i am still confused as to what is the best age to neuter a kitten. our local shelter will neuter at 2lbs because they want to get the kitty available for adoption asap but if there wasn’t that pressure, what is the optimum age? i have read so many differing points of view as to whether there are long-term consequences to early neutering.

The standard age is between 8-10 weeks and 2+ lbs. The important measurement is the weight. Also, neutering is less invasive than spaying so they recover more quickly.

Kits, male and female, are sexually active as soon so as 4 months. It’s important to have them fixed before that time. Also, it doesn’t do the female any favors to go into heat “once.’
