30 to 1? Really? I don’t think a “sex offender” database for animal abusers is the right way. Like the sex offender database, the only people that it will really effect is people who ended up on there accidently (for example, someone 18 having sex with their 16 year old girlfriend) and ostracize them. I can definably see some young guy/girl accidently doing harm by neglect or something, even thought their intentions were to help the animal.

It’s not going to stop or even slow down animal abuse, most likely someone doing that doesn’t really care what society thinks, you think pedophiles care about being on a list? You can have all the legistlation/laws about something, but as long as the public themselves are ignorant/passive/or willing about this, things won’t change. Take 1920s prohibition….all the laws against booze did nothing if public percption is different. There are ALOT of misconceptions misconceptions and wrong conceptions about animals that blacklisting people will not fix. I don’t think it will pass so easily in the house here, and I think this is just another way to moniter felons in texas (they wanted a felon database like sex offenders)/.

Now habitual offenders….that list could work for that. I think you should have to show intent and constant pattern to be put on the “list”. not just a one time offense. There are just too many grey areas. The last thing I want to worry about is become blacklisted when I go to the vet just because of an accident involving my pet 😐

I am not “for” animal abuse, I just have a real problem with these “blacklists” for criminals. If someone is convicted for felony animal abuse, they probably are going to be ostrcized by their own community, there is no need for that indivdual to be slammed 7 years later, after everthing is passed, served their time, and have yet to reoffend. My opinion is, if you committed a crime, and you have served your time, even if it’s a felony, it is in the past and you should no longer be looked down upon. (Of course this all flies out the window if you re-offend the same way, habitual offenders obviously don’t care, and goes further then an “innocent mistake”)

I hope, as a Texan and a pet lover, that this will pass. But…. our state is suffering from a huge deficit and they are cutting things out of the budget like crazy. Still, I will send an email to my representative to support the passage of this bill.

I just sent an email to my representative and then to my friends here asking them to do the same.
