Hi everyone, I am new to this site. I currently have a one year old dog who is huge but is a big ball of sweetness. I also just recently survived the Tuscaloosa Tornado and about 3 weeks afterwards my roommate and I rescued three kittens who also survived. They were in very bad shape but now they are doing great! We were only going to foster them, but my dog fell in love with one of the kittens and they are both the same color so I couldn’t resist :). Loo (TuscaLOOsa), my kitten, is now about 4 months old, and I recently moved in with my boyfriend (who is a dog person but has never had a kitten so he doesn’t know how fun it is yet). I knew it was going to be rough at first because he has always had his brother and sister. He is doing so well except at night. The second we go to sleep he meows nonstop and it is impossible to fall asleep even with earplugs. At my other place he did not do this, I’m guessing because he had his siblings. Unfortunately, my boyfriend is losing his patience and I am desparate. I’m having to sleep on the couch with Loo instead of in my bed. Any suggestions???

Welcome to TDK LM (we abbreviate here at lot!) and thank you for rescuing those babies and congrats on Loo adopting you!

A few ideas: get Loo a little stuffed toy or two for him to snuggle with; you are right, he probably misses his siblings. This is a new place and probably scary, so you might also want to give him something you have worn to snuggle with also. And finally, PLAY, PLAY, PLAY before beditme to tire him out! Do you have a laser pointer? Those are great for chasing and tiring 🙂 I’m sure others will pop in with more ideas, too!

Poor baby. It does sound like Loo misses his siblings. I hope JJBM’s suggestion will work for you ,if you choose to try them. They’re all good ideas. Oh….Welcome to TDK!!!

Play with Loo a LOT right before bedtime. Put his bed right beside your bed and put one of your shirts (or something you’ve worn and not washed) in the bed. That might help him sleep through the night.

Welcome to TDK, Loo! These calming collars have worked well for many. You can find them at pet stores. Entirely Pets seems to be the best price for many pet-related items.

A water bottle with warm water and a tshirt or towel wrapped around it so the kitty doesn’t get too warm might help with giving the kitten something to lie next too. Or a stuffed animal, where does the big dog sleep? Are they friendly enough to sleep together. Plus all the ideas above.

Giving the kitten a big meal right before your bedtime helps encourage sleep too. I adjusted my three young cats’ meal time with this in mind and they are great night time sleepers.

Ok so last night I played with Loo until I dropped dead to tire him out. And yes, my dog absolutely loves this kitten and they sleep together all the time. I also gave him a big wet food meal and one of my t-shirts like you guys said. He actually did really great all night but this morning he started up again … Probably just a kitten thing for now. It was definately a positive step! Thank you all for the tips!

Glad to hear progress is being made. This is something almost all kitten owners deal with at some point, so you’re definitely not alone 🙂
