Hello all, I rescued a baby at 1 week old. He has been going strong, with the exception of conjunctivitis. He had gone from eating 5-10ml every feeding, to eating 15-20ml. Problem is he has gone back to only eating 5-10ml. He tries, but it seems like he can’t get milk. And normally, when I stimulate him, he goes quiet and relaxes. Now he yells really loudly, like he is pain. Sometimes, he doesn’t go to sleep when he is done eating. He just stares outside the cage. I’m new to all of this, and I don’t want to lose this kitten. He is only being treated with a topical ointment for his eyes. He pees and poops normally too.

Thanks for rescuing! They are so very fragile at this age. Please consider taking him to a vet tomorrow, emergency vets are open Sundays. If that is absolutely not possible, please get with a cat rescue group near you and make an emergency call to them. Google to find organizations. They may be able to come to you to assess him.

He has a sore butt and that is not normal. Are you using soft cotton and warm water to stimulate?? He also needs to eat every 3 hours, a few ounces each time. Don’t want to scare you but you need assistance with this ASAP.

Yeah, I can’t afford an emergency vet : And I wasn’t using soft cotton, but I will start doing that. He does seem hungry, as he chuffs around and sucks on my fingers and his blanket, I just can’t seem to get him to eat from his bottle. He’s always been really fussy, but lately he has been getting so fussy he doesn’t want to suck. He tries, but then he just chews the nipple or tries to bite the top. Then he sucks for a while, but when I check how much he only gets like 2ml at a time. I’ve been making sure he gets at least 10ml. At night I make sure he gets 15ml. He just doesn’t seem to attach to the bottle. And there aren’t any cat rescue groups close enough to me, just the humane society.

You can try syringing some milk into him, if you have a syringe used for cat meds. Be careful not to choke him or have it go to his lungs. Never feed bottle or syringe with him on his back. He should be on his stomach, face up to bottle (same position as if he was nursing from Mom). Also try making hole bigger in nipple. Good luck!

Here is a link for some information on how to care for newborn kittens. It helps explain how to feed, how much to feed, etc. I hope it is helpful for you. Best of luck to you and the baby kitten.

If his condition weakens too much I am going to start syringe feeding him, at least until I can call my vet on monday. What is normal for a kitten 2 weeks of age?

Chaos, check out these youtube clips on raising orphaned kittens. The fourth one (they call it chapter four) is on feeding and it includes a feeding chart you can freeze on. I too think it might be trouble with the hole in the teat, this clip covers that. I think (and hope) you might find it useful.

I just widened the opening, he got 15ml down (: now he is cuddling with my 8mo old cat. He is still very fussy, and its hard to get him to latch, but this should be good till i can call my vet. Thank you all (:

That’s good news, the more she looks after him and teaches him good cat behaviour, the easier for you (and him).

Yeah haha, and luckily she is being vaccinated so he won’t pass any maybe diseases. She tries to play rough with him, she doesn’t realize he’s just too little.
