We adopted a 9 week old male kitter, named Blugill. We’ve had him 2 weeks, was fine, woke up this morning and he was lethargic, and hot. Called vet, got in on a Saturday, praise the lord. Gill had a 104 degree temp so they tested for feline lukemia, I was crying…..praise be it was NEGATIVE…he has an upper respitory infection. They gave him fluids, and sent us home with liquid antibiotics. I was wondering how long before he wants food and water again. He urinated when we came home but still isn’t interest in food, is this normal? Any help or incouraging words would be appreciated, I am glad I had the maternal instinct to get him right to out vet..my husband and I just want to be sure he is ok. THANKS so much.

Give it a day, hopefully when he can breathe again he will eat. Try boiled chicken. Try to force feed him water, like a couple of ml 4 times a day to keep him hydrated.

If they’re stuffy then there are two things you can do to help, you can shut him in the bathroom with the shower running and the steam will help him open up. You can also get some very stinky food and you can heat it up in the microwave to make it even stinkier. Those should help get him eating 🙂

Great advice from Kit and Chaos above. You can also try him on tuna (nice and smelly) or pure chicken or meat baby food (Gerber’s is a good brand), it needs to be pure meat though, no garlic or onion or additives. I’m sure the antibiotics will kick in soon and he will start eating again. If not, ring your vet.

When I found Rocky, he had an upper respiratory infection and could not smell food. Since he couldnt smell it, he didnt want to eat. I had to wrap him in a towel and give him fluids with an eye dropper.

He was about two months old when I found him and he was eating solids i am sure when I found him, but I kept him on liquid for a couple of days until the antibiotics took effect.

Good luck. Sounds like he has found a loving home and a good mommy!

    Cute name by the way!

Upper respiratory infections are not uncommon in cats, but as above, keep kitty hydrated and get regular vet attention if you have any worries at all. That way you know you’ve done all you can.
