I’ve been looking to adopt kittens for what seems to be forever, and I have checked all the rescues and shelters in and around my area and nothing! The North Shore Animal League had a petathon over the weekend, and when I arrived on Sunday, late morning, they had only two kittens. I thought it was supposed to be kitten season. Any ideas?

Wow, still looking? I was thinking about you just recently, wondering if you found your kitten, or your kitten found you. Have you tried Petfinder? Can you make a trek to north Jersey? If so, I will check the shelters around here for you.

Oh, I just looked, you are out on Long Island. If you do decide to come this way, please let me know.

Aw, thanks! That’s so nice of you. I have been checking Petfinder, but it seems a lot of the posts are outdated and they no longer have the kittens. NJ is a little too far for me to travel.

I totally understand; where you are might be a bit far for me to travel! If we absolutely have to, however, maybe some kind of transport can be arranged. It’s just amazing that there are no kittens by you.

Best of luck – I know there is a kitten looking for you!

Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Brooklyn has a lot of kittens this time of year. Great org, worth the drive from L.I.

The kittens you saw were not the ones for you? Not the right connection?

Try Craiglist. Many shelters and rescue group post there and they are more up to date than Petfinder. If you are willing to take a young kitten, many rescue groups need people to foster kittens under 3 months of age (age at which they can be spayed/neutered and adopted). Singletons, pairs and litters. Usually how it works is you find the owners so if you want to adopt them you get first dibs! It’s really not that hard, once they get past 4 or 5 weeks and the organization pays for the vet care.

Animal Control in Philadelphia just posted an ad on Craiglist declaring that they are overrun with kittens!

Thanks, Joan! Pucca, they were two males, and I want at least one female. Ladysky, isn’t that something how they are overrun in Philly and nothing on Long Island, even at the peak of a petathon in the largest shelter out here. I would have loved to have two of those in the pictures, especially the tabby and white!

Wish you were in west texas. Our humane society just pulled tons of kittens out of a kill shelter and are looking for fosters so they can go back and get some pregnant mamas. (I’m so tempted to foster.)

I’ve noticed that kittens never make it onto petfinder in my area. They are adopted so easily that the rescue organizations don’t have to advertise them. So, you may already be doing this, but calling or visiting might help you find the kittens. Also, the suggestion of Craigslist is good…we have tons there now too, many rescued by good hearted folks who are trying to find them a home. Maybe the season arrives later up north?

Thanks, ECBROWN. I’ve been checking everywhere and on Craigslist, but you may be right that the season is starting late here. I’m glad, though, for the kittens that are being adopted. That’s always good news! I just hope my chance will come soon.

Finally! I adpoted two kittens today, a tabby and white and a black and white, 14 week old sisters. They’re just adorable, and I’m so happy to have found them. Thank you for all your support while I was looking.

Thanks so much everybody! I’m having tons of fun with Winnie and Mittens. I’m charging up the batteries to my digital camera so I can get some pictures up on here and Facebook. I waited a long time, but I guess the good that came out of the frustration of waiting and waiting was that it gave me time to decide, with the help of the members of TDK, to take two instead of one! They are crazy funny and cute, and I’m so glad I kept two siblings together. Happy Mothers’ Day to all!
