We came home yesterday to discover that something had attacked our litter of almost 2 week old kittens. 5 of them were killed and we are left with 2 fairly strong males. I have cared for orphans before so I know what to do. My question is this: our local store doesn’t sell kitten formula so I bought baby formula for humans. They are eating like champs but concerned that this is wrong. Can’t get to the store in a bigger town until tomorrow evening. Any thoughts?

Does your local store sell goat’s milk. Cow milk is really hard for kittens to digest. If the baby formula doesn’t have too much cow’s milk in it, it is certainly better than letting them go hungry. Did the mama cat get killed too, or did she run away?

No goat’s milk either. It’s just a small local grocery. Mama cat might have been the one that killed the rest of the litter so we just stole the two that were left. Mama is very very wild. They seem to be doing just fine with the baby formula. Eating like pigs and bowel movements seem right as well. I may just keep on with this and not get actual kitten formula.

It’s more likely to have been a male cat. They tend to be very aggressive towards kittens that aren’t theirs. Call the vet on Monday and tell him what the formula has in it. He may advise you to add something to the diet, change the diet or even start adding in a little mashed up kitten or baby food to their diet. Even if they look like they are eating and growing correctly, you don’t want them to be short of some essential nutriment and suffer from it later in life.

good point. I’ll call the vet and see what he says. There has to be nutrients in human baby formula but may not be what kittens need. Thanks for the advice!

Baby formula is better than nothing in an emergency but it’s not rich enough for kittens, if you’re using it, make it up to double strength and try to get KMR or goats milk as soon as possible. Or you can click on the pink tag for kitten glop recipes, using things you may have at home or should be able to get at the store (eg evaporated milk).

These sites also have emergency formula recipes:

Make the kitten glop recipe above and start feeding your kittens right away. Meantime, order some KMR online and get it shipped to your address. Or goat’s milk or both, lol. Try putting some karo syrup or honey on their gums and tongue to perk up their sugar levels, then feed them. Good luck!
