DO NOT USE THE BOX, AV!!!! Chances are, it won’t be the color that you want! I’ve learned this from personal experience! Just sayin’. . . ๐Ÿ™‚

Just a note of experience with beauty supply stores such as Sally’s where I go to on occasion and like. The employees will not give “professional” advice as to what color/product to use on your hair.(Now this is the store where I shop). I was told it was because if they recommended thus and such, and the customer used purchased products that were advised by employees, and that the results were unsatisfactory(like fuschia colored hair), the customer could come back and sue for remunerations. I know, sounds strange……… Fortunately, I’ve always had good luck with “the box”.

I too have had mostly success with “the box”. The one time I didn’t, it was because I didn’t pay attention to the fact that the mix had obviously gone bad…

@fondahonda – the idea of a beauty supply store sounds lovely, unfortunately we dont have any of those ๐Ÿ™

I had to brave the world out there as a pale-carrot-haired girl today. People stared. With open, gaping mouths, they stared. The soonest my usual salon could help me is Thursday. I found another salon to help me tomorrow. They recommended cutting my waist lenght hair as short as I’m comfortable with, and then sticking as many highlights as possible on my head. Only other solution would be to strip my hair of all colour (peroxide), and then dyeing a new colour onto it. Apparently people who do that often have issues with their hair falling out in big clumps when they brush it. Cant imagine why . . .

I don’t know how I missed this thread but I did, lol. I dye my hair all the time with boxes. I will not pay to have it professionally done because I think it is to expensive and I haven’t ever had an issue with using boxed color. I’m a natural dirty blonde who likes to go a lighter blonde. I’ve done numberious different brands/shades with no issue and I don’t think I’ve ever done the strand test. I have natural golden blonde highlights in my hair and never had an issue. Skyron I’m almost wondering if the box you used had the wrong color in it or maybe someone switched it because they thought it was funny. I’m sorry about yor carrot colored hair. I’ve never had to strip my hair but I know people that have (natural hair color was a lighter color that went dark or black) and they haven’t ever had an issue with hair falling out. I’m thinking they are just giving you the worse possible scenario. Did they say what would happen if they dyed it a different color instead? Granted they would probably have to go with a darker color that doesn’t have much red/gold in it but it would be better then pale carrot, lol.

Oh my goodness waist length hair Sky? I’d smile a lot at the staring people like I’d meant it that way until the carrot fades. Yikes.

Or highlight the daylights out of it.

@ jax-dusky – because my hair is so long, i had to use 2 boxes of the stuff. I doubt that two boxes could happen to both be wrong. Not to slander any brands here, just as a warning – clairol nice & easy no 103. Natural beige blonde. Blonde my ***.

Buttercup, i cant live with pale carrot. When I’m in full sunlight, it looks like pale carrot infused with the light of God. It radiates a warm orange glow.

Skyron, the brand you mentioned was poo pooed by several hairdressers I went to for haircuts. I stopped using “it” 10 yrs ago, and sure enough after awhile using another brand for coloring, my hair was much “healthier” looking, and did not have the dried frazzled look, plus the color was consistant. Guess it is o.k to say that I use L’Oreal Excellence Creme, Dark Beige Blonde (7BB). Sorry you are glowing orange right now. ๐Ÿ™

Gently now! I’m a strawberry blond by nature who has those ‘silver’ highlights. I won’t touch anything but plant based dyes. It really can be a liberating color but may take some time. If your hair is waist length, it’s probably strong. But if worse comes to worse there’s always Locks of Love. All the best {{hugs}} Oh, and by the way, the color can take a couple days to settle if your using either chemical or plant.

Oh my, sorry you are having a negative experience with your first time at hair coloring Skyron. I am not able to actually see your hair but I am guessing you needed more “lift” in the developer. If you have strong red/gold undertones to your hair it probably needed 30 volume developer and a lot of products seem to use 20 volume. If the developer didn’t lift enough of the reds from your hair it can’t totally add the blonde you were trying to achieve. Then again I have no idea what products are available where you live. Don’t panic, hair is resilient and this is not as scary as it seems. When a haircolor is wrong don’t try to correct it so fast you add another mistake to the one you’ve got going already. Can you wear your hair up for a few days so the long oranged tresses aren’t so distracting? That is what I have done in the past when an “experiment” didn’t turn out as I had hoped. You can get dye removers, you have to find out if the dye you used was metal or plant based. Maybe you can find out online since you don’t have beauty supply stores. Is there an 800# on the box you can call for information? There used to be a product called Metalex by Clairol and you combed it in and wrapped your hair in a warm towel then shampooed it out after 30 minutes or so. See if a dye remover can tone down some of the orange. Then consider a temporary color in an “ash” tone to put over any remaining orange. Temporary colors come out in 1 or 2 shampoos. The company in the U. S. is called Roux. I believe Clairol has temporary colors also. Choose light or medium ash to counter the orange. FondaHonda mentioned the color base thing in her post here. Hair has a natural base color and it has to be combined with a complimentary tone to look natural. In some hair it is ash tones, blue and greens and other hair it is reds. You comb the temporary color into dry hair and rinse it out. If you hate it at least you just shampoo a couple times and you are back to where you started. I have a couple friends who are/were hairdressers and they love my hair and I color it myself. You can do it. Don’t be discouraged, you need more information and a good temporary fix. See if the temporary colors can help until you find someone who colors their own hair who can help you. Get this first problem fixed so you don’t have to cut your hair and then you can see about switching to golden blonde. Good luck and give Tiigy some scritches.

AV! You have a friend to help you. You are using semi permanent color? You can remove all traces of semi permanent color with dye remover or thorough shampoos. We have Sally Beauty Supply in the U.S. to get a variety of products from if anything should go awry. (And it won’t!) You don’t want grey right now. You don’t have to have grey right now. If you are really unhappy with your hair after it is colored you can restore it to its present color. What you are doing is very different than what Skyron is trying to do. The “blonde thing” is tricky until you figure out what works best for your hair. Adding chestnut to basically chestnut/auburn hair isn’t going to cause orange. Let your friend give you some help and give Cuddles some scritches.

Av, be cautious, but dont be scared off just cause I had a bad experience. Do the strand test, and if you really dont like what you see, dont do it. If it turns into a colour you like, or could get used to, then go for it.

Krazikat, thats some really good info. And you are right, my hair does have a lot of red undertones I guess. My mom told me yesterday I used to have red hair when I was little – only started going blonde when I was 3. If I Had know that, I would have reconsidered the whole thing. My step-sister is a natural redhead, and oh my, the things that have happened to her hair *sighs* but she’s arty and crafty and eccentric, so she always had a way of making it work.

I’m not kidding when I say I had a feeling that was at the “root” of your problem Skyron. See if you can get a temporary light ash blonde rinse to quiet the orange down for a few days, wear your hair up and do some research online and at the library. Changing your hair in any significant way is always a shock, even if it turns out as you envision it it. I think you’re going to need a blue or green based dye, but wait a few days!

jcat, its not that hard to get. Just expensive. Start with one box of clairol to get the pale carrot, then go to a salon, get an ash blonde tint, and whack 45 platinum blonde highlights in there for good measure – end result = strawberry blonde.
