Hi! Noticed recently that Goo has dandruff. He is all black so it is easy to see. It does not seem to bother him. He is not scratching. Isi t a common problem and is it something that resolves on it’s own? I just think it is weird this is the first time I have seen it- he is about one and a half and I’ve had him since about 4 months old.

I was putting off taking them (and even questioning if I needed to) for their vaccinations because they are indoor only and money is tight, but now I guess I will and I’ll ask about his dandruff too. He is usually so glossy and handsome and I want to help him maintain his dashing good looks. 🙂

When I’ve had that happen the vet said they weren’t getting enough fat in their diet and asked what I was feeding. When I said dry he recommended adding in wet and it cleared right up for mine.

Hmm..he gets mostly wet food with a dry snack, and drinks lots of water. They eat the high protein low carb stuff. Butwho knows- maybe he does need more fat. Thanks Kit.

Pucca, a dab of NutriMalt (cheap, get a Petco) may help. It is a yummy vitamin and fat supplement that comes in a tube. My cats all have loved it–it’s smelly stuff–they’ll eat it from the tube and cry for more. Otherwise, it has a lot to do with the amount of humidity in the air. Even if you live in a high-humidity area, but often have the a/c or heat on, your home will be dry inside. Misty has it bad…I just keep her “furminated.” She loves that, too.

Thanks for asking, Pucca. This is something I need to look into as well.

Best way to keep Rotley dandruff-free is leave the top off the butter dish. (Need I say more?)

    LOL @ Emma

I also noticed some dandruff around Miss Roxy’s back end black stripe this weekend. While she eats dry food, she’s not lacking in the “fat” department :p I’m going to try some NutriMalt stuff this weekend though and see how it goes

A friend of mine used to give his Persian fish oil for her coat.

Emma, I suspect your boys get all the fat they need from the smoked salmon you leave lying around.

“Smoked salmon!! Willow’s nose twitches and she slinks to the wormhole to nab some. “Mean old Mommy is cutting back my food AGAIN! I’m going to STARVE!””

Oh thanks guys! I will get a fatty treat and try that, also the Nutri Malt. I only have weird soy butter so I don’t think Emma’s trick will work here! 🙂 I brush him when I remember too, but he mostly twists around to chew on the brush and doesn’t really stay still!

I made another post about Magoo suddenly having big time static- I did some research and it is common in cold dry weather. It has to be connected to the dandruff thing too because it is happening at the same time! I swear, if I pet this guy in the dark you would see sparks!

Pucca, whose pretty paw is that?

Pucca – I actually did see sparks once when I petted Truffles in the dark! It was after that I picked up an anti-static brush. That helped me be able to brush her without shocking us both. The brush was made for people not pets but it worked fine for medium and short hair cats.

Purrki also has a dandruff issue and the vet said it can also be that due to her weight, she can’t reach to do all her own grooming. Although the dandruff has gotten much better as I have had her – I think some was nerves from the move.

Hi Lisaeylau- that paw was a photo from the ittybittykittycommittee website. It’s even cuter close up. The dandruff seems to have improved. Been brushing him more. Have not had a chance to get fatty treats the tube suppliment yet, but he occasionally gets some tuna juice and very occasionally some turkey.
