Note: there are some swear words in the comments, but also some clever discussion of how cats “talk”.

I’ve had cats who could speak a bit of human, and would use the words in an appropriate situation.

The most talkative one was very chatty from his youth, possibly having learned some from an older lady cat who died when he was six months old. He would say “No!” in a very definite tone when I was doing something he didn’t like, and “Hello” (e’oh) when he entered a room and saw me, or when I came into a room where he was.

When he was eleven we were joined by a young lad who was silent (apart from a HUGE purr) for his first three years. However as the older cat aged, he talked less and the younger one began to talk, and now that he’s an only one he is more vocal than he used to be, although – perhaps because he was a late starter! – his voice is still kittenish, even at seven years of age.

Oh, I do try sometimes to speak their language, but I suspect my teeth are the wrong shape!
