took in a stray end of June. come to find she was pregnant! she had a weird pregnancy the whole way. plus she was young maybe 9-11 months old had 2 false labors before she gave birth on august 11th to 2 kittens and a stillborn. today the 2 kittens died. 16 days old and never even opened their eyes. I’ve heard rumors that the cats previous owners put her out because she got pregnant by her brother. the kittens also had fleas and i couldn’t (no matter how hard i tried) keep them down to a minimum. poor babies. did i mention i have 3 9 week old kittens who were orphaned and rescued from 3 weeks old 2 pit bulls (and carpets- thats why it was hard to get the flea population down once they got to high) what do you think is the highest possibility of them dying? the fact that she was to young? that she would feed my grown kittens who aren’t hers before her own, the fleas, or the rumor that she was impregnated by her brother?

if they never opened their eyes they may have been premature, in which case it’s not surprising they passed but it could also be the fleas, or any other number of things. They’re so fragile when they’re that small 🙁

Most likely they were premature. Stress on the mother, she wasnt caring for them properly. I can tell you that inbreeding does not necessarily factor sick cats. If there wasnt inbreeding in her line prior, she was impregnated by her brother, that doesnt mean the kittens would be affected physically. Seen it first hand, mother and father were sister and brother. She had 6 kittens. One faded at 2 months, although they were outdoors so it is possible that kitty ate something poisonous. The other 5 were healthy and vibrant. Still alive in fact to this day. We dont have fleas this far north, at least I have only seen one case of them and I was a young child at the time- so I have no idea if that factors in. If she was feeding the others she may have already known the writing on the wall. Some queens will abort kittens if stress levels are high and she feels she does not have a safe place to have them.

It sounds like either they were premature, she was too young to be pregnant or she has some kind of disease that can be transmitted to the babies – I would have her tested as soon as possible if she is going to be around any of your other cats.

Also have her spayed, there are enough kittens to go around and she doesn’t need the repeated stress.

Kittens are spectacularly fragile and need to be isolated in a dark, quiet place and and rarely handled in order to thrive. If they have a mom, and do not need to be hand fed, their best chance for survival is to be left entirely alone. But kittens are so adorable and tempting, this is hard to do. I’ve seen many feral litters thrive because they were well hidden by a protective mom and not brought out until 8-10 weeks.

Your poor girl had too many strikes for a healthy pregnancy. You provided her with shelter and food and safety but it was too late for her babies. The stress of living in a home with other intact cats ensured she would get pregnant when she needed her nourishment for her own growth. Then to be “tossed out” to fend for herself for incest (something that is no sin in non-human species). Since she had a home until then she had no proper training for feral survival she could not properly feed herself much less maintain a pregnancy and support countless parasites (fleas, etc). Then she still had to adjust to you after her rescue. It was stress pure and simple.

It is sad the little ones did not make it, but do not dwell on what could not be helped.

Enjoy your girl and focus on making her life happy and she will repay you beyond measure.

have actually found the owners, they are not good with pets, in the past year they have had 3 pitbulls that i know of and 2 cats and they claim she was “being annoying” because she kept meowing and being needy. im guessing she was in heat. they also put their male out at the same time (more on him later). this guy is actually my ex boyfriend and his girlfriend and 2 kids when they get tired of a pet they put it out or give it away. these people do not deserve to own pets! EVER! let alone kids. they claim the male is her brother but he looks way older than her (at least a year and a half) their names were “prince” and “princess”i remember the day i 1st noticed these two cats, i caught the male 1st and renamed him linx because thats exactly what he looks like. my husband and i made an appt to get him fixed, because we had a 7 week pregnant cat at the time (they didnt get along) it wasnt til a week later that i caught “princess” who i renamed icis and she didnt look pregnant but she musta JUST got pregnant within a week or 2 (so prince COULD be the daddy but its likely another cat may be) a week later scamper my other cat had her 4 kittens in my bedroom happy and healthy (9 weeks old now) after linx got fixed i put him back outside. so i had her for 7 weeks before she had her kittens.
