I have read many positive comments on this product from this site and was wondering when does this product start working on killing the fleas? I have been using it for a week now and no sign of fleas dying? Anyone know how long it takes before it starts to work? The bag says 72 hours and I’m way past 72 hours and I haven’t had any luck on killing these fleas… Thanks for reading…

Moose – I haven’t used it, but many others (as you have already learned) have, but there are two different grades of DE and one is better than the other for fleas. I tagged your thread, and from what little I know about tagging a thread, it should help lead you to some of the other threads concerning DE.

Good luck, and welcome to TDK!

Or not – as I just learned, since it didn’t lead me to anything but this thread. But someone who knows more than me should notice soon and hopefully help you. Sorry.

I just changed the tag on this to “fleas”.

Okay, so I am a slow learner! If you look to the left of the threads you will see, as you scroll down, all the words that are subjects of some of the threads – click on the word “fleas” and that will lead you to a lot of different threads about fleas and controlling/killing them. Hope that helps.

Some important things to know, when using diatomaceous earth:

    1. Food Grade ONLY. The kind of DE used for swimming pool filters will not work; it does not have the mechanical action needed to eliminate fleas.

    2. The pets and living area must be treated THOROUGHLY. The whole house should look like it’s been dusted in flour (including all upholstered furnishings, carpeting, etc.). The pets may need to be coated every 3-5 days, for the duration. It will look VERY messy and your pet’s coats will not feel sleek or glossy – but only temporarily!

    3. Length of treatment = 2 weeks. Must be this long to fully break the flea life cycle (including eggs, larvae, and adults).

I’ve had positive results with it too, but a lengthy process, need a bit of patience.

Thank you guys so much for taking time out to write me! I have treated them thus far for a week? It is food grade that you put in their food every day and on their coats. One of my cats started throwing up since yesterday so I wasn’t sure if she was reacting to the D.E. so I didn’t dive it to them today? The powder gets EVERYWHERE from their coats….. I have treated my house… So it takes longer than 72 hours to start seeing the fleas die?? Anyone who uses this product I would love some feed back and anyone who has any other methods on how they killed fleas… I have NEVER had this problem, but this year has been awful.. Thank you guys so very much:)

I’ve seen big results within 3 or 4 days of beginning treatment, especially with really bad infestations, but you MUST stick with the two weeks to really see good results.

And when I say to be generous with the environmental treatment, I mean it should really look like a flour bomb exploded in your house or apartment – especially if you have carpeting or upholstered furniture! If you sleep on a mattress or futon, you’ll need to treat it before putting a cover or sheet on. Anywhere the pet habitually sleeps should either be coated thickly or the bedding should be put through the wash on hot (and dried on high). Everything should feel a bit dusty or higher-friction than previously.

You can vacuum, sweep, whatever in a couple of weeks. But in the meantime, your pet should get a bit more DE every couple of days (including the belly, sides, under the jaw, tail, armpits, etc.).

It’s not an instantaneous way to kill fleas, larvae, or their eggs. But it’s very effective, non-toxic, and impossible for fleas to develop resistance to.

Oh, and rub it into your pet’s fur. If it stays on the top surface of the fur, it won’t do much good. Coat your hand with DE and pet your cat firmly, or ruffle it into the fur. Give your kitty a massage with DE all over your hands; that will work it down to the skin.

I once caught a flea and put it in a jar with some DE in it. It was dead within half an hour. Once it was completely covered in the DE it couldnt really move at all, so I’m convinced that you need a high level of exposure to the DE in order to kill them. Works like a charm though. I did my whole house a few months ago, and I havent seen a bug of any shape or form since then in my house.

I used it & it worked great!! I have 8 kits inside so I needed something that would work & wasn’t toxic. I only dusted the carpets & lightly dusted the cats. I also left it in the carpets for a good week & a half. I hated not being able to vacuum but, it was crucial that it be left on long enuf to do it’s stuff.

I did have 1 minor reaction w/one kit. I’m sure that there is a percentage/ratio that has to be considered w/any product you use like that. My Winnie ended up w/a slight congestion problem. I vacuumed out the room she’s in the most & kept her away from the rest of the dusting. She’s fine now & as flea-free as the rest of them.

I never fed it to them b cuz I’ve never been sure of what amt. I should give them.

The DE also works great outside to keep the ants away from the food dishes. The ants can be quite fearless in summertime here. Now they stay away & the outside kits can eat in peace.

I registered simply to bump this thread, and say this is the best info I have found on the internet about duration and application. I have a 50 pound bag of food grade. Its been 3 days and it seems to have gotten worse, I was ready to call the best exterminator in san diego. But I have not applied enough to the cats nor to the environment. I will continue. One thing that I do not see here is that the cats should be removed from environment while applying to carpets and such… breathing a lot of this stuff could cause silicosis and that is deadly.

    Thanks
