I have not been here in ages! I am mom to 2 boys Magoo and Amos. Hope everyone is well. I need some help. My guys are now 5 and I had noticed Magoo in particular was getting thin. My cat sitter friend noticed it and advised me to feed them more and that they seemed hungry. I had been cutting back on their dry food snack as Amos I thought had been looking chunky. For reference, I had been feeding them:

each cat 1/4 of a 5.5 oz can in the a.m. and p.m. (so each was getting half a 5.5. oz can per day) AND a small handful of crunchies in the afternoon.

They had always maintained about 10 pounds each give or take, but when I weighed Amos her was 9.8 and Magoo was down to 8.8 ๐Ÿ™ I feel awful, like I have been starving them! Magoo def. needs to bulk up.

So today I began giving each cat 1/2 can of food twice per day, and I will give a small amount of crunchy still because they love that as a treat. My concern is that in each bowl 1/2 can looks like a HUGE amount for little tummies, and I am wondering if this is too much food to feed at a time, or is it ok and often done?

I do not want them to get sick off eating too much at once, so any reassurance that eating 1/2 can each am and then again pm is ok/normal would soothe me.

Also, I do not want the opposite prob to happen and they get overweight, so I hope a little crunchy is still ok. They will be miserable w/o this treat, esp. Magoo, it is his crack.

Also, could I have damaged them by not feeding them enough this whole time? It always seemed enough until recently. I feel guilty. I plan on weighing them weekly now until the situation is stable.

Hi Pucca – nice to see you! Have you had them vet checked? If their thyroid levels are off it could cause weight loss. I don’t think you have done any damage. Weekly weight checks is a good idea.

    Hi Joan!

    Long time no see! ๐Ÿ™‚

I decided I will take Magoo in if he does not get up to fighting weight soon. He is acting fine though. Amos just lost a little weight so not as worried about him. Plus he was at the vet last year. Goo is my concern at the moment but he is running around like a nut as usual so hope ok. How are your kitties, Joan?

They’re good Pucca, thanks for asking! Leela is 6 and Comet just turned 4. Took them to the vet today for annual exam and rabies vaccination. Both got a clean bill of health.
Good thinking taking Mr. Magoo in if the plan does not result in some weight gain. Probably what’s good for one will work for both if you need it, without doubling the vet cost.

Bumping to get advice if 1/2 of food per cat at a time is too much or not. Deciding whether to break their daily food into 2 meals (easier) or 3.

Hey Pucca ๐Ÿ™‚ long time no see …

1/2 can per meal is fine ๐Ÿ™‚ cats will eat more wet food in a sitting than they would dry food.. I give my gang 1/2 can each in morning and evening .. Unfortunately Bob developed an allergy to wet food so he is on dry only now ๐Ÿ™ but I’m watching him like a hawk.. And Nutini get at least three meals a day of the fancy mini tin-tray cereal free wet food .. Gosh it’s hard work feeding them all different foods ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Buttons!

I remember you! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for your guidance- I will stick to this plan then- I can still give them a small amount of dry mid-day then, I guess. Just need to figure out amount of that so they do not get too heavy. ๐Ÿ™‚ Sorry about Bob. As long as he is eating something and enjoying it, I am sure he will be fine. Yes, I remember from my multi-kitten fostering days the challenges of finding something everyone could eat!

    Hi Pucca…

I feed my little cat (about 8 lbs) 3 * 2.8oz cans of wet food per day – so about 8 – 9 oz of food per day total. If anything, I’d be feeding your boys more ๐Ÿ™‚

Good morning everyone! ….. I feed my two girls 1/2 of a small can of wet food 3 x per day ….. Cuddles (18) also gets supplemental crunchies inbetween ….. Abby (Siamese 10) has gone from a plump 13 lbs. to a svelte 11 ……. the vet is please ….. Cuddles, who was a butterball in her hay, lost a lot of weight a couple of years ago and went down to 7 lbs ….. after numerous testing, it turned out to be her thyroid, which we treat now on a daily basis, and she’s back up to 8.4 the vet was pleased with this also ……

Thanks for all the responses! Amos already gained 4 ounces. Magoo, only 1 ounce, but both are happy with the additional food. I will keep weighing and update. I’d like Magoo to gain as much as his brother! ๐Ÿ™‚
