Here’s one that I’ve kept for the most part. Raised by depression-era parents, it’s a way of life for me to turn off the light when I leave the room, keep the shower short (years of Dad’s “2 more minutes and I’m shutting the hot water off!” will do that), shut the door (what, do we live in a barn – are we heating the neighborhood now??), and the ever-popular “don’t stand there with the fridge door open”.

Years ago, I decided that my New Years resolution would be that if I was thirsty, I will not stand there with the fridge door open. If there isn’t something that I immediately see that I want to drink, I drink water. It works, and what do you know – it’s good for you!

Good stuff Joan…My only resolution this year is to throw away even less food (which isn’t hardly any at all) and maybe try and lookout for the birds a bit more. With cats around…you have to be very careful about encouraging the birds in the neighborhood. =D

When I went for my annual physical just before Christmas I got the happy news that I had lost 12 pounds since March. This was AFTER the cruise! My resolution is to try and keep up the good work and build on it. I got a dehydrator for Christmas so I have dehydrated some apples and pineapple tidbits and am trying to stay away from the candy basket and to eat a smaller portion at lunch. Also trying to drink more water and once Bestbuy has the Wii Fit back in stock, I am goting to use that instead of paying for a gym. Anyone else use the Wii Fit? Anyone else use a dehydrator? Any recipes to share?

Yup, I agree…Time to drink more water…it’s the wine of life!

*bump* this really does help, whether you are trying to lose weight or just trying to eat/drink healthier.

Kykat, we don’t have a Wii Fit but we have several friends here who do and they all really like it. One of my friends got hers as a Christmas gift and was very incensed because the Wii Fit told her she was overweight. I had to remind her that it’s comparing her to tiny little Japanese people and so she shouldn’t take that too much to heart!

I’m with Karenopa in trying to be a better shopper and thus throw less food away. I used to shop for produce once every three weeks and a large amount of it would spoil. And I’m trying to be creative with what is leftover so that we will actually eat it a second time.

My fitness goals are 1) Try really hard not to fall off of my bike this year; 2) Enter, and finish, the MS 150 mile ride; 3) Increase my speed and endurance on my bike.

Well with my diagnosis yesterday of having diabetes, my goals are amped up a bit. I need to figure out how to eat and make better choices. Are there any diabetics out there and what do you choose when you are out to eat?

I’ve only done new year’s resolutions twice.

Last year I quit drinking any pop and I’m going to still try stick with that.

This year its to quit eating chips. Now that’s going to be hard 🙂

Another guideline: everything in moderation. Don’t sit down with the whole bag of chips, grab a bunch, close up and put away the bag, and eat what’s in front of you. My former boss is a type 1 diabetic, and would count out the number of Pringles he could have for lunch! I think for type 2, you have to focus on fruits and veggies and I believe the rule is the brighter the color, the better. For instance, romaine lettuce instead of iceberg.
