Hi all we found a month old kitten the other day and took her to the vet.The vet said she was healthy, but didn’t give me many tips or much advice on things other than how to give her medicine. She’s on a preventative de wormer and is on KMR but I know we should be starting her weaning process and trying to get her to poo. She does fine in the litter box ( peeing on her own fine ) and eating when prompted but she hasn’t passed a bowel movement and won’t eat on her own and seems disinterested in the food unless I’m there to give it to her. I’m gone for four-five hours and I want to make sure she’s going to be fine while I’m at work since she won’t eat on her own. Any advice – related or not to these two issues- would be greatly appreciated.

Did the vet give you any idea on how old your kitten is? This makes a big difference on helping you with feeding and litter box usage. I would start her out on wet food…a very fine pate’ style with no large shreds or chunks and you can mix it with formula so she gets the hydration she needs.

If she won’t eat unless you feed her, then that’s what you will have to go with. She is probably old enough to go 5 to 6 hours between feedings anyway. Kittens usually aren’t weaned until the 8 to 10 week mark, and I’m thinking she is probably younger than that so the formula would be good for her anyway.

Yeah the vet said she’s around a month or so. She started eating without the bottle but she still needs it to be put in front of her. I’ll mix the formula in with the wet food. Thank you 🙂

    Hi Lily,

Congrats on your new kitty 🙂 I recently was in a very similar situation — have had my Celeste for two weeks now and she was also about the same age when I found her.

She was eating fine but had the same bathroom issue as yours. It took her a few days to pass a stool and I think it may have been slightly stress related because of a change to her environment. They also can take a few days to get things “moving” again after they’re taken in, fed and given medication/dewormer. Give her a few days. Celeste took about 3 days to pass a stool, but she finally did! I would say if after the end of 3 days if she still hasn’t gone, give the vet a call, but no need for alarm yet.

As for the food, have you tried different kinds? Maybe she’s just being finicky. It’s good she is eating when shown, but I would try mixing it up a bit. My kitten loves chicken patte and salmon — I feed her Natural Balance for kittens and Wellness core (also for kittens). She enjoys both of them a lot. I also second kittyzee’s advice; try mixing it with a little bit of formula. Also, kittens sometimes take a bit to get used to a bowl, so maybe try putting the food on flat saucer or paper plate; not as daunting to a tiny kitten. She will catch on quickly, don’t worry!

Make sure to give her lots of cuddles and make her feel loved / safe, and she will pick up on things and adjust remarkably quickly. You’re doing everything right by getting her vet care and feeding her and watching her bowel movements, etc.
