I have a 4 week old kitten that was found in a trash can and brought to animal control. Upon intake she was seen by a vet given pylantel and an fvrcp vaccine. She was also observed to have neurological issues, tremors, circling, head bob. She weighed in at 10oz. I have started her on lapping up a slurry of powdered kmr, water, and kitten pate and I supplemented with a bottle. When she arrived she had dried yellow diarrhea on her tail and legs and I remove several fleas. After 2 days she began feeling good, playing exploring, her neurological issues are still there but have gotten better. She uses the litter box to pee when I place her there after meals. She hasn’t pooped in just over three days. This morning I switched her to pre mixed liquid kmr and began watering down her slurry. I also added a few drops of olive oil. She now seems like she’s straining a bit in the litter box (still peeing fine.) I’m wondering if I should try some pumpkin or if that may make her worse. She will see her vet on Tuesday and they don’t seem to think I should rush her in since she’s playing, eating and behaving normally. How long does it take usually for the extra water and olive oil to help? Should I try Pumpkin? I have read so many things online (mineral oil, children’s suppository shaved down, enemas etc.) but i don’t want to overwhelm her or give her something I shouldn’t especially since she was in such rough shape just a few days ago. Thanks!

Why don’t you try stimulating her to go yourself (I will post a link for you on the ‘triangle method’) to get her started. If she is constipated with hard stool, it may take a couple of days for the oils to work along with the watered down KMR. You can also give her goat’s milk which is a miracle worker for constipated kittens. It does not cause diarrhea either. You can get it in the cold milk section of the grocery, or in the baking aisle in cans as condensed or powdered. It’s full of probiotics for her gut and immune system. I don’t think I would do an enema myself or use a suppository. If you can’t get her to poop using the above methods, wait until Tuesday when you see the vet and let them do the initial enema. Then she should be good to go.

I didn’t mention that I have used the triangle method a few times to stimulate her with and without a warm tap. I tried again today and got a tiny piece abut the size of a corn kernel. It had the consistency of clay. She was definitely pushing her little heart out. I will stick with the olive oil and watered down formula/gruel and hope for the best.

KMR concentrate tends to give kits constipation and the liquid does the opposite. In TDKland, we recommend Goats’ milk for kittens. Cats are lactose intolerant and can’t digest cows milk. Goats’ milk is full of nutrients, probiotics and gentler on their tummies. This can also regulate the poop. You can find it in the dairy section or the concentrate in the baking aisle. Mix the concentrate 1:1 with water or pedylite.

The additional liquids should kick in soon. She may be backed up enough to make it difficult to have a bowel movement and may need an enema administered by the vet.

I believe your kit has cerebellar hypoplasia (CH). It’s not a behavioral issue nor a death sentence rather it’s neurological. If it’s determined your girl has CH, I will ask one of our most experienced TDKer to answer questions and help you live a wonderful life. She has a boy with CH and he’s is spunky and loving as any cat.

I hate to say this but who ever noticed her condition decided to throw her in trash rather than deal with her.

Thanks so much for giving her chance. Keep in touch

I am hoping it is CH rather than something painful or degenerative. Our adult cat has a mild case and she is a happy, healthy, clumsy girl. I will give the water and olive oil a bit more time and pick up a little goats milk tomorrow. If I don’t get any results tomorrow do you recommend moving up the vet appointment? Or is it safe to wait until Tuesday? Thanks!

She has a good meowmy in you! I would move the appointment up. Being constipated is uncomfortable and she doesn’t understand why she straining so much.

We have poop! She I’m so glad I get to have a poop party here with you! Of course she went literally 5 minutes after we called the vet to change her appointment haha. In case anyone was following here’s what I did.

First 48 hours- she was eating a slurry of canned kitten food and powdered KMR with supplementary bottle feeds.

Day 3- Continued with slurry and added olive oil and 2x water. Stimulated under warm tap with no results.

Day 4- Switched to liquid KMR and water in the pate slurry and continued with olive oil. In the evening we made a liquid KMR, water, and pumpkin puree for her supplementary meals with a dropper. Stimulated with soft cloth got a hard, corm kernel sized poop with clay consistency.

Day 5- Stimulated after breakfast (same meal as above) with soft cloth got a little watery brown liquid, placed her in box immediately after stimulation and she went on her own with a bit of a struggle.

She’s bouncing all over the place and loving it despite her neurological issues. She’s gained 2.5oz in the last 4 days and she’s still eating like a champ!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF THE INFO ON THIS POST AND ALL THE OTHERS! This site was life saver! I know waaay too much about kitten poop thanks to you guys haha!

That’s awesome news! I know the feeling of worry and concern and the feeding, and the oil and the stimulating and just at the last minute…..POOP!!

So glad she’s feeling better and even if she is a CH kitten, she is still a wonderful kitten!!
