My kitties fight feline herpes and take lysine, Judith. If I had a kitten with weepy eyes (a classic sign of feline herpes) I’d try 500 mg twice per day. When you buy human lysine capsules, there is a preservative you want to watch out for…maybe buttons would know what it is…I want to say propo something glycol, but not sure since mine take a supplement for felines. If the lysine helps, that is a good sign that feline herpes is causing the problem. Lysine makes conditions unfavorable for the herpes virus to reproduce. It will only help with conditions that have feline herpies as an underlying cause (per our vet) and has a reputation for boosting immunity since so many cat colds, eye problems, and occasionally gum problems are caused by the herpes virus. But it is not actually boosting the immune system, just making it difficult for the virus to reproduce.

Leela looks forward to her treats every night and I slip lysine treats on with them. She used to ear them like a champ, uny I bought a bunch of packets of them. They are chews, fish shaped, and a bit big, do I break them into smaller pieces. She still spits them out sometimes, but I can usually get a dose I’m her. Comet is not a treat guy, not even food motivated, so he won’t est them. And though I was hopeful Mac would get into them, as he did initially, he too, refuses them now.
Leela also gets weepy eyes. I got a pack of wipes that do the truck when they look like they bother her.

Oh Red is fine, when they pulled his teeth the Vet Chris said he would more than likely never eat crunchy food again….oh she did not know Red, he was eating crunchy food within 4 days and hasn’t stopped πŸ™‚ He will not, repeat not eat soft treats at all but loves his soft food (1/2 tsp day and night) daily πŸ™‚

Morning ECB, Joan, and AV πŸ™‚

Deb, as Red gets older, you may want to add water and let the crunchies soak for a bit before you give them to him …. it makes them soft, but still that taste they crave …. I had to do this for Cuddles in her last years, and it really helped, as I think her old teeth were loose and sore ( I didn’t have the heart, and the vet agreed it wasn’t absolutely necessary, to put her through removal surgery)

… well, I’ve played around in bed enough for this morning, time for me to get up and going …… later all!

Hey Judith … ECB is pretty accurate about the L-lysine dose age .. I always use the human
L-lysine supplement I find buying the capsules when the L-lysine is a loose powder is always the safest bet. They are lots of liquid vitamin capsules but these are the ones to avoid they contain a chemical that is toxic to cats I’ll have to look up the name again it’s not coming to mind.

With any slight swelling or increased in discharge or squinting I will always give 500mg twice daily.. MS Moneypennys eye is so bad at the moment even the 500mg twice daily isn’t really touching the problem .. She has stopped sneezing and there’s not a lot of discharge but the swelling is pretty bad I’m worried we might have gotten to it to late ..

Thank you everyone for the help. I will try the dose you suggest Buttons and will buy the capsules and pull them apart to put the powder on Dru’s food. We will see. I have no reason to believe Dru has feline herpes- apart from the occasional eye issues she is fine -but she has not been tested and she is rather sensitive (gets ill easily). I try eye-wipes but someone acts like I am trying to kill her little self.
I hope MS MoneyPenny’s eye starts to get better really soon- she is so fortunate to have found someone who knows how to care for her so well.
My Louis-cat seems to manage all kinds of food with his old teeth. He did go off dry food for a time but now has a mixture of wet and dry, which seems to suit him just fine. He is an outdoor boy but I am trying to tempt him in for the winter. Dru is all fan girl round him but he clearly thinks she’s a bit daft.

I am trying to crochet but every time I pick up the wool I get pounced on. It is doing my creativity no good at all…….

The occasional eye issues are all you’ll often see of feline herpes, Judith. For many cats they get it from their mom and it is no big deal, especially if they get the lysine. My vet didn’t recommend doing any official test. Just said if lysine helps, then you are dealing with feline herpes. It is a very common virus (even though it is frequently vaccinated against…all my cats were vaccinated but two probably got it from their moms) but many owners never even know their cats have it.

Glad to help Judith πŸ™‚ most vets won’t test for feline herpes.. It’s a virus that normally only causes an issue in the first year or two of life.. And only after that it causes problems if a cat is very stressed or sickly.. The most common symptom of herpes is a reoccurring eye infection & swelling or regular eye weeping.

Hi ECB – I have wondered with Dru. The lady I got her from was very lovely and adored her cats but there were loads of them and I would be very surprised if they were all vaccinated. I will try the L-Lysine and if it makes a difference then I will not be over-surprised. The thing I really notice is that it doesn’t take much to knock Dru’s health. Changing her food to a better quality product has really helped – she has grown and filled out a bit and her fur is just beautiful. I want to do the best for her and am so glad to have this place to come to for advice.

Hi Buttons- that rather describes Dru. It is good to be able to try something that may help:)

Oh Ms Moneypenny started to play.. I’ve discovered she has a serious soft spot for Mr B ! Infact she only purrs for him! And she only plays for him! MS Nutini had a few
Sniffs too and hasn’t growled at her at all πŸ™‚ things are looking good ..

The great thing about L-lysine Judith is tht it really promotes weight gain and make their coats so thick and soft πŸ™‚

Buttons, that’s great about Ms. Moneypenny and Nutini. Mac sniffs Comet and hasn’t hissed ;that I know of) lately. Funny, he sniffs Comet at his chest and feet, perhaps signaling that he does not intend to be the alpha.

awwww…. the intricacies of new cats and interacting/settling in with the family …. great stories, and Buttons and Joan, you are both so good at it! … Sharing here really helps all of us, cause you just never know when our Meadow buddies will send a little one our way πŸ˜‰

… well, the box is changed, the floors swept/mopped, and the minor dusting attended to …. sitting down to catch up on a little imput work, but will quit early to enjoy doing the Thanksgiving table decor …..

Yes Joan that’s exactly what it means πŸ™‚ Mac knows his place and that’s why there has been no fight all extremely good signs! Comet is comfortable with sharing his territory .. The best sniff is a nose to nose so if you see that without any hissing then that’s as good as you can get …

AV enjoy your table decorating πŸ™‚ I’ll be putting out tree and Xmas decorations up on Friday .. There’s a tv show on called “the Late Late toy show” it’s been on for decades and for me it’s the first thing that gives me the Xmas feeling so that’s why I put the tree up so I get an extra “hit” of Xmas spirit πŸ™‚

It took a while, but I think Tommy sent Mac to me. For those of you who may not remember Tommy, he was a feral orangie, who was pushed out of the gang next door. I started feeding him, and he even let me pet him a bit while he was eating. He had an amazing ability of knowing when a storm was coming, and he got a huge meal before hunkering down in a nearby abandoned house (which probably has cable TV and plays animal planet all day & night!). I knew he was too feral to ever come in (though thankfully he had been neutered), but I hoped he would be my outdoor buddy in the spring. Alas, that spring, Tommy disappeared, probably into the woods. Fast forward a bit more than a year, and a tabby shows up!
Buttons, Comet and Mac did go nose to nose, without hissing! Leela is the wildcard, but she doesn’t come downstairs and Mac seems to prefer downstairs.
AV, you and your decorating is so inspiring! I just packed up Halloween stuff the other day, and the summer toys still need to he organized and packed away. There’s a beach ball under the dining room table! I did get a few Thanksgiving things out though.

I remember Tommy Joan .. Who knows maybe some kind person on the other side of the Forrest started feeding him just like you did..

Nose to nose touch without any hissing or growling is a very good sign.. And the fact that he’s not dominant over comet means he wouldnt feel the need to be dominant over Leela or at the very least she wouldn’t pick up on a tense atmosphere.. As introductions go comet and Mac have had an excellent one!

As soon as I seen Nutini give Ms Moneypenny I knew it was gonna be ok.. Yesterday Nutini did approach her and lifted her paw as if to tap her on the head but she stopped and gave her a nose to nose sniff instead ..

Hi Buttons (and anyone lurking, or who will be lurking or who will come in),
Just stopped by for a quick minute as just got an “emergency project” to do. Usually I just edit letters several times a year for a non-profit, but in this case I am needed to write the letter (for which I will of course be recompensed more than the usual rate). But have to put some thought into it and deadline is Wed.
Judith, somehow I have managed to continue my handiwork, now as knitting, without interference from either Meadow kit Nicky or my Dorry. Only thing is that I have to keep a sharp lookout so as not to leave any notions, ie stitch markers, needles around.
Dark, damp and gloomy here but warmer than expected and as it seems to be the case in IE, real warm weather predicted for tomorrow.
Well, best to get myself propurrly fueled and get down to it! L8R!

    hope this works:

Here’s my Thanksgiving table …. it’s still very light outside, so the little sparkley lights and candles don’t show up too well, but it’s so bright and cheery! I just love to decorate for the holidays!
