    Hey,

I have a mama cat and four kittens. The kittens will be seven weeks old this Saturday. They’re mostly eating dry food, but I think they may be nursing a little too. From what I read, it’s all right to have the mother cat spayed now. I know for a fact that they’ll be all right without her while she’s being spayed and recovering (they’ve been separated from her for short periods of time, and they’re learning to look up to me as well as her; besides, they’re not as anxious when they’re separated from her together). Is it okay to spay her?

We aren’t in too much of a rush, because she’s contained in a large cave/cage area. She can see other animals (mostly two frolicking lambs and some barn cats), but she can’t get out.

And when is the earliest that I can have the kittens fixed? From what I’ve heard, you’re supposed to wait until they’re “eight weeks and at least two pounds.” Is that right, or is it safe to neuter earlier if they’re already two pounds? Three of them are girls, but one is a boy, and we don’t want to risk anything by waiting too long.

Yes, it would be soon enough to have the mama fixed, as sometimes females come into heat very quickly after they have backed off nursing the kittens. I would move quickly on her.. 🙂 I would ask the vet about the kittens since a lot of places vary on when they like to spay and neuter. Some say 2 pounds; and it used to be after their first heat…I don’t think they say that anymore! I don’t think many vets neuter under 8 weeks as most have just been weaned or can be safely–also in shelters they like them to be fixed before they are adopted out to prevent unwanted behavior such as spraying. It just depends on your vet I think.
