I work at my local humane society and just took home my very first foster kitten. I’m pretty new to working in a shelter and brand new to kitten fostering so naturally I’m worrying about everything. This kitten about 6 weeks old (found as a stray by herself) and has a very round, wormy belly. We gave her strongid, as we do with all cats and kittens on intake. We also gave her a bit of droncit. It’s been about 6 hours since she got those and she’s eaten some wet food but hasn’t pooped yet. And she walks like her belly is so uncomfortable for her, and I feel so bad for her. Is there anything else I can do for her or do I just have to wait it out until the dewormers do their job and she gets rid of them? (I can talk to my CVT coworkers in a couple days if I still have concerns but wanted some fast advice for now).
Also she’s pretty shy and hissy so far, and I know a bit about socialing kittens but if anyone has any good links about that, I’d love to have them.
    Thanks!

    Welcome Matt,

TDKland is the furriest feline site around!

Thanks for taking on the responsibility of fostering kittens/cats. If it weren’t for people like you many wouldn’t survive. Droncit works almost immediately to kill intestinal worms. Now it’s a waiting game on when she’s poops. The worms’ lifecycle is about 14 days so she will be expelling them for that long. Re-treatment is very important! You can call a clinic that open 24/7 for a general estimate when she should have her first poop.

Although the shelter classifies her as stray it’s best to approach her as having feral behavior.

I see that one drug kills roundworms with a retreatment in about 3 weeks to kill any that hatched that were still eggs on the first go round. Then the second drug is for tapeworms. If she has a large worm burden it may take a while to get rid of all of these at one time. Just watch her closely and especially when she is using the litterbox.
The socializing just takes time and patience, no sudden moves, loud noises, etc. She will get used to the sounds of a house; washer/dryer, dishwasher, the tv and become used to them and not jump everytime she hears and sees something new. Pick her up a lot and snuggle her so she gets used to your scent, and when you leave the house, leave a t shirt or something that is soaked in your scent for her to snuggle with until you return.
