Hello from an Iowa Newbie, to your forum that is. I have had cats and kittens all my life, and that a long time. LOL

I usually do all my posting on my chicken forum (BYC), but ran across this one and thought to ask questions.

My farmcat was PG, so I put her in my mudroom over the Easter holiday while I went away so she would be safe from my dogs if she decided to have kittens while I was away.

WHOOOOO boy! did she ever have kittens! I came home late Easter night to find blood, water and very cold, stiff, newborn kittens EVERYWHERE. Momma was just frantic! Poor girl, this is only her 2nd litter. She had cleaned them, but because she had birthed them on top of the Coleman cooler, they had fallen off into some strange places. I started picking up little bodies for disposal. But, what’s this? They move! I dipped each of them in warm water for a few minutes to bring up their body temps, then towel dried them and gave them to momma. I was unable to save the one that I found on the shelf in a mason jar. Momma had been unable to get to it to remove the birth sack. They acted like they just wanted to sleep. I was scared they had waited to long to nurse, and would not know how. After a couple hours, they started to mew and momma began nursing them. I now have 4 little furballs living in my mudroom. 🙂

All that to ask this…Momma has a cough and seems flighty and has red eyes. I gave her some hairball remedy last night, but am concerned what might be wrong. The kittens seem healthy and bright-eyed. I have no money for a vet right now, so need to know what actions I should be taking.

Vets will often work out a payment plan with you. Don’t be afraid to ask!

I notice that the momma is starting to act a little better. I am hoping it was just hairballs. That’s what the vet said when I called him. I am going to keep up the medication.

Welcome to TDK, Arose! That was indeed a surprise from the Easter bunny! I’m so glad that you were able to save most of the kittens. And hopefully momma will pitch up a hairball soon and feel much better.

    Your avatar is adorable!
