Im wondering, Should I leave out dry food every day for my kitten or should I feed it canned twice a day? which is more convenient and healthy?

How old is your kitty Dragonlover22?(cool name). I usually leave kitten chow out for kitty to snack on while I’m gone but feed them wet just once a day. Quality dry food is complete in and of itself but some kitties insist on some wet food. Once you start the wet food however, not many will let you stop.

    Good luck with your baby.

My crazy cats refuse to eat canned food. They won’t even eat tuna! As long as they have water available all the time a dry food diet is fine. (Now I’m having flashbacks to Jerrie, who would literally crawl up me to get at the tuna. The boy really loved tuna – and fresh flowers, unfortunately.)

I feed primarily dry food to my kitties and fosters. However, I also feed wet food once a day, or once every other day. I do this because one of my cats seems to be healthier if I feed him some wet food, and mix in some brewer’s yeast and lysine. Wet food is also the sure way I can get some cats to take things like worming medication, or antibiotics.

The most economical can for so many cats is 15 or 16 oz, and I’ve found two varieties of Sophisticat which have no wheat, corn, or rice gluten added (Salmon and Ocean Whitefish). Started trying to avoid the gluten after the China sourcing problems.

So I crack open a can of Sophisticat, add a little warm water, mix it up thoroughly; then add a heaping tablespoon of brewer’s yeast, and grind up a 250 mg lysine tablet. This all gets mixed up together, and spooned out onto two separate plates.

One plate goes to Pretty Girl and her 5 kittens, and the other plate is shared among 5 cats. (I must note that the sixth of my cats appears to be addicted to dry food. She absolutely refuses to eat wet food of any kind.)

My cat 120 refuses to eat wet food–he only likes dry. He looks puzzled when the other cats come running when I open the cans in the evening!

Oh and by the way how much dry food should I feed my kitten if i’m leaving out dry and feeding wet once a day?? Also do I feed the amount it says on the can for the wet food??

Ppearson, I get Sophisticat at my nearby PetsMart. The cans I mention are 51 cents each, where I’m at.

Dragonlover22, it depends on the dry food, and the wet food. If you’re feeding a high-quality dry food (such as Science Diet, Iams, Nutro, Blue Diamond, etc.), I’d get out a measuring cup and feed the smaller amount recommended. It’s usually something like 1/4 (level) cup, twice per day. You will be amazed at how little food that is!!

Regarding wet food, well, those instructions are written as though you’re going to feed your kitty nothing but wet food, when in reality it’s going to be a relatively small percentage of the daily diet/calories. For wet food, I’d feed no more than 1/2 what the manufacturer recommends, once per day.

Dragonlover22, I free feed mine a high quality dry food. Then they get meowmix bowls (wet food) once a day. I used to have one cat that would never eat wet food. I took her to my mom’s house one christmas and she disapeared when it was time to leave and has stayed at my mom’s ever since.

Tiger won’t eat wet at all and Bog only likes ‘una!

I have dry food out all the time for my two along with lots of water. In the evening, I feed a teaspoon (approximately) of the Meow Mix select little bowls to Smudge and 2 teaspoons (approximately) to Chance. Chance is a big eater and more active being younger, so I always let him finish any that Smudge hasn’t eaten if she walks away before eating it all. If she’s still eating, though, I have to make sure he doesn’t bother her until she’s done. (That’s a challenge since he always eats his fast and she eats hers slowly and daintily.)
