What a sweetie!! What else can I say, such a baby…
Unbelieveably adoreable!!!!!!!!
what an interesting name for a kitten
What a beautiful boy!!!
*hugs him close and sneaks him into my pocket*
Hmm, looks like I’ve become a pickpocket. Here, GM, you can have him back.
What a fuzzball! Here, let me cuddle him right quick (then I’ll pass him on down the line).
Awww! Lil chubby baby. Love the lil pink tongue tip sticking out. Very snuggle worthy!
OHHH SUCH A SMALL LITTLE THING *melting from the cuteness*
How precious! I haven’t seen one that tiny in a looooonnnggg time!
Wow, he’s one of the most unusual fuzzbuts I’ve ever seen. He is going to be quite handsome when he is all grown up.
Is this kitten wearing white eye liner? I’m used to seeing black, but the white is quite striking.
Heavens to MergatroiD! But I quite agree…
THANK YOU, SHARON!!!!! I though I was the only person on God’s green earth who said that! At least, if I’m crazy, I’m not alone. 😆
😆
Susan, I liked MerceDes! 😆
I think that wee pink tongue is just way too cute (as has been mentioned). What a handsome little fuzzball! Oooh, I wanna share in the cuddling and woozling of this little baby!
I want him! I love the pink tongue, just as Judy said.
Went to the shelter the other day and they had just rescued a kitten. “Homework,” one of the volunteers told me. The kitten couldn’t have been more then a couple of days old, still hand the umbil. cord attached. Kitten will require round the clock care. For the short time I was there (lunch hour) they went right to work on the kitten, clean up, warm her, bottle feed, set her up in a carrier with a yarn kitty as a temp “mom”, Hope he/she is going to be ok.
I hope the kitten will be all right. Two of my three were very young rescues who had to be bottle fed. Makes one feel like a mom.
What an adorable baby fuzzbutt are you sure that it is a stuffed kitty from Harrod’s? What is the difference between a British shorthair and an American shorthair except for the accent?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_shorthair
Article is pretty good at describing them. Friend has one and he’s a riot (the cat, not my friend!). They tend to be ‘stockier’ than the normal kitties. You can just tell that he’s lower to the ground than your are used to. They also SEEM to have a slightly ‘smooshed’ face, but not as extreme as a Persian.
‘low to the ground’ would be euphemistic for this one….IT CAN’T WALK!
I’ve been wondering if there’s any real difference between American and European shorthair. To me they look the same. ❓
Their faces are a little rounder vs. pointy on the ASH. We used to have one, Scratchie. She’s waiting for us at Rainbow Bridge. (R.I.P. – 1995-2005)
Thank you for answering!
(PS. I am sorry for Scratchy)
suppose to be isn’t – sorry.
teeny tiny baby! So cute!
A tiny sweetie. MerD, it definitely looks like the white eyeliner will enhance those baby blue eyes.
Wook at that widdle tongue! Adorable—and I could have squished yesterday’s kitten until it begged for mercy!
Ivory Bill–Joshua is quite the dapper gentleman, eh?
Hello everyone! Can you believe Monday is already here…..where did the weekend go?????
LOOK at those cute little teenie tiny ears……what an adorable little ball of fuzzzzzzzz!!
Have a great day all!!
HEY DEE! Made those chocolate french toasts yesterday, OMG! I was in heaven….absolutely deeeeeeeeeelish!! Thanks for the recipe!! Between the chocolate and the coffee, I got lots done around the house yesterday!! I made more for everyone this morning…..enjoy! OH! mocha lattes too for a double whammy jolt!!
Aren’t those great? Nothing like starting off the day with a fried chocolate sandwich and strong coffee! haha! I drank so much cuban coffee yesterday—I got the jitters—I think I’m an addict!
Most of you seem to be against Wal Mart but I bought the most fantastic and cheap ice cream there Saturday. It is their Great Value brand it is called Mocha Mudslide. Coffe, chocolate pieces and Irish cream flavor. My tongue did a “happy Dance” I almost knocked myself unconscience. Where a disguise and sneak in the store grab the ice cream and checkout quick before anyone notices you.
Hey Susan…thanks for the ice cream tip. I’m drooling just reading the name……mocha mudslide……yum! Must stop at WalMart on way home…….
I spent the week-end with some friends and we had it too!! Yum!!!!
Yikes, that should of been wear – I really do need to proof read before hitting the send button.
Hey Susan, mocha mudslide, wow, just the sound of it makes my mouth water. Probably don’t have it here in Canada 🙁
If you download Google toolbar you can have a spell check.
No I don’t work for Google, wish I did!
That ice cream is awsome. just had it for the first time in august 2007. it’s better than most high end brands. very yummy!!!!
I was in Walgreens getting passport photos taken and while my hubby and I were waiting, we wandered around the store. We went past the frozen section and I saw that Haagen Daaz has my favorite flavored ice cream which is Mocha Chip. Yummy. Hubby had to drag me away from the glass door because I was fogging up the glass. hehehe
Love the russian blue kitties. Tuxies too.
Uh Oh! I’m having Mocha overload……must….have…..some….NOW!!!
Passport? Are you getting to go on a fun trip?
no ppearson only getting them for future use. Nothing on the horizon trip wise.
Hey I wnat the chocolate french toast recipe. Is this one of the TKDers recipes or this a share from another gifted cook on this site.
Please share, so i can share. Okay share the second batch. LOL!
cute Cute CUTE! WARNING! WARNING! CUTE OVERLOAD!
Two snuggle kittens in two days !
Awwwwww….a BABY. I love the ‘sad’ baby eyes. Somebody else beat me to him but that’s ok. I’ll have my revenge later.
Happy Monday TDKers.
nanana!! I got him first!!!
Haha!
Best be careful GM, HM is mighty mean with that pitchfork!!
Yeah, but that doesn’t give her the right to keep them all for herself. 🙂 I didn’t think this was a might makes right society. 🙂
Uh oh. I see a wrestling match coming on. 🙂
To your corners!
If I want to take all the kittens, the fates will let it be so. You have all been warned 😉
Yee be warned…..aaaaargh!!
Sorry, had to throw that in, so darn anxious for Jack Sparrow to come back…….
Cat hoarding is a serious psychological disorder, HM. Maybe we should have you evaluated and take a kitten or two out of the backpack in the meantime.. 🙂
What’s one more psychological disorder? I already have more than my share, one more won’t hurt anything. 🙂
I recently told two new family members to the family that you don’t have to be crazy to join our family but it sure helps.
Oh so true. I’ve decided that it’s a prequiste for joining the family, makes life more interesting. Need it in my life, just work and home then prepare for work and house cleaning. Need to get my entertainment somewhere. LOL! ;O)
Oh little Digger of Manchester
Adorable British blue
Cute tongue that he cannot sequester
This picture was right on cue
Right on target, Meezer…
Cute little Digger is just begging to be held and cuddled. I volunteer!!
A-DOR-A-BLE!!!!!!!!!!
Ivory Bill-Your Joshie is so beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing him with us. I am so glad his health is better.
Everyone-Well it turns out that I will not be a great aunt just yet after all. It was a false alarm. I took one of my nephews camping this weekend. The weather here was perfect and we all had a great time. But oh how the Meezers missed us! They were into every piece of the camping supplies before we could get them put away again. I actually had to leave my smelly camping jacket out on the couch because Ferrule had made a nest out of it. Such silly creatures.
Sorry about the news, but better a false alarm than an early loss !
This little kitty is just precious. I love the little ears!!!
Absurdly Cool has had some great Freebies lately…

There is no such thing in anyone’s life as an unimportant day.
-Alexander Woollcott
One of my favorite stories Dad told when I was growing up was about Alexander Woolcott. Apparently, one of his friends’ wife had had a baby, and Woolcott was sending a celebratory telegram (as was the custom of the day). He told the telegrapher to send the following message “Congratulation on your newborn, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.”
The telegrapher told Woolcott that he could not sign the telegram with the name of the President. He then replied, “Fine, just sign it Alexander Woolcott.”
“You can’t use his name, either!”
“But I AM Alexander Woolcott!” (pulling out ID)
“In that case, Mr. Woolcott, you can sign it ‘Franklin Delano Roosevelt.'”
And I thought the world had forgotten him…
Great story!
Man U FUZZ!
Looks like he’s trying to live up to his name already!
I was going to post that! Glad someone thought of that…
Digger is so tiny. Such a cutie.
Manchester United!!!!! Fuzz
Ohhhh— Can we kiss his little head?
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh such a tiny gray boy.
OOOOH! What a darling little baby! I’ll pocket little Digger next and give him back when I’m through cuddling him.
Squeeee! He’s so sweet! The fluff, the floppy ears, the innocent blue eyes and that delicious pink tongue to top it all. Where is the cuddling line?
I’m behind you, Miu.
Apple Walnut Pie
from Stop and Smell the Rosemary,
Recipes and Traditions to Remember
1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
INGREDIENTS FOR THE FILLING:
2-1/2 pounds Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (about 5 to 6 medium)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1-1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch, blended with 1/4 cup cold water
INGREDIENTS FOR THE TOPPING:
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed
3/4 cup walnuts, chopped
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
________________
1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped to soft peaks
TO PREPARE:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 9-inch pie crust and bake until almost done, about 12 to 15 minutes.
Place apples in a large skillet and sprinkle with lemon juice. Set aside. Combine lemon zest, nutmeg, cinnamon, and sugar. Sprinkle over apples. Bring apples to a boil over moderate heat. Adjust heat so mixture bubbles gently. Cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, 10 to 12 minutes, or until apples release their juice. Increase heat to high. Boil uncovered, stirring occasionally, an additional 5 minutes, or until liquid is reduced by half. Reduce heat to low. When apples stop bubbling, stir in cornstarch mixture. Continue cooking, stirring just until mixture clears and turns very thick, about 2 minutes.
Combine flour, sugar, and walnuts. Add butter and toss with a fork until crumbly.
Spoon apple filling into partially baked pie crust, mounding in center. Crumble topping over apples, but do not pack down. Bake 30 to 40 minutes, or just until the filling bubbles over and topping is crisp. Cool several hours before cutting. Top each slice of pie with a spoonful of whipped cream.
SERVES: 8
Thank you Dee…..I’ll be making this one for sure……could go for a slice now…..cute little cup of cuban coffee on the side would be nice too (that stuff is like dynamite!!)….
Sure looks good! I may try this recipe…
My, my what nice apholstry you have sweety! To cute, best seen and cuddled on a Monday!
**3 Proven Skin Care Ingredients**
Just because it’s pricey and comes in a pretty jar, it doesn’t necessarily mean a product has more effective skin care ingredients.
Often, “lower-priced products may work better than their more expensive counterparts,” says Arthur W. Perry, MD, author of the book Straight Talk About Cosmetic Surgery. Whether it’s $9 or $99, here are three key ingredients to consider.
According to Dr. Perry, vitamin C (also known as L-ascorbic acid), alpha-hydroxy acids (also known as AHAs, fruit acids, and glycolic acid), and retinoids or retinol-like compounds (tretinoin, retinol, etc.) are a few of the handful of skin product ingredients backed by strong scientific evidence that they boost skin health and appearance.
What About the Rest?
That doesn’t mean other ingredients won’t benefit your skin; it’s just that the scientific proof isn’t as solid for them. The main reason some skin care ingredients fail to deliver? Their molecules are too big to penetrate your skin when applied topically.
Other useful ingredients: polyhydroxy acids, beta hydroxyl acids, hydroquinones, and certain antioxidants.
And I thought as many times as AMC has shown “Catwoman” recently that no one was using that stuff anymore…
The only thing I’ve ever put on my skin was soap and water, and I have the skin of a 16 year old. I’m the only woman in my office who can get away with just wearing lipstick. If it’s not soap and water, I break out something awful.
Most 16 year olds have zitts-o-mania! I know just a saying like when people say they selpt like a baby what they woke up every two hours wanting to be fed and then they soiled their diapers!
I have never had a zit in my life.
But in HM’s attic is this oil painting of a woman, bearing the faintest of resemblances, but so covered with zits, age spots and wrinkles as to be nearly unrecognizable…
😈
If I ever hear someone tell a teen that they will grow out of acne, I may scream! Yes, it does get better, but it’s a real drag to get a zit on top of a wrinkle. I don’t wear any makeup, but my peeve is that my eyebrows must be straight!
HM, yes, great hygiene helps BUT attribute it to great genes.
Hey, I’ve read that book, “The Picture of Huddy’s Mama” Very good indeed!
Actually, it’s “The PORTRAIT of Huddy’s Mama,” but I’ll give you props for actually having read it and not just watched the old black-and-white movie version!
You guys are funny as hell!! Yes, it is a genetic thing so I can’t take ANY credit at all for it. I got nice skin from both sides of the family so I’m lucky and blessed.
None of you have that portrait. If you did, you’d have noted the pitchfork in the far right hand corner. 🙂
Some of the great lies my mama told me – oh its just baby fat you’ll grow out of that and my oily face and hair will be normal by the time I am 21 years old. I need wrinkle cream and an astringent!
OMG!!!!! How adorable!!!!
**Women Binge Drinkers Double Cancer Risk**
Women who binge drink dramatically raise their chances of getting breast cancer, according to a new Danish study that demonstrates a definite connection between breast cancer and bingeing. Danish doctors found that taking 16 to 21 drinks over the course of a weekend, which is the equivalent of two bottles of wine, more than doubled the risk, raising it by a whopping 150 percent!
The researchers tracked the health and lifestyles of 17,647 nurses, beginning in 1993. By 2001, 475 of them had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Those who took four or five drinks on a weekday raised their cancer risk by 55 percent, as compared to taking just one drink. Women who drank large amounts over the course of the week — 22 to 27 drinks — raised their risk by 130 percent. But the women who binge drank 16 to 21 drinks over the weekend are the ones who raised their risk to an alarming 150 percent.
Study leader Dr. Lina Mirch said, “The impact of alcohol consumption in weekdays or weekends has not been addressed in previous studies of risk of breast cancer. To minimize the risk of breast cancer our data imply that women should not do any binge drinking or drink large amounts of alcohol. The detrimental effect of binge drinking suggests a biological different effect of alcohol or its metabolites, when high serum concentrations of alcohol might be related to peaking levels of estrogen. This could lead to an enhancement of the harmful effects of alcohol on breast cancer.”
Think I’ll forward this to my brother’s step-daughter! OH! I forgot!! They know more than we do, so I’d be wasting my time!
Tee hee. Yep, they know everything, you’re an idiot. That’s not me talking, I think you’re a sweetie! I enjoyed flying down to FL on my broom for our virtual breakfast on the beach last week. BTW, there’s room for others on my broom if I go again, (only no pitchforks, HM!) kitties and mimosas are welcome. (Brooms are exempt from motor vehicle laws, and in Jersey, everything is legal as long as you don’t get caught.)
What’s up with the no pitchfork thing? And does that also mean no purple Dyson? I have to know…….*captain kirk voice* I…….hAVE…..to…..KNOW!
Ok, but the pitchfork must be stowed safely while in flight…
Mark Twain once said that when he went off to college, his father was not very smart. Once Twain graduated, he said, he was surprised at how much the old man had learned.
Latest Michael Vick news…

Digger is adorable! He’s just the age in this picture as the three tiny tuxies one of the neighborhood ferals is raising in a box on our porch. I’ll have to take a photo soon — this is clearly just the right moment to make people melt at the cuteness and want to adopt them.
In pet food news: the FDA and USDA held a joint press conference on *Saturday afternoon* (apparently five o’clock Friday is no longer late enough to bury bad news) to claim that they see no reason to think that melamine is in the human food chain, although there’s plenty of evidence that it is. They gave the standard speech: “We have full confidence in the food supply” — sounds just like what was said about every former appointee about to be thrown off the train. Heckuva job, guys. The unusual timing was to make sure they got their disclaimer in before the New York Times article out this morning that will scare your socks off. That article, and much more, are linked from this blog post: http://www.horsesass.org/?p=2861
Sorry to keep beating that drum, but we and our beloved furballs are being poisoned for profit, and the regulatory agencies we thought were supposed to keep this from happening are more concerned with keeping their own hands clean.
I’m gonna go snuffle some kitten tummies now before going back to read more news. Stay balanced, y’all.
“Light is the task where many share the toil.” — Homer
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” — Helen Keller
We all need to share all the information that we can, so that we might be best educated to take a voice in the situation. I have talked with several that have lost their pet, and they are the ones that these regulatory agencies should have to see first hand. Then perhaps they might take it a bit more seriously. They will certainly take it serious as pet owners prepare lawsuits.
Keep beating the drum and heralading the news. We are all ears-
unlike today’s regal little Blue Boy.
Oh, so cute. I would love to rub that lil nose.
Sorry to spoil everyone’s day but you ******HAVE TO READ THIS***. We need to demand our reps and senators get federal standards for pet food NOW. Am not supposed to do private stuff at work, but this is essential information!!!!!!!
Full details:
http://www.itchmo.com/read/melamine-spiking-in-food-widespread-for-years_20070429
We will just let the story speak for itself. No more denials,
no more hemming and hawing by the FDA. Time to take massive
cautionary action is now. It’s not just animal feed anymore.
It’s not just pet food. It’s a crisis. It’s been going
on for years.
Highlights below from the IHT article:
Here at the Shandong Mingshui Great Chemical Group
factory, huge boiler vats are turning coal into melamine, which is
used to create plastics and fertilizer.
But the leftover melamine scrap, small acorn-sized chunks
of white rock, is then being sold to local entrepreneurs, who
say they secretly mix a powdered form of the scrap into
animal feed to artificially enhance the protein level.
“It just saves money,†says a manager at an animal
feed factory here. “Melamine scrap is added to animal feed to
boost the protein level.â€
The practice is widespread in China. For years animal
feed sellers have been able to cheat buyers by blending the
powder into feed with little regulatory supervision, according to
interviews with melamine scrap traders and agricultural
workers here.

**California man arrested for allegedly stealing 26 cars to see girlfriend **
Canadian Press
Published: Monday, April 30, 2007
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Whenever Antonio Moreno wanted to see his girlfriend, he’d jump in a car and drive right over.
But there was a problem. The 26 cars Moreno jumped into all belonged to someone else.
Authorities arrested the 31-year-old near his suburban home on Wednesday. They said he was behind the wheel of a 1987 Toyota when they found him.
Police say that since January, Moreno had been stealing Toyotas and Nissans by using a simple device that starts Japanese cars of a certain age. Acting on a tip, members of a regional auto-theft task force took him into custody.
He was “stealing vehicles as transportation to pursue their relationship,” said a police spokesman in Santa Barbara, where some of the thefts took place.
He didn’t have a driver’s licence or car of his own.
His girlfriend, who was not arrested, told authorities she had been trying to dump him.
Moreno faces charges of auto theft.
I should go into Petsmart and get a shot of Lily if someone hasn’t taken her home already. There should be a law against being that cute. (grey and white American shorthair tabby, about 6-8 weeks old.
Someone did. Oh well. 🙂 She’s got a home, and that is good.
Digger is the cutie today
He’s truly safe, this dude
He comes from somewhere far away
And doesn’t get US food.
I left a post yesterday, but was unsure if you spotted it. I have a group of high school kids that believe poetry is dead. I would love to take them some of your poems to show them that communication in poetry is not for just the old. (or from their point of view the dead) I have taken modern poetry to them, yet they complain it is boring–anything that isn’t a cell phone has become boring. I have even stressesd that texting can be done in a poetic style. Do you mind if I show them a poem or two that you have composed for TDK?
Sox’s Mom–there were a couple of posts early this a.m. (pre-Digger) in reply to you. I am teaching a 6-week poetry unit right now to my 7th graders that was well-liked at the end (despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth at the beginning). The reasons why and one particularly well-liked poem were listed there. Another is Judith Viorst’s “Mother Doesn’t Want a Dog.” I also point out how the beloved “The Eyes of Texas are Upon You” began as a student protest song!
Make poetry seem like rebellion, and the students eat it up!
Thank you I will go back and read them. I use Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market and a fruit tray. This they love, but most of the time they just groan and complain.
Tell you what–one teacher to another–e-mail me via Catster (use the link above), let me know you’re Sox’s mom, and give me an address where I can e-mail you. I’ll send you what I have in Word format.
What on earth do they think LYRICS are?
I have a good friend who has taught prose composition at the college level for many years and is a widely-published poet, who says he always gets past this barrier by raising the question of favorite lyrics. And you might point out to your students that this “poetry is dead” mindset is something that simply advertises how immature they are — it’s a blind spot that *every* generation goes through and grows out of. Tell ’em it’s old and passe, and they’ll get past it right quick.
I’d dose ’em with Patti Smith — esp. the “Trampin’ ” album.
My friend the professor is deeply into Arcade Fire, although I really don’t “get” that group. I’m still into Richard Thompson, Lou Reed, and Black47. Or invite some hip hop poets to do a
slam at your school. That’ll fix it, *and* get the kids writing their own poetry. Teenagers thrive on energy and anger, and so does a lot of that sort of poetry.
Good luck planting the seed!
I do this with them at the end and they do like it. Unfortunately the AP Exam is in less than 2 weeks–the poets that they all dread. I do use Iron Maiden when teaching The Rime of the Ancient Mariner–that gets their attention. I just love the lightness of Ivory Bill’s witty ditties!
I have always wanted to do a classical-to-contemporary compare/contrast. I’ve thought of Service’s “The Shooting of Dan McGrew” vs. Croce’s “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim” (same theme, different settings/eras), and some others that have now escaped me since my 11-year-old decided that now was the opportune time to let me know the extent of his boredom by pestering me until I blew. Anyway, that should give you an idea.
My father was an English professor who asked me to get some of my folksingers singing poems such as Annabelle Lee by Joan Baez and The Highwayman by Phil Ochs to use as a teaching tool. And of course, the Unicorn from Shel Silverstein sung by none other than the Irish Rovers ..
Sharon,
I liked the Unicorn song, too. Now, I’m humming it! 🙂
You got your green alligators, your long-necked geese….
Point out to them that that’s exactly what music is.
I mean their music.
I do the music stuff too, but have been working with AP English students preping for exams. They have to get through some of the other stuff first.
I did repy, Sox’s Mom. I suggested you might use the poem I left for Smokey, Vee, and Groucho on Saturday. I also said something ugly about Rod McKuen.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I will do that–I didn’t go back to look again.
(she hangs her head in shame)
I just wanted to thank all of you who visited Joshua’s page and said such nice things about my friend,
Olive and I just visited Joshua’s page! He’s so handsome! We sent a friend request, too!
I’ve never seen a cat like that. He is gorgeous.
My cat has velvety grey fur, but I have no clue what breed she is. DSH – is what the tag read when she found me at the shelter
Hey Ivory Bill! Joshua is quite a handsome fuzzbutt! I left him a couple treats. I need to get my boys on this catster page…..
I think that DSH is a reference to domestic short hair.
Yep… pure bred domestic short hair 😀 One of these days I’ll get her up on Catster… I think she is a beauty, but them I’m biased.. 🙂
I just visited Joshua’s page and let out a gasp when I saw the first picture. Such a regal and handsome poser! I like the part about his sleeping on your chest or lap. No wonder you love him so much. My first cat, Whiskers slept on my chest at night. I felt so comforted by her. She lived to 16 years 11 months and went over the Rainbow Bridge over two years ago. I still miss her even with Sylvester.
Well he extended a friendship paw to Huddy, but took it back. That wasn’t very nice.
That’s cuz his Dad, network engineer that he is, managed to press the wrong buttons more than once. Invite has now been accepted, and I apologize for any hurt feelings.
You know, when I finally pulled my feelings out of the backpack, they WERE hurt. 🙂
However, all is forgiven.
There is another Texan cat named Hudson, to whom I extended an invite. I thought I was modifying that one. I was truly mortified when I found out what I had done.
He is regal, and so handsome.
He IS isn’t he?
**Is Your Pet Stressed Out? Patch May Tell You**
Company Says Product Determines Stress Level
POSTED: 4:45 pm EDT April 29, 2007
TOKYO — Wondering if your dog or cat is stressed? Just stick a special patch on the bottom of its paw and you’ll be able to tell, according to a Japanese company.
The patch, developed by Japanese company Medical Life Care Giken, purports to measure the stress level of dogs and cats by detecting excessive sweat secretion — believed to be a sign of stress — the Nikkei Weekly reported Sunday.
The round, pin-sized patch is applied to the center pad of the animal’s paw and changes color depending on how sweaty the pet is, the Nikkei said.
The company, which makes a similar patch for humans, says it worked with researchers at Toyama University to study the sweat patterns of dogs and cats, which secrete sweat from their paws, the Nikkei said.
The company expects strong sales amid a pet boom in Japan, the Nikkei said. The patches are expected to go on sale in Japan later this year, with the price still undecided, it said. It did not mention plans for overseas sales.
Doting Japanese pet owners are known to go to great lengths for their pets’ well-being, taking cats and dogs to specialist masseurs and even acupuncturists.
Could this be a hoax? I thought cats and dogs didn’t sweat.
Happy Monday, TDKers! Such a cute kit today…. 🙂
I found this on internet. Dogs don’t have the luxury of overall cooling because their bodies have very few sweat glands, and most of those are in the footpads. Dogs cool themselves primarily by the process of panting and breathing, with the moist lining of their lungs serving as the evaporative surface.
Most people believe that the dog’s tongue contains sweat glands, but this is not true. The dog’s tongue and mouth are associated with many salivary glands that produce different forms of saliva. Some cooling takes place as the panting dog moves air across saliva-moistened surfaces of the mouth cavity.
Dogs also dissipate heat by dilating (expanding) blood vessels in the face and ears. Dilating blood vessels helps cool the dogs blood by causing it to flow closer to the surface of the skin.
Cats basically do the same thing.
That’s why I keep coming back here. I learn something new every day!
speaking of car thefts, someone broke into my car last week when it was parked in front of my house. They slim-jim-ed it to get in. They didn’t STEAL anything, just rifled through all my stuff. I had a lot of junk in there from helping my fiance move, and they threw a bunch of his stuff out on the lawn to get a look at it. The best thing is, I don’t have a light in my car because the bulb burned out and I have been too lazy to change it. So they weren’t able to see any of the stuff they could steal- like my unopened bank statment sitting on my seat. The police figure the thief was looking for ipods. It freaked me out for about a day or so.
Hope everyone’s monday is good. I’m supposed to be writing my final paper for my college career. I have 5 pages written, it’s supposed to be 15 and it’s due Wednesday. I feel like that little kid asking his mom to let him sleep “5 more minutes!”
I am glad nothing was taken. I just went and put the new fuse in my car so the light will work–thank you.
Good luck with your paper. The year is almost over, so just keep at it. It is all worth it in the end.
I, too, am glad nothing was taken. It’s a wake up call to be sure that if you keep your registration and insurance information in the glove box to be sure that is locked. When my car was broken into, that’s what the police told me to look for first… make sure that information was still there.
I don’t know how one would remember to take it in and out every time they park the car for the night ! My glove box does not lock… so I stay hopeful that nothing happens.
Go write your paper. We’ll see you back here on Thursday!
Such a cute little fuzzball. I hope everyone has a good monday!

***Climate change hits Mars***
Mars is being hit by rapid climate change and it is happening so fast that the red planet could lose its southern ice cap, writes Jonathan Leake.
Scientists from Nasa say that Mars has warmed by about 0.5C since the 1970s. This is similar to the warming experienced on Earth over approximately the same period.
Since there is no known life on Mars it suggests rapid changes in planetary climates could be natural phenomena.
The mechanism at work on Mars appears, however, to be different from that on Earth. One of the researchers, Lori Fenton, believes variations in radiation and temperature across the surface of the Red Planet are generating strong winds.
In a paper published in the journal Nature, she suggests that such winds can stir up giant dust storms, trapping heat and raising the planet’s temperature.
Fenton’s team unearthed heat maps of the Martian surface from Nasa’s Viking mission in the 1970s and compared them with maps gathered more than two decades later by Mars Global Surveyor. They found there had been widespread changes, with some areas becoming darker.
When a surface darkens it absorbs more heat, eventually radiating that heat back to warm the thin Martian atmosphere: lighter surfaces have the opposite effect. The temperature differences between the two are thought to be stirring up more winds, and dust, creating a cycle that is warming the planet.
Oh-oh Global Warming?????
😯
Fancy that. Global warming might actually be a natural cycle.
Of course, that doesn’t fit the agenda of the people who want to steal our money and imprison us all in an uber-socialist state, so I bet you’ll never hear this in the mainstream papers.
My favorite line of the whole thing:
“Since there is no known life on Mars it suggests rapid changes in planetary climates could be natural phenomena.”
COULD BE????

Q. When should you book a last-minute flight?
A. On Wednesday from midnight to 2 a.m. Airfares are updated about 250,000 times a day, says Peter Greenberg, travel editor for NBC’s Today show and author of The Travel Detective (Villard, $16, http://www.amazon.com). So how do you get the best last-minute deal? Most airlines start their sales on Friday afternoon and compete with one another all weekend. The competition stops on Monday — “but that’s not when you call,†says Greenberg. “You call at one minute after midnight on Tuesday, meaning Wednesday morning.†Why wait? “Because these days, when you book a fare on the phone, you have 24 hours in which to purchase the ticket. So by midnight Tuesday night, all those discount fares booked by people who didn’t purchase them come flooding back into the system, and for a brief period of time — between an hour and two hours — you can get those deals.†One more thing to remember: Make sure you’re calling the minute after midnight on Tuesday in the time zone of the airline’s base location, which you can find on its website, usually under “contact information.â€
Good information to have. I love getting good deals on a flight. Thank you.
This is great information. Have to go home this summer and have dreaded the prices.

GOLF MATCH?
Stevie Wonder and Tiger Woods are in a restaurant having dinner. Woods
turns to Wonder and says, “How’s the singing career going?”
Stevie Wonder replies, “Not too bad. How’s the golf?”
Woods replies, “Not too bad. I’ve had some problems with my swing, but
think I’ve got that going right now.”
Stevie says, “I always find that when my golf swing goes wrong, I need to
stop playing for a while and not think about it.
Then, the next time I play, it seems to be all right.”
Tiger says, “You play golf?”
Wonder says, “Oh, yes, I’ve been playing for years.”
Woods says, “But you’re blind! How can you play golf if you can’t see?”
Wonder replies, “I get my caddy to stand in the middle of the fairway and
call to me. I listen for the sound of his voice and play the ball toward
him. Then, when I get to where the ball lands, the caddy moves to the
green or farther down the fairway and I play the next shot till I get to
the green.
“But how do you putt?” asks Woods.
Well,” says Stevie, I get my caddy to lean down in front of the hole and
call to me with his head on the ground, and I just play the ball toward his
voice.”
Woods asks, “What’s your handicap?”
Stevie says, “Well, I’m a scratch golfer.”
Woods, incredulous, says to Stevie, “We’ve got to play a round sometime”
Wonder replies, “Well, people don’t take me seriously, so I only play for
money, and never play for less than $10,000 a hole.”
Woods thinks it over and says, “OK, I’m for that, when would you like to
play?”
Stevie says, “Pick a night.”
Good one!! I like it!! ha ha ha!

**70-Year-Old Marathoner Catches Alleged Shoplifter**
Woman Is Liquor Store Clerk
POSTED: 4:27 am PDT April 29, 2007
WOLFEBORO, N.H. — A shoplifter would have to run pretty far to get away from this liquor store clerk.
Judy Brenner, 70, ran the Boston Marathon this month.
On Thursday, she was working at a state liquor store in Wolfeboro when she thought a young customer was trying to lift some liquor.
Brenner followed the teen out of the store. She said she wasn’t going to let him get away with something he didn’t pay for. He was walking fast — so she picked up the pace. Finally, she sprinted about 100 feet to catch up with him.
She said she grabbed the half-gallon of whiskey he had under his jacket, while others who joined the chase grabbed the suspect and held him until police arrived.
Brenner finished the Boston Marathon in just over five hours, placing sixth among the women in her age bracket.
Go Judy GO!! I just love stories like this……

**Morticians Find Man Alive After Dublin Hospital Accidentally Declares Him Dead**
Thursday, April 26, 2007
DUBLIN, Ireland — A Dublin hospital apologized Thursday for telling a family their relative was dead, only to discover he was still alive when the morticians arrived.
The patient, identified only as a disabled man in his 30s, was checked in to the Mater Hospital in inner north Dublin during the Easter period, where staff certified his death. Morgue officials found him, apparently awake and alert, in his bed when they arrived hours later to collect the body.
The Mater — which suffers from chronic overcrowding and, in recent weeks, work stoppages by nurses demanding more pay for fewer working hours — said it had formed a committee to investigate what went wrong and to ensure it never happened again. It apologized for traumatizing the patient’s family, who checked him out of the Mater after the incident.
“Needless to say, the hospital is very perturbed at what happened,” the Mater said in a statement.
Screwups are nothing new for Ireland’s publicly funded hospitals. In August another north Dublin hospital, Beaumont, shipped the body of a dead English tourist back to England — with a bag of somebody else’s organs stitched up inside his body.
anyone have any good focusing tips? My paper on the Ba’th and Saddam Hussein isn’t really doing it for me today
Do you want to focus on the paper or on TDK (much easier to do!)?
I have 41 pages of recipes from here, thats a good long paper! 🙂

…or maybe Olive is distracting you too much. If I had a pretty black cat like that, I wouldn’t focus on Saddam either.
i just read about a man who got an award for filming the drowning of a kitten. the man admitted it was real, and that the kitten was “sick and scheduled to die anyway”. i was appalled. i have the link for the petition here, unfortunately its in another language and i cant find an english one… the video is linked in the petition. i couldnt watch it.

Hungarian police investigate kitten murder in film
Published: Sunday, 29 April, 2007, 08:29 AM Doha Time
BUDAPEST: Hungarian police are investigating a film director after an animal-protection charity reported him for drowning a kitten in a scene from a recent prize-winning film.
The Herman Otto Animal and Nature Defence Association reported Zoltan Toepler after he admitted that a kitten really died in the scene from his film Alszent (Hypocrite).
A statement by the association said the animal had been killed with the greatest possible suffering to achieve “the desired effectâ€, and called this a serious crime against society.
The association said that according to Hungarian law, animals could only be killed for acceptable reasons, such as incurable illnesses and academic research.
It also pointed out that animals could only be killed by drugs, as this caused the least suffering.
Toepler released a statement in response to hate mail, including death threats, he received after the complaint came to light.
The director said that while the animal had been killed, he had received the footage from an outside source.
“I didn’t drown the kitten, but when a colleague showed me the footage, I said this must go in the film,†he said. “When I asked where the footage came from, I was told that it was a sick animal incapable of living that was put down.â€
“I would judge those who torture feeling creatures, but not the cameraman who filmed it,†he continued.
The film, which Toepler made under the name Nicolaus Myslicki, won a special prize at the 2007 Hungarian Film Week for best experimental short.
Members of the film week jury said in statement on the event’s website that they would withdraw the award if it could be proven beyond a doubt that the animal was killed simply for the sake of the film. – DPA
Appalling how some cowards can hide cruelty in the guise of “art”! These individuals are inhuman hateful creatures. They should have their ‘award’ shoved up where the sun don’t shine!
BTW couldn’t bring myself to watch it…..

BTW, in poking aorund I found a long entry about htis film on a Hungarian Neo-Nazi site. It’s in Hungarian, so I can’t say for sure what they thought of it, but…it involves killing a kitten with maximum cruelty, so I think we can guess.
Why would anyone want to watch a cat being drowned anyway?
I was watching a moving called Winter Passing and there was a horrible scene where the actress Zooey Deschanel kisses and then puts a kitten who is FELV positive into a bag, and drops it into the water at a pier. I saw that and started swearing at the actress and the TV. I will never watch another of her movies which means I cannot watch The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxie anymore or any sequels. What a sick B—ch! OMG!
I almost hate to admit this. My first husband was a taxidermist and had a pet ferret. He got PO’d with the ferret and didn’t want it any more, and thought it could be used at the museum where he worked. He put that poor thing in a bag, started his car and held it to the tail pipe. This was while we were both young (high school)…. I walked away while he did this – it sickened me. And I never forgave him for that. However, like the idiot I was at the time, I still married him. Thank god one of us grew up.
I lost Sox 30 days ago to FeLV. I still have Basil and love his with all my heart. I will never advocate killing a cat in that manner, but there may come a time when euthinasia is the one gift a cat lover can give at the end. Sox’s blood was the a light brown and like water. He had no red blood cells. I sat with him for 30 plus hours praying for him, and then I realized he was having difficulty breathing. His tempurature was over 3 degrees below normal, and he was in horrid pain. I was with him when my vet put him down. I held him whispering how sorry I was to kill him. I know what you are saying, and I really understand, but I can not condemn anyone who chooses to put down a cat with this virus. Drowning a cat seems so cruel when there are so many vets and humane societies that will help, but I can’t condemn when I did something similiar. I couldn’t bare to see him suffer and die so slowly. I would give anything to have him with me now. He is at the Rainbow Bridge with a million other felines, to include his family. To watch a cat with this virus is horrid. Basil made it through his first crisis last week–and I maybe faced with a similiar situation and I will have to choose whether to put him down. It is excrutiatingly painful.
It is an awful experience to sent a furry friend over the bridge. Somehow they let us know that the time has come. They depend on us and need our help when that time comes. It is the most loving, unselfish thing a pet guardian can do. Sox’s Mom–you deserve a special place in heaven for taking cats with this disease into your heart and home.
I signed.
*sigh* So many horrible things are done in the name of ‘art’, ‘freedom’ etc.

“The heartbreak happens all too often ? a pet owner is unable to
afford treatment and their sick or injured companion animal pays the
price. If the owner is elderly, disabled or on a fixed income, the
cost of care may be too much of a stretch for their pocketbook.
Perhaps they have been victimized by crime, property loss or a job
layoff and are experiencing a temporary financial hardship ? making it
too difficult to afford pet care. And some animals, brought to clinics
by Good Samaritans, don’t have an owner to pay for treatment. Whatever
the situation, the fact remains the same: When sick or injured animals
are unable to receive veterinary care, they suffer. Through the AAHA

OMG the lack of ears is killing me! i love them when they are this little! *kisses to the sweet fluffy baby*
Gimme gimme! He’s ADORABLE! Tiny baby .. Love the little tongue! 🙂
what a way to start my vacation, no sneaking tdk in at work! He’s unbelievably adorable. Kittenmaster, how is it possible they get cuter with every post?
Digger is gorgeous. I never saw a cat like this one. He is just so cute & fluffy. You better take good care of this one. He is too precious for anything to happen to him. Lots of luck with Digger.
what a cute kitten love grays.
It is a tearjerker.

sad sad sad
Hope they’re all home soon.
Ugh….I won’t elaborate but I have 2 nephews and a neice who are still there. I love the 3 of them so very much. I pray for them every day. This was indeed a tearjerker.
I will pray for their safe return. My husband has done it a too many times–we think that his return this February will mark the end. He is ready to retire. It has been a toll, but it is also who he is and I knew it the day we married all those years ago. Seems to be something in them–pride in their country and strong in their convictions. They are all my heros. Even if your politics is against what they may do–they are there giving the right for protests and freedom of speech. I love them all and treasure them. Military Spouse and Proud of It!
It’s so very hard.
My dad was in the Korean and Vietnam war. My brother went to Vietnam.
My crazy nephew went to the Middle East back during Desert Storm, he never came back the same. Which was kinda scary because he was kinda strange when he went. He’s pretty cool now though. He’s in Lousiana and he has a nice pig farm to keep him company. I’m not kidding.
All these years later I have my niece and nephews over there and it’s hard.
I don’t condone anything about this war, but I support the troops everyday. If there places to donate, I do it. If there’s troops coming home, I go to the airport and almost always greet them when they come back. I never thought I would do anything like that – I helped my older brother burn his draft card when I was a kid. Serioiusly.
Well said, Huddy’s Mama.
that was soo sad,how can we let them know we care even if we aren’t family? Also wasn’t there a child we were supposed to send a birthday e-card to this month? Can someone repost the address.
On a lighter note, here’s a U-tube video of Nora the cat playing a piano!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0zgQAp7EYw
Nora does indeed rock!
This was so cool!
Gotta run. Good night. Check you out in the morning.

Charlie is the most adorable kitten I’ve seen in a along time….soooooooo sweet and snugglable.
******PLEASE READ THIS!!!!!!******
I saw red when I read this. (Puns not intended.) We need to demand that Chinese grains are not used EVER for anything in our country. I bet this is what killed my cat Smokey several years ago.
Filler in Animal Feed Is Open Secret in China
ZHANGQIU, China, April 28 — As American food safety regulators head to China to investigate how a chemical made from coal found its way into pet food that killed dogs and cats in the United States, workers in this heavily polluted northern city openly admit that the substance is routinely added to animal feed as a fake protein.
The Shandong Mingshui Great Chemical Company makes a chemical called melamine and sometimes sells melamine scrap to other producers who use it to make animal feed.
For years, producers of animal feed all over China have secretly supplemented their feed with the substance, called melamine, a cheap additive that looks like protein in tests, even though it does not provide any nutritional benefits, according to melamine scrap traders and agricultural workers here.
“Many companies buy melamine scrap to make animal feed, such as fish feed,†said Ji Denghui, general manager of the Fujian Sanming Dinghui Chemical Company, which sells melamine. “I don’t know if there’s a regulation on it. Probably not. No law or regulation says ‘don’t do it,’ so everyone’s doing it. The laws in China are like that, aren’t they? If there’s no accident, there won’t be any regulation.â€
Melamine is at the center of a recall of 60 million packages of pet food, after the chemical was found in wheat gluten linked this month to the deaths of at least 16 pets in the United States.
No one knows exactly how melamine (which is not believed to be particularly toxic) became so fatal in pet food, but its presence in any form of American food is illegal.
The link to China has set off concerns among critics of the Food and Drug Administration that ingredients in pet food as well as human food, which are increasingly coming from abroad, are not being adequately screened.
“They have fewer people inspecting product at the ports than ever before,†says Caroline Smith DeWaal, the director of food safety for the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington. “Until China gets programs in place to verify the safety of their products, they need to be inspected by U.S. inspectors. This open-door policy on food ingredients is an open invitation for an attack on the food supply, either intentional or unintentional.â€
Now, with evidence mounting that the tainted wheat gluten came from China, American regulators have been granted permission to visit the region to conduct inspections of food treatment facilities.
The Food and Drug Administration has already banned imports of wheat gluten from China after it received more than 14,000 reports of pets believed to have been sickened by packaged food. And last week, the agency opened a criminal investigation in the case and searched the offices of at least one pet food supplier.
The Department of Agriculture has also stepped in. On Thursday, the agency ordered more than 6,000 hogs to be quarantined or slaughtered after some of the pet food ingredients laced with melamine were accidentally sent to hog farms in eight states, including California.
Scientists are now trying to determine whether melamine could be harmful to humans.
The pet food case is also putting China’s agricultural exports under greater scrutiny because the country has had a terrible food safety record.
In recent years, for instance, China’s food safety scandals have involved everything from fake baby milk formulas and soy sauce made from human hair to instances where cuttlefish were soaked in calligraphy ink to improve their color and eels were fed contraceptive pills to make them grow long and slim.
For its part, Chinese officials dispute any suggestion that melamine from the country could have killed pets. But regulators here on Friday banned the use of melamine in vegetable proteins made for export or for use in domestic food supplies.
Yet what is clear from visiting this region of northeast China is that for years melamine has been quietly mixed into Chinese animal feed and then sold to unsuspecting farmers as protein-rich pig, poultry and fish feed.
Many animal feed operators here advertise on the Internet, seeking to purchase melamine scrap. The Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Company, one of the companies that American regulators named as having shipped melamine-tainted wheat gluten to the United States, had posted such a notice on the Internet last March.
Here at the Shandong Mingshui Great Chemical Group factory, huge boiler vats are turning coal into melamine, which is then used to create plastics and fertilizer.
But the leftover melamine scrap, golf ball-size chunks of white rock, is sometimes being sold to local agricultural entrepreneurs, who say they mix a powdered form of the scrap into animal feed to deceive those who raise animals into thinking they are buying feed that is high in protein.

Times Topics: Pet Food Recall
“It just saves money if you add melamine scrap,†said the manager of an animal feed factory here.
Last Friday here in Zhangqiu, a fast-growing industrial city southeast of Beijing, two animal feed producers explained in great detail how they purchase low-grade wheat, corn, soybean or other proteins and then mix in small portions of nitrogen-rich melamine scrap, whose chemical properties help the feed register an inflated protein level.
Melamine is the new scam of choice, they say, because urea — another nitrogen-rich chemical — is illegal for use in pig and poultry feed and can be easily detected in China as well as in the United States.
“People use melamine scrap to boost nitrogen levels for the tests,†said the manager of the animal feed factory. “If you add it in small quantities, it won’t hurt the animals.â€
The manager, who works at a small animal feed operation here that consists of a handful of storage and mixing areas, said he has mixed melamine scrap into animal feed for years.
He said he was not currently using melamine. But he then pulled out a plastic bag containing what he said was melamine powder and said he could dye it any color to match the right feed stock.
He said that melamine used in pet food would probably not be harmful. “Pets are not like pigs or chickens,†he said casually, explaining that they can afford to eat less protein. “They don’t need to grow fast.â€
The resulting melamine-tainted feed would be weak in protein, he acknowledged, which means the feed is less nutritious.
But, by using the melamine additive, the feed seller makes a heftier profit because melamine scrap is much cheaper than soy, wheat or corn protein.
“It’s true you can make a lot more profit by putting melamine in,†said another animal feed seller here in Zhangqiu. “Melamine will cost you about $1.20 for each protein count per ton whereas real protein costs you about $6, so you can see the difference.â€
Feed producers who use melamine here say the tainted feed is often shipped to feed mills in the Yangtze River Delta, near Shanghai, or down to Guangdong Province, near Hong Kong. They also said they knew that some melamine-laced feed had been exported to other parts of Asia, including South Korea, North Korea, Indonesia and Thailand.
Evidence is mounting that Chinese protein exports have been tainted with melamine and that its use in agricultural regions like this one is widespread. But the government has issued no recall of any food or feed product here in China.
Indeed, few people outside the agriculture business know about the use of melamine scrap. The Chinese news media — which is strictly censored — has not reported much about the country’s ties to the pet food recall in the United States. And few in agriculture here do not see any harm in using melamine in small doses; they simply see it as cheating a little on protein, not harming animals or pets.
As for the sale of melamine scrap, it is increasingly popular as a fake ingredient in feed, traders and workers here say.
At the Hebei Haixing Insect Net Factory in nearby Hebei Province, which makes animal feed, a manager named Guo Qingyin said: “In the past melamine scrap was free, but the price has been going up in the past few years. Consumption of melamine scrap is probably bigger than that of urea in the animal feed industry now.â€
And so melamine producers like the ones here in Zhangqiu are busy.
A man named Jing, who works in the sales department at the Shandong Mingshui Great Chemical Group factory here, said on Friday that prices have been rising, but he said that he had no idea how the company’s melamine scrap is used.
“We have an auction for melamine scrap every three months,†he said. “I haven’t heard of it being added to animal feed. It’s not for animal feed.â€
*thinking*
Hmmmmm……..I think I’ll just start feeding people to my cats.
That’s not banned is it?
*giggles and runs away*
Not if it’s Soylent Green. 🙂
I really really hope that Chinese are the only ones who does that – but what are the odds?
Maybe I start raising chickens and pigs on my balcony. 🙁
