Years ago our family rec’d a fruitcake as a holiday gift. Mom found it in the back of the fridge sometime in Summer. Yes, it was shared with the birds as a Christmas in July treat! (Haven’t had one since) The link for recipes states chocolate fruitcake, that may be something I would try tho!

There are so many varieties of fruitcake–I’m sure there has to be one that I would like out there! I haven’t found it yet but maybe someday….

Yuk!!! Just,….well, yuk! I can’t think of one single way I could dress those nasty little, dried, candied fruits that would make them palatable….but my husband loves the stuff!

I have to admit I like fruitcake. Especially with a strong french roast coffee. It is yummmm toasted and slathered thick with whipped butter!

Krazikat, you and I are of one mind on this subject. We used to toast the fruitcake lightly, and slather it with butter. Not good for you, but pretty good to taste.

I have found that holiday fruitcake makes an excellent door stop.

my mom used to make fruit cakes as gifts and for eating. she would take weeks to make it and you could get drunk on a piece of it…

i’ve also seen people tossing it. even using catapults. the person who can toss it the furthest wins…

I love fruit cake. If you soak the fruit in brandy before you mix it with the dried ingredients it’s never “dry” and with a slice of strong, mature cheddar it can’t be beaten. I haven’t almond pasted and iced mine yet that’s a job for tomorrow.

    Here is Delia’s version:

PM knows her fruit cake TDKers. I used to make my Christmas fruit cake in October/November but Mr MS and I are the only ones who eat it and it’s way too much cake for us to eat.

I used to soak my fruit in gingerale for 48 hours but you can use almost anything for that, whiskey, sherry, bourbon, orange/lemon juice etc. After the cake is cooked and cooled you can also ‘feed’ the cake by poking holes in it with skewers and dribbling the alcohol of your choice over it in small amounts each day for a week or so. Fruit cake is sounding better every minute isn’t it.

I loved cover it with almond paste and then royalty icing. Rich and once a year decadence.

JK, the second link cake is traditional Christmas fruit cake style.

I know a few fruitcakes, but when they take their meds they are OK. 🙂
