We just adopted our first kitten at 3 months old. He was a street cat that had been taken and vaccinated. We were keeping him in the bathroom (without windows). There was an unfortunate incident where he escaped from there and found an open window in the house. Miraculously, someone found him later the same day and took him in and we were able to connect with the person. I brought him home last night after he has been on the street for several hours and then spent the night and a day with the kind people who picked him up. They said he looked very confused and desperate. They aren’t even cat people and felt compelled to help the little guy. Brought him home and gave him a bath. He really smelled-maybe had been in the trash? He seemed traumatized and subdued but purring and happy to be back. Spent the night on my lap and he looked fine when I left this morning. Today I came home and he was lying dead in his bed. I am so sad. I became attached to him so quickly and I miss him so much.

I would like to know the possible causes of death are. I don’t think it is likely that it was something in the house. Could he have gotten something in the street? Could it be stress? My husband bathed him again today which I don’t know in retrospect was a good idea. Could that have had anything to do with it? One of the ways I knew he was dead is he was still wet when he had been bathed hours ago because of the lack of body heat. Really grateful for any ideas and comfort. I feel so terrible this happened to him. He was such a loving cat. Thank you to this wonderful community.

Jessica, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your sweet baby. Please know that it was nothing that you did or didn’t do. Giving him a bath would not result in his death. It could have been that he had been hit or an animal (maybe a dog or raccoon) might have shaken him or caused internal damage. You want answers, but unfortunately there aren’t any. Just remember that because of you, in his short life he knew what it was like to be loved, have a full tummy, have a warm and comfy bed and surrounded by people who cared for him.

Thank you so much for your replies and comfort.

I miss him so much. It’s awful to think his life was so short. I can’t stop thinking about the what-ifs. His death is hard for me to accept. I can only hope he is in a better place and that gives me some comfort. He was my first kitten and I loved him so much. He was so sweet and loving when I really needed it in my life.

He had your love and care while he was here. That he carries with him and is watching over you furever.

Sometimes, unfortunately, the little lives we are entrusted with do not survive.

We do what we can, we offer every love and comfort, and in the end… it makes no change to their fate. Take comfort in knowing that, while he was in your care, he was safe and happy to be with you.
