I just love looking at his sweet little face in your avatar. For some reason he reminds me of my grandson (red hair, pixie looking and a definite air of mischief and attitude about him).

LOL! I really wanted to name him after the main character in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books. “James Alexander Malcolm McKenzie Frazier… aka Jamie” That character has red hair and is a highlander. He has a small grandson who looks and acts like him and they call him “Jemmie”. So, sometimes as a nickname I call him Jemmie. Anybody who has read these books will understand why I want want to call my little warrior kitten that! But, he really is my miracle kitten, so his main name will be Lazarus. He is such an awesome kitten, and George is such a great big brother!

Hi Everyone! Since Lazarus is drinking formula mixed with soft food from his saucer, is it okay for me to leave it out all night in case he gets hungry? I have been leaving some Kitten Chow mixed with water and he hasn’t been eating it.

How is little Lazarus doing? He must be getting pretty big. I just love his Catster picture. Makes me smile everytime I see it.

Hi everyone! Lazarus is doing great! He no longer uses his bottle. He drinks his formula that is mixed with the Royal Canin soft food. He is very playful, and gets into everything! He loves to climb into shoes, and Pepsi boxes! George is still a great big brother to him. He weighs 1 lb. 4 oz. now! Thanks again to everyone who has helped us! This site is awesome.

I see you have some more Catster pictures posted. Lazarus has got to be one of the cutest little kittens in the world. If you haven’t already submitted his picture to Kittenmaster, please do it. The only reason I can think of what Lazarus wouldn’t be The Daily Kitten is if Kittenmaster has as much trouble as I do picking the cutest picture.

P.S. If you start a new thread next time you post more pictures of the cutie on Catster, then no one will miss a single precious view of him.

That’s great!!! Lazaraus is such a cutie, I love when the fur kind of poofs up since he’s still young. I’m proud he’s not using the bottle. I can understand how hard it is to get a kitten of the bottle.

I am having the exact issue with my little guy. I’m new here and am so glad to have joined. I’ve been upset because I want this little guy to thrive. I think he’s about 2 week’s. .. feeding isn’t as smooth as I have had in the past.

I have had this same issue with 2 of the many of the little kittens I have hand reared. Funny thing is, they were both males! But I will have to say I don’t think it’s the same thing as kneading. It is a frantic grasping trying to get to the bottle and nipple. Make sure that the end of the nipple has a cross-cut in it to let the milk out when he sucks. You can GENTLY squeeze the bottle a bit at first when you put it in his mouth so he can taste the milk. BUT BE CAREFUL that not too much comes out and it goes into his lungs which can cause him to choke and then develop pneumonia. Make sure the kitten is upright or even on all four feet, don’t try and lay him on his back to feed. Sometimes “scruffing” him might work since kittens seem to relax when doing this because their moms carry them like that. Once you get him to relax a bit and the milk is flowing, he should settle down. My kittens only did this at the beginning of the feeding.

Oh LisaCat65, Lazarus is just so cute!!! I have a oranger bottle baby too called Ozzie, he sure is a character! He just turned 3 🙂 Thank you so much for this post, it has helped me a lot (and thanks to all who commented too!) i am currently raising a little girl kitty who i think is around 18days old. I have had her for a week. She was rescued from a wall by firefighters. She too is scratching on the bottle. She has given me a few frights and 3 trips to the vet for fluids ( i now can do them myself) she still has an eye infection even after a week of antibiotics. I will post my own post up shortly as i am a newby 🙂

Welcome Kirra! When kittens scratch at the bottle frantically, I have found it means they are not getting food fast enough. I don’t know how old your kitten is (Oh! I see, approx. 18 days old)–well you could mix some wet food into the milk and make a thin gruel, opening the nipple up and letting her get more nutrition that way. It worked for my kittens before going on solid food.

Thank you Kittyzee! Yes i am thinking of trying the royal canin baby cat food for her. She isnt good on the bottle either and scoffs down too much and we have had a few milk out of the nose issues. Its hard coz if i have the nipple hole any smaller she cant get any and sucks the nipple flat but when its a tiny bit bigger it comes out her nose. Im worried she will get sick from it. Her eyes are open and ears erect but floppy at tge ends abd she is wobblong around exploring and plays a little with my fingers i can also feel teeth so i think she may be ready for kitty grewl.

I would try her on wet food by putting some on your finger, let her sniff it and then if she doesn’t lick it, then open her mouth and put a little on the roof of her mouth. Then she will see what it tastes like. Mixing it with milk to make a gruel is the next step if she doesn’t take to wet food right away. She could just be a small cat and never be very big and the runt of the litter, you never know how old they actually are when you take in a rescue. Congrats on the firefighters saving her in the wall!

I know this forum was posted a really long time ago but it really helped me! I have an orphaned 3 week old kitten that was doing the exact same thing and I have searched all over the Internet and this is the only place I found that address (not to mention acknowledge!) this kind of behavior! Thank you!

Thank you! I have been independently rescuing/ fostering animals (primarily cats/kittens) sentenced to be PTS and strays in my local area. It’s wonderful to have another support group that loves fur-babies like I do!

Thanks Heather! I experienced this behavior with one of my first kittens that I hand reared. He was so aggressive with the bottle that my hands were beginning to look like hamburger. I finally figured out that he wasn’t getting enough food fast enough…so making a gruel and opening up the nipple was what I did and he settled down after he realized he didn’t need to fight for every bite!

Thanks for saving the strays in your area. Hopefully with people like you and sites like this we can save them one cat at a time until everyone is on board with NO KILL!
