How is Dot doing? New noms are always fun! Diabetes is manageable in pets and humans, may she adjust quickly and have many happy cuddly years with those she loves best!

yes, how is Dot? I just found this thread and wanted to add my bit of encouragement. I had a diabetic cat alsmost 20 years ago, when it was much harder to manage diabetes. Biggie learned to pee on command for me. He would jump onto the counter to get his shot then dinner. In those days, there were no diabetic foods for cats and much less was know about management. Despite all that, Biggie made it for almost 7 years after his diagnosis (and he was a mature cat at the time–we figure he must have been in his late teens when he finally passed away.)

One thing I haven’t seen addressed in this thread: the Ketosticks are fine if you don’t have any trouble getting Dot regulated, but if you do, a blood test is much more accurate. The urine sugar level really only tells you where the cat’s sugar was some time ago, The blood sugar level tells you where it is currently. Back when I was trying to get Biggie regulated, the test took so much blood that we couldn’t do it at home. Nowadays, the blood test is accurate with so little blood that it can be done (with an ear stick) at home.

Good luck to you and Dot! I’m sure you will do fine.

Today’s glucometers, both human and veterinary, need the tiniest of blood drops. It is quick and easy to check blood sugar levels with one and as Tripleransom says it provides a reading of exactly what current blood sugar levels are. It has been an invaluable tool in managing my cat’s diabetes.

I like being able to check anytime, day or night, without the time, hassle, stress and expense of running my cat to the vet. And given that stress often raises blood sugar levels, you don’t get as accurate a reading of what is normal for your cat at home when you have to take the cat to the vet for testing.

The up front investment in a veterinary glucometer, testing strips, lancet pen and lancets has more than paid for itself many times over in saving on vet expenses to have my cat tested there and I’m able to check her anytime I suspect her blood sugar level is either too high or too low.

Oh my purrs & headbonks from Dot saying she is feeling better with thanks for all of the concern and helpful info. She seemed even perkier this weekend and enjoys some of her new noms. I still have to feed her the stuff from the Vet but she will eat the new Duck dry kibble and chickie wet per Marnet’s suggestion/thanks! We are to go back to the vet early next week if there aren’t any alarming occurences before than.(Vet wanted her to get her appetite back etc for she was sooo lethargic at ony 4 lbs! down from 7 lbs!) She will get her levels checked & we will learn the ropes to do that at home. So all is progressing positively for my little queenie! Thanks again, we really appreciate your help & concern!

Jeankit, wonderful to hear that Dottie is perking up and doing well. Kudos to you for your efforts and willingness to face the challenge of caring for a diabetic kitty. Yes, it is somewhat expensive and time consuming but sooooo very worth the effort. Sounds like Dottie has been thanking you for making her feel better.

The link to the syringe feeding instructions is great! Best explanation I’ve yet seen. Thank you!

Well, my queen Dot had her Vet visit on Friday & came in with nice & low numbers. I was sent home with some special litter & bought some urine test strips to check at home. We are to go back for a glucose curve check in a couple of weeks to see how she is doing. They advised me not to check her blood at home for her veins etc are so thin. But, she seems perkier and is eating her proper new noms and even reprimanded Crockey when he tried to lick her little head! (He gets smoochie & she won’t have any of that nonsense!) So, purrs & headbonks from her to you for your on going care & concern/thanks again…purrrrr!

Yup, woo hoo, thanks Marnet! Although Dot had to put up w/the guy vet w/the “big fingers” she was happy w/results. I will be contacting the “nice lady vet”/per Dot for little queenie too about progress & maybe starting an occasional acupuncture routine when $$ & time permits. So thanks again. (She has a slight heart murmur and got some drops for her runny eye but that is all cleared up too!) So hopefully she is on the road back to a more comfortable healthy spot at her 15 years young…thanks w/purrs!
