The Musical Youth version was watered down because having children singing about smoking weed – or anything – probably wouldn’t pass censorship.
A Dutchie is a small iron cast oven used in many parts of Africa and the African diaspora; it is a potjekos or potje (little cookinng pot) in South Africa. Actually the “bowdlerized” song is biting in its own way with its refrain “how does it feel when you’ve got no food”, a reference to extreme poverty.

Cannabis is set to become legal in Canada by a year from now; I’ve reached the point where I’m more interested in its medicinal uses (for arthritis); this is already legal here though there are still some issues about supply. Legislators, legal experts, police forces and health care workers have to grapple with some of the obvious problems to be solved, such as how can it be proven that someone is over the legal limit for driving or operating machinery.
I’m pleased about the plan, though, as I know too many people who have a record for smoking or carrying weed when they were very young, in the hippie era. It isn’t a matter of wanting people to be stoned. I’m against alcohol prohibition as well, and it certainly isn’t a matter of wanting them to be drunk. Addiction is a very serious problem (now the most lethal drugs are synthetic opiods), but I think it is better addressed as a health issue, and getting stuff out of the hands of organised crime.
