hi everyone!! let me start off by saying that i’m very new here so excuse any forum faux pas !! i’ve been frequenting this site as a visitor for a little while and saw how friendly and lovely everyone was and had to join!

    okay, onto business.

on saturday i took home my new baby boy, ernest. he is 8 and a half weeks old, half birman and a really special guy! i’ve never had any kind of cat that wasn’t a moggie before, so if any of this sounds breed-specific please let me know. ernie is sweet, affectionate, funny… all the regular good kitty stuff. BUT!! he cries like crazy! not just little mews either, big trailing cries and gently but long chirrup-like noises. i was in the garden today and heard him crying from the other side of the house, and upstairs!

he meows to let me know if he needs anything of course, and sometimes will even meow for me to play with or stroke him. but i have never heard such a vocal kitty before, and im wondering if im doing anything wrong. he is healthy, active, eats very well, poops look good (well…. as good as a poop can haha!).. but still with the crying!

i don’t think he has separation anxiety and seems to have adjusted extremely well from being away from his birth family (i think especially since his previous home was very very noisy and its calm and quiet here). as soon as he is distracted his wobbly mews quiet down, but im wondering if he might be in pain or something?? i hope im just being an over anxious mama, but i know that kitties usually don’t want to express any suffering too much.

well this is already far too long so forgive me!! and thanks for any help you can give :~)

    Welcome Rosie πŸ™‚

Sounds like you’ve got your hands full πŸ™‚ Birman’s are normally known as an above average intelligent cat & are very affectionate and not generally a noisy cat…

What you could be dealing with is just a noisy boy πŸ™‚ I find male kittens to be a lot more boy active and use their teeth a lot more than girls and I have found the boys while still young to be very needy and loud at times.. This generally calms after being neutered and with age.. But some cats are just very vocal πŸ™‚

I wouldn’t worry πŸ™‚ as long as a cat has a good energy level , a good appetite and normal litter tray habits I wouldn’t worry.. If you ignore the crying ( yes I know how hard that is) it will diminish in frequency but maybe not in volume ..

hi there @button_s !! thanks so much for the reply :~) that’s fantastic to hear hehe, even with the wailing he really is an angel! i just thought to myself “oh gosh… i hope i’m not finding some kind of suffering cute and giggling away at it!” hehe. little fella is going for his first check-up on saturday where i’ll ask about his future neutering. thank you again!!

No bother at all Rosie glad to put your mind at ease πŸ™‚ my Mr Noodle is a howler too he’s about 5 months old now.. And very needy πŸ™‚ he’s a special needs boy … Had his front right leg amputated at 10 weeks old and his right eye only has partial vision .. But it doesn’t stop him from being loud πŸ˜†

My Avatar is Buttons πŸ™‚ he passed away about 4 months ago he was my souls kitty πŸ™‚ and a special needs cat too ..

I have one other indoor cat called Teeny Tiny Nutini πŸ™‚ or Nutini for short and she also had a few issues.. And three outdoor cats all from the same litter … There’s Bob, Dr Jekyll & Miss Hyde πŸ™‚

@button_s :~) !!! such cute names! what are they like? aww what a sweetheart!! funnily enough the reason i got a half-predigree cat is so that i can eventually start to try and foster/adopt kitties with special needs and i wanted a calm kitty to begin with :~) so good of you to take him in and care so much for him!! oh no, sweet buttons. what was he like?? i lost my brother cat five years ago, benji. i knew him since i was four! i’m sure youve experienced this but just remember that eventually the pain will go and all there will be in your heart is peace and love for him. he must have had a lovely life, what a lucky boy. i have one other cat and her name is betty!! she’s a pretty girl with black fur and a tiny white bib! she is a little slow to adjust to ernie but he is just lovely to her!

    Welcome to TDK Rosie Lou!
Is that Ernest, or from your description looks like Betty in your avatar? Very sweet kit all cuddled up with Meowmy! I’m owned by the silver grey tabby in my avatar, Dorian Gray Esq., or as he is known to all, Dorry. He’s 4 yrs old and also gets quite chatty at times, like in the am when I want to catch a few more mins of sleep! Most of us here have sadly suffered losses, I was owned by my tuxie Nicky for 12 yrs. Love my Dorry boy, but still miss him as each furry holds a different place in our hearts. Never replaceable and never forgotten, but thankfully we have lots of room to love our other furries. Anyway, TDK is a fun place to hang out with like minded peeps. You might want to check out the CafΓ© in Chat section or any other area that captures your interest. πŸ˜€

The answer might be to get him a sibling his own age. If you can afford it and there won’t be any housing issues, a like-aged kitten maybe even one of his siblings, might be the perfect solution.

Oh Rosie Buttons was so very special ! Really truely my soulkitty he only reached 3 πŸ™ but yes he had the most amazing life ! Packed full of love and absolutely everything he ever wanted .. It’s not the quantity but the quality it’s what I keep tell myself.. My soul won’t be complete again until I’m back with him … But until then I’ll keep rescuing.. It’s a familiar pain around here..

Noodle is a black panther like Betty but no white on him except for a few stray hairs.. Bob is a Maine Coon Mix brown long haired tabby boy… Dr Dekyll is a silver tabby ( very big boy ) and Miss Hyde is a solid blue cat ( solid dark grey) they are all from the same litter …
It can be hard work a posting the special needs cases and it can limit your fostering capabilities if one special need cat has more needs but it’s well worth it πŸ™‚

hi @katzenjammer !! thanks for the welcome, i’m excited to look around here some more! that’s ernest in my picture! his dad was almost pure black so he got a kind of browny colour to him from his birman mama! he’s chocolate coloured with black points and little white hairs on his legs and paws :~D but looks black in the picture. aww dorry!! what a beautiful boy. i’m sure your nicky was gorgeous too, inside and out! he must have been so happy to have you!

    @cheetahboysmommy

I’d love to give some good advice, but Ruggles is the noisiest cat in the world, and has been for some time.

Every thought that goes through his little head comes out of his mouth in the key of high C.

    (whimper)
And just this morning the dear lad woke me up by blowing second-hand tuna breath in my face.
Do people with cats really live longer?

    Love,
    Emma πŸ˜‰
