Anyone got any ideas why Pooky might have started to take sudden notions to attack my hands and leap at my face and bite it? She persists even if I offer her another toy. It’s not even like I’m ignoring when she does it. It’s kinda sore. If I try the hissing thing, she just stops for a second then launches back in. I’ve just had to shut her out the room because she was latched on to my hand with her teeth and bit my face twice :0(

Have you, by any chance, recently changed what soap you wash your face and hands with?

No….can’t think of anything that’s changed – the soap and washing powder we use tends to vary. She has cardboard boxes and toys to chew on, so not sure why she insists on using me. She doesn’t do it to my partner.

That is a puzzle. Only thing I can think of is to get stricter with her when she does it. Not only hiss at her like a momma cat would but also scruff her, just like a momma cat would, then put her down on the floor and refuse to play with her or give her attention for a little while. Hopefully she will get the idea that when she tries that she only gets disciplined and temporarily shunned.

Yeah, I try plonking her on the floor, but she leaps back up. It only ever lasts a few minutes..then she calms down and goes to sleep usually. Almost like a fractious toddler who’s tired but keeps playing and ends up taking it too far. Shutting her out the room for a bit seems to work….

I’ve forgotten, how old is she?

LOL Yeah, well, my Frisky is 11 years old and still tries to do hard love nips on me at least once a day. I have to firmly tell him NO BITING and sometimes just dump him out of my lap to make the point. So I do sympathize with your predicament. At least Frisky doesn’t bite my face!

I think she forgets I’m not a cat when she does that. She also sometimes climbs on my head and chews my hair. Weirdo.

She’s curled up on her blanky now, so all is well…..until next time! ;0)

My Charger also thinks I’m a human chew toy but it’s mostly my fault because I ignored the various advice available on the net on how to prevent the very thing. When he started teething a few weeks old and started nibbling my fingers, I found it too cute to stop him or punish him. Now he’s 5 months old and ambushes my hands and chews away daily. Hurts even more when coupled with the bunny kick. He bites my chin and lip too if I get too close to him while he’s in a hand biting frenzy but it’s as if he knows not to bite my face too hard like he does with my hands.

I bought him a dangly toy attached to the end of a pole and that seems to distract him more often than not now but at times when I cannot find it, my hands are the chew toy of choice.

All part of being owned by cats I guess 😀

I was always careful not to let her play with my hands for that reason….but cats are cats, i.e. awfully contrary wee beasties :0)

She does have a feather wand, but when she gets in the “mum’s a chew toy” mode, she just ain’t interested in anything else! Wee daftie.

This is exactly the topic I could use some help with too! It was kind of nice to read your comment Pookster. My Jamie does this same thing…every night when I try to get into bed. It doesn’t seem to help playing with him before bed. It just gets him more riled up. I have been trying to give him a small handful of crunchies to distract him while I climb in. But he still jumps up on the bed and gets all crazy…attacking my hands and launching himself at anything that moves on the bed. He has that wild look in his eyes that makes me a bit worried. He is exactly the same age, 7 months and was neutered last month..I thought it would help, but hasn’t. I have a lovely scratch on my nose from a few nights ago and some new ones on my arm from last night. Anyone have advice?

Pooks used to be terrible for it when I went to bed, would try to eat my books and leap at anything that moved. Now she’s ok cos she’s discovered she can get up on the wardrobe on her own and can sit and survey her domain. I ended up taking a dangly toy to bed so I could distract her with one hand and read with the other! She was always ok once the light went out though.

She has been ok the past couple of days, just a slight hand mauling before lunchtime today, but I think she was peckish. She has days when she’s still very kittenish and mad and others where she’s much more sensible and cat-like.

Has Jamie always done this? Perhaps this is an age where they’re just moving from kitten to cat?? I ended up with a nice scratch just under my eyebrow last week from her leaping at my face when I lay down on the sofa. Eejit kitty.

I read a few of the advice links and I think it may just be predatory aggression. He has always been a bit bitey/scratchy/gnarly. It is hard to know when he’s gonna get the wild hair up his butt though. When we sleep he is the most snuggly, sweet, loving baby. But there are certain times like when I am walking around the house or trying to go to bed that he just starts the launch attacking. His tail swishes and he has that zoned in look…I say NO! I have stopped pointing because he just attacks my hand when I do that. I try to put my hands behind my back. On the bed he is so close to my face I worry. But man, does he go for my hands…like when I try to pull the covers up and stuff. I fling him off the bed and he comes right back a few times before finding something less volatile to attack…eejit kitteh is right!

I guess maybe he will calm down a bit as he matures more…I still walk through doors sometimes to be greeted by a vertical “BANZAI” ninja kitteh at thigh height. That’s just funny though, she doesn’t have claws out or anything, or actually latch on. More just an invitation to play, I think. She’s a wee daftie.
