I’ve always been a dog person, but a queen littered under our cabin steps last month while we were on vacation, and I’ve ended up with two darling little male kittens. They’ve survived being bottle babies and are now 5.5 weeks old and beginning to act more like kittens and less like babies. They’ve started running and playing and pouncing… And, suddenly, within the last few days, the larger kitten (Bran) has started hissing and spitting. Initially, he was doing it at things that surprised/startled him, but now he’s started doing it at Ginger, his brother. Is this all developmentally normal and no big deal? Do I just let them work out their differences? Ginger didn’t seem affected by Bran’s display…just stared at him curiously.

    Thanks!

Yes, it’s normal. Kittens hiss and spit, bite, kick and play roughly–especially little male kittens. There are times when you may think a kitten is being hurt badly by the other at the pressure of the biting kitten. Just gently pull them apart and separate them. I have a boy cat that is twice the size of his sisters. He thinks it’s great fun, to pounce on them and chase them–usually before it’s time to eat. They do a lot of whining but he seems oblivious to it and keeps doing it anyway. 🙄 Remember also when they get to weigh approximately 2 pounds, they will be big enough to be neutered and that calms down their drive to populate the world. Most boy cats stay ‘kitteny’ longer than females do, IMO, and you are lucky you have littermates that will get to live out their lives together!
