I have a kitten who is only 9 days old and is very bloated and constipated. He and his siblings are all nursing from mom, but shes only 8-12 months old herself and even though shes being an awesome mom, shes just not able to help him all by herself. I’ve tried stimulating and rubbing with a warm damp cloth, but he’s still full, even though I’ve managed to get a few thick hard chunks out (sorry, I don’t want to sound gross). He’s just so tiny and precious, and it’s breaking my heart watching him go through this! I know he’s got to be hurting, every time I do the “rubbing” he just screams and cries. I ended up taking him to the vet last night and one of the tech’s looked him over briefly and she said he’s doing okay, he just really needs to poop. She also said that I probably didn’t need to see the vet personally because she’d probably just say the same thing and by having just the tech check him out I didn’t have to pay that lovely emergency fee. But at this point I just want to do what’s best for the little guy. They told me there’s not much they can do for him besides simulation at his age, but I wanted to check and see if maybe anyone out there has had personal experience with stuff like this. Theres gotta be SOMETHING more I can do! Any advice? PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi KathySueJ and welcome to TDK, the fluffiest place on the Internet! Sorry to hear about Little One…I’m not an expert when it comes to kittens but I have included a couple of pink tags in the upper right corner of your screen “poop” and “triangle method”. Please scroll through and see if one of those threads might help you. Hopefully Jcat, Skyron or one of the others who are more familiar with baby kittens will be along soon to offer more advice. Good luck!

Thank you so much. I’ve never been on one of these chat forums before, I’m shocked actually, cause I didn’t really know if I’d get any replies. It’s nice to know there’s people out there who care and are willing to help. I’ll try to check out those threads u mentioned. I’m hoping to figure something or quick, cause I really don’t know how much more the little guy can hold, he’s still nursing and the vet tech said that’s a good sign. With how quickly I see people respond, I’m glad I decided to take a chance and to do this post. Thanks again! P.S. Do u know if theres a way I can put his picture on here? It might help some to see him.

I’m not a vet, but i would get a second opinion maybe if i was in your shoes. I’ve read about kittens as young as yours getting enemas (from a vet) here on tdk. I would also wonder about some liquid parrafin on a q-tip to help ‘lubricate’ his anal area. But i would not have the confidence to do that on my own with such a young kitten, i would definitely get a vet to do it.

I have found also giving constipated kitties some extra water with a syringe after every feed helps; a lot of tdk’ers also recommend a drop of vegetable oil in their milk every day – thats for bottle babies though, but i’m sure it wont harm him to get a drop or two directly in the mouth. Good luck!

thanks. I’ll try that. and I kinda got a second opinion I had talked on the phone with the vet that delivered them, they were delivered via caesarean, and the one closest to my house, which is where I took him last night. But if I can’t get him going soon, I might just take him into the one that delivered them. It’s hard cause I’ve already had to pay so much for these guys and their mommy, $1500 just for the cesarean, and this ones little sister had trouble eating and was losing weight pretty quickly so there was another visit. It seems everything keeps happening in the middle of the night which requires the emergency pet hospitals. But regardless, I’ll do what I have to do for as long as I can, but I do have 3 kids of my own too. I’ve never been through stuff like this before, it’s definately quite the experience. I was practically mommy kitties birthing coach, since shes pretty young herself she didn’t know what to do and wouldn’t let me leave her side. I even had to clear the faces and cut the cords of the 2 she had at home, but then the 3rd one got stuck so I had to take them in. anyway, I’ve been through a lot with these guys and love each and every one of them, I just hope I can get this one some help. Thank you all!

Welcome KathySue! It’s kinda slow here on the weekends but Skyron there has tons of experience with kittens. I’ve also heard of tiny kittens getting enemas at the vet,it sounds like that tech was a bit uninformed. It seems like that kitten needs more than stimulation at this point. Hopefully that vet who delivered them can help. I’m sorry you’re having so many problems and it does seem like everything bad happens at night or on a weekend. I’ll keep you in my thoughts.

Thanks so much for taking such good care of these babies, please come back often, there will be more replies and let us know how you do.

I can’t add much to what Skyron has said, I think you need a vet or vet tech who will actually do something. There is a video on stimulating babies, I’ll try find the link for you.

Thank you all SO MUCH! I really appreciate all your care and concern and advice. I actually took your advice and went back to the vet. Apparently the lady who helped me last night was in the wrong and the others in the clinic were not happy about it. I had told her that I was also concerned about his urination but she insisted that wasn’t of any concern, and that he just really needed to poop. Well, yes he was constipated, but I was right in my worries and he had a very large bladder too. They tried to do a catheter many times but he was just too small. They also did an ultrasound and that’s how they knew it was his bladder. I guess the constipation was just a secondary problem. Anyway, they told me the only thing they could do would be surgery and even then it would take a special surgeon. I had them contact one and he said he wouldn’t recommend it in a kitten so young, that the chances of him surviving the anesthesia would be slim. Apparently he either had something wrong with his penis, or there was something blocking his urinary tract. They recommended putting him down 🙁 I couldn’t do it right then because I had my 4 year old daughter with me and I don’t think either one of us could handle it. So I went home and called another vet and my sister actually came and took him for yet another opinion and that vet did the same things with no success and recommended the same measures because my poor little baby was in so much pain and suffering. We ended up doing the humaine (if you call it that) thing and putting him down, cause even if he made it thru surgery ok, he’d have to undergo many more in a short time. This was so hard! I’ve been crying my eyes out all day. You know, it’s amazing how attached and how in love you can be with such a precious baby you’ve only known 9 short days. I really hope and pray that I don’t ever have to go thru something like this again! Once again, thank you all so much! I’m sure I’ll talk with you all again soon! We still have 4 more babies that appear to be doing just fine so I’ll keep you all posted on them and maybe I’ll try to post pics ??? Not sure how to though. Thanks again!

Oh, KS I am so, so sorry that it turned out like this. But you did the right thing, giving that poor little one the chance to slip out of this world peacefully and without any further suffering. We have all been there. {{{KS}}} It hurts so much, and especially with the babies, it doesn’t matter how long you have had them, as another TDKer says, they leave huge paw prints on your heart.

We look forward to hearing about your four other babies and seeing their pix and we wish them all happy, healthy lives. The easiest way to post pix is to start a Catster page for them — if you click on my avatar, Libs, you’ll see my page for her — but you can also post pix via flickr and photobucket etc.

Once again, I’m so sorry for your loss of your little one. You did everything you could.

Welcome to the Daily Kitten, KathySue. What a rollercoaster ride with these tiny kittens! It sounds like you did everything you could to save the little guy. He did know love, warmth and safety in his short life. We like to think of our cats who pass away as having crossed a bridge into a better place where they wait to be reunited with us. Here is a poem that describes this concept:

I’m sorry you lost one of the babies. It is a really hard thing but you did the right thing by helping him to move on. Mama kitties usually know when a kitten is born with a defect and they often just abdomen that one and let him die alone. Fortunately, he had you to help him so he didn’t have to linger and suffer.

Mama kitty is very young herself. Did the vet spay her when he delivered the kittens? If not, be sure to get that done as soon as possible so she doesn’t have more kittens and you don’t have to go through the pain of losing one of them again.

    I am so sorry KathySue,it really sounds like you did everything possible to save him but it was just not meant to be. We all know here how quickly we can get attached to them and it surely hurts to lose one. {{{{Hugs}}}}

Yes when you can please come back and post pictures of the sweet healthy babies and chat with us. It sounds corny but we really do care here and this is the nicest place on the internet.

Yes, KathySue, you did the absolute best thing for this little life. I know, we all know, how difficult it is to give them this incredible gift of love, but that is exactly what it is. He knew love and kindness and he will watch over you and your daughter, I’m sure of it! I hope you stay with TDK so we can 1) help you through this and 2) get to know you and your family – human and furry!

Bless you for trying and bless you for giving him this final gift of love.

Thanks again to all of u! It’s nice to find people who really care and understand. And to answer your question about mommy kitty, yes, they did fix her. She actually had a lesion on the inside of the uteran wall so they had to remove her uterus. The night she was in labor was an experience I’ll never forget and a bit of a story that I will share with you all another time. I’m so glad I stumbled across this site and decided to post. I’ll definitely post more later. Thanks again you guys are great!

That’s good. You may want to have them remove her ovaries too to greatly reduce the risk of breast cancer and eliminate the risk of other problems with her ovaries in the future. Plus with her ovaries intact she’ll still go into heat every few weeks once the kittens are weaned. This is not only annoying but a cat in heat will attract stray toms trying to mate with her.

Oh sweetie, I am so, so, sorry! You are a star to have taken him in for care early on, and to go again when it did not feel right to you the first time. Your loving, swift action spared the baby more pain and suffering, and you did the right thing. It hurts, but you made his life as good as was possible, and he is not hurting anymore.

You know, I’m not sure if they removed her ovaries our not, I’ll have to call and ask. And this was actually the 2nd kitten that had problems, there were 6 altogether but a few days after they were born I had noticed that this ones little sister want gaining weight (I was weighing them daily) and I also could tell she was significately smaller than the others. I started really watching her eat. And even though I know she was nursing, she either want getting enough or want getting any. So after talking to the vet, I started trying to bottle feed and she wouldn’t suck on the nipple. It tired and tried to get her to but it want working, and I made sure that in between me trying different techniques that she got alone time with mom, I even held her on the nipple myself many times, and had to even fed her with a tiny medicine dropper. Anyway, after about 1 1/2 days of this she was still losing weight, in fact the last day we had her I literally watched her drop over 10 grams in half a day. So I immediately took her in. the vet told us we could try tube feeding her but I was scared I might do something wrong, sticking a tube down a newborn kittens throat to it’s stomach was just too much for me. I couldn’t live with myself if I’d accidentally got a lung or something, and if something went wrong I would’ve blamed myself. So one of the vet technicians that had assisted in their delivery offered to take her on and care for her. She stayed in the clinic for 3 days and then the tech took her home and shes doing great now. However, it was just 2 days later that her brother, the one I started this thread about, started having problems. It’s literally been one thing after the other with these guys. In fact, it all started like that when momma kitty went into labor. First of all, she wouldn’t let me leave her side the last days of her pregnancy and during labor. As I mentioned before, shes pretty young herself. So when she had the 1st one she actually got scared and started swinging it around while it was still attached (if u know what I mean) she ended up treating the cord by doing this and she didn’t go to clean him or even break the sac, so I had to do it. Luckily my sister had come over to assist me cause I’ve never been thru any of this and I was pretty nervous myself. So we got him cleaned up and cut the cord and then mom started doing a little cleaning herself. By the time they were settled she started contracting again and along comes baby kitty #2. Momma didn’t do anything with this one either and when I broke the sac and cleared his mouth, he wasn’t breathing. I had to rub him a bit and get him breathing and then mommy started learning and wanted to take over. By the time they were settled, the 3rd started coming but only the bag was coming out. She pushed for over 2 hours and she was bleeding a lot. I had been talking with the very of and on during all this and they said it was time to bring her in. the vet and I were positive the 3rd kitty was dead. By this time it had been 3hrs of pushing on that one kitten and no progress. Since it was a little after 5am and her labor had slowed, they told me that I could leave her there and they wouldn’t charge room and board if I wanted to wait for a day clinic to open (since a c-section runs about $1500 at their clinic, and between $400-$600 at the other clinic) so I went ahead and did that and when I got home I just couldn’t rest, something was telling me to go ahead and just have it done, I couldn’t stand the idea of her sitting there like that any longer. So I called up the very and have them the go ahead. When they called me a couple hours later to let me know how it went we were all shocked. The kitty that was stick was still born, but they managed to revive her (shes the only one that los like her mom) and had we waited til the other clinic opened, she wouldn’t have made it! Plus, it turned out that mommy kitty, my Sophie, had a cut on the inside of her uterus and was bleeding inside, so there was a good chance she wouldn’t have made it either. There was definitely some higher power telling me to hurry up and get it done that night/morning. So there’s my story, and you guys know what’s happened since. It’s been a very long 12 days with lots of heartache but things seem to be looking up. The kittens are starting to open their eyes, a couple of them fully, and the remaining for plus mommy are doing great! 2 of them, the 2 that were born at home, were born on my son’s 11th birthday. He told me that his birthday wish. I have 3 kids, I know I mentioned my 4 year old daughter who was with me at the vet the other day, that’s Kaitlyn (aka sweet pea), then there’s my 8yr old, Jacob, and my now 11yr old, Jason. Thanks again to all of you, you’re the best!

If anyone wants to see the little ones I’ve taken Jcat’s advice and opened a catster page for both my cats, sophie (momma kitty) and or 3 1/2 year old Tiger. On sophie’s page I put pix of her babies too. There are some of all the kittens, including the one we have to the vet and the one who had to be put down.
