Hello Everyone! I’m going to try to make this as short as possible but no promises. I work at walmart and we had a wild cat that kept having kittens on our patio in lawn and garden (two litters since feb). I got this really stupid idea that if I caught the mama cat in a pet carrier and took her home with the babies she would have a safer place to raise them and I could get her a nice home for her kittens and herself. I caught her yesterday and put on gloves and brought her kittens home to her as well. SHE WENT PHYSCO KITTY. She went to attack her babies and I stopped her…shes back to being a wild kitty. NOW I have 5 babies. From what I’ve gathered they’re about a week to two weeks. Their ears are standing up and their eyes are open…except for one who still has alittle of the black stuff on his belly button and one eye halfway closed. I have ran into some MAJOR problems… 1) They will NOT for the life of me eat from a bottle. I have to squeeze it alittle to get some in their mouth to make them swallow it but I’m scared that this will cause them to get milk in their lungs and die. Im scared to use an eye dropper or something like that cause of the same problem they move about so much I might get it into their lungs. 2) How much and how often should I feed them? Like an oz every few hrs??? 3)They has slept the entire time Ive had them whigh hasnt even been 24hrs yet but I just want to make sure this is NORMAL. I think that is all. Any advice would be great!!! I just dont want them to die because of my stupidty.

Get an eyedropper. Just put a little of the KRM in their mouth at a time. Remember do not use cow milk. You will need to wake them and feed them every few hours. You probably should get some help from a local vet or animal shelter. They will be able to show you what to do. Good luck with your kittens and please post as you enjoy watching them grow.

Hi Maranda, you do have a lot on your hands but you came to the right place! TDK is a great community with lots of good advice. You may have already seen there are numerous threads about baby kittens, hand feeding and general care and advice. You can also click on the pink tags on the left to get more specific info. Based on my own experience, I think if the kitties have their eyes open and their ears are up, they are probably more than 2 weeks old, more like 3-4. Also, when you feed each one, wrap him/her gently in a towel or blanket like a little “purr-ito”, that holds their feet still and makes them feel warm and cozy so you can give them the bottle and they get the most out of the feeding. Good luck with your little family, keep us posted on how it’s going!

By the way Maranda, if you work at Walmart you may already know they have a well-stocked pet department with lots of kitten supplies! You can get the KMR formula and about everything else you need right there, it’s the main place I shop for my kitty supplies.

Feed them on their feet not on their backs so they do not get it in their lungs I used a eye dropper and after a while they learned to suck and I was ableto start w/ a bottle the store ones you always have to make a bigger hole but do not cut w/ scissors. Also make sure to keep them warm I put a hot water bottle in the laundry basket w/ a towel over it in the corner so if they wanted to lay on it they could but left plenty of room if they did not. Massage their little potty parts w/ a warm wet cloth so they are able to go potty. They may go on you but they need to go.

When I first took in my kitten Cowboy, he looked about the same and I figured him around 2 to 2 and a half weeks. Are they trying to walk or just slide around?

Cowboy wouldn’t eat much from a bottle either, but then he got the knack of it. Your kittens might just need some time to figure it out – don’t give up on them! Five kittens is going to be very interesting, but at least they’ll have siblings to grow up around.

I fed Cowboy every two hours and at first I was very discouraged because he would barely eat any of it. After awhile, though, he would drink a whole bottle! You just need to give them some time and also don’t forget to stimulate them after feeding. It’s not until around the three week mark that they’re able to go to the bathroom on their own. Also sterilize the bottle in hot water..kittens are fragile and will catch something easily.

Sorry guys that it has taken me soooo long to respond. As you know I’ve had my hands full! They’re eating really good. I feed them every four hours for the past week. At first I was very upset because they wouldnt eat and they wouldnt do the number two. I called petsmart and asked them what to do about the potty part and they told me to get this hairball stuff that would make them go. I didnt put but like a drop in each bottle and the next day they did it! I tried to get them to go by rubbing their bottoms and belly with warm water but it didnt work. I still do think they’re eating as much as they should but they’re eating enough to stay alive which is ok with me. I am going to put a litter box in their little home (my closet) and see what happens. Is clay litter ok????

Welcome to TDK! I missed your first post, but it sounds like you’re doing great with these little ones ~ kudos to you!! Have you had a chance to take them to the vet yet? They should probably go see a vet at least by six weeks old, sooner if you think there is a problem. I think clay litter is ok; I used it for my babies, at eight weeks, and it’s what they were using in the animal shelter where I got them, too, that’s why I stayed with it. Just make sure the sides of the box are low enough for them to get in and out; at first, you may have to ‘show them’ how to use it…. take your finger and scratch in the clay while they watch, then gently place them in the box, and take one of their little paws and try to help them scratch. It may take a few times, but they will catch on quickly when they are old enough…. Mother Nature and instinct are wonderful things!!!

Please keep us posted on your little darlings! Can you take any pics of them? What are their names? You can set up a catster page for free. Click on my pink name and the page will show you the link to my kitties catster pages. Many of us here have set them up for our cats.

Three weeks is a little early to start using a litter box. When you try to stimulate them to poop remember that mama cat would be licking them to get them to go. That’s the action you should try to copy.

What has happened to the poor little mama cat? Is she back at Walmart? You probably won’t ever be able to tame her but could you catch her again and take her in to get her spayed? If you check around with your local vets, shelters and rescue leagues for places that will TNR (trap, neuter, release). The poor mama’s life will be short and unhappy if she keeps having kittens.

Clay litter is the best choice when they are so young. If they ingest clumping litter (which they might do since they are just babies) it can block their plumbing.

Please update us when you can – we all want the very best for your babies.

I havent named them since I wont be able to keep them. I cant really afford to take all 5 kittens to the vet but we do have a vet that comes around for low income residents that can give them thier first set of shots and neuter so I will do that before I give them to good homes. I just hope I can find them all one. I havent seen the mama anywhere so Im just hoping that she’s out living a good life. I do however have trouble getting them to poop without using the stuff I bought at pet smart. I do the whole wiping the bottom down with a warm cloth and all it does is make them pee ALOT. I will try to take pictures on my next day off but no promises cause I rarely get time to do anything extra.

Hi, ok so here goes, I don’t have help for you but something you said i think might help me. last wednesday someone dropped off a box of five-five weeks old boy kittens on my front porch. The day my neighbor found 3-2 week old kittens she waited 2 days for the mother to come back and she never did. i live on a main road where people drive over 50 mph so it isn’t unlikely that she was hit by a car. the older kittens take care of themselves pretty much and do great with the litter box and everything. the little kittens however took a while to get used to the dropper and bottles but love them now. however for some reason unknown one of the little ones stopped eating, and the vet said you can squeeze the bottle a little into her mouth and she will swallow, just make sure she isn’t on her back, which we did make sure. late last night she completely stopped eating. wouldn’t open her mouth or anything and while holding her this morning she died. i was so sad, but onto the thing i need help with, all of the kittens will go pee after eating when induced, but the only one who would do #2 was the little girl who died. so i was wondering what that hairball stuff you got from petco was called, because i will try anything to keep these girls healthy.

Hi Katrina! I’ve been bottle feeding a kitten since I found him and his two siblings 4 weeks ago. They were only a few hours old. Two of the babies passed away, but little Brutus is a fighter, and he’s four weeks old today.

He is still eating from the bottle. I tried introducing some kitten wet food to him, but he is not ready for it. I still have to stimulate him to pee and poo…I’ve tried putting him in some non-clumping litter, but he’s not ready to learn how to poo/pee on his own. Here is a video that may help you to get the poo out of your baby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufFWLmpIu08

It’s very important to keep them warm. A drop of mineral oil would be better to help in elimination than hairball medicine. Be sure that the formula is warm…not too hot, not cold…and that the baby is warm when you give it to him. Massage his little belly after he eats. Be careful not to let him aspirate any formula. I’m happy to share with you everything that I’ve learned from this experience, which is not over with yet. So far, it sounds like you’ve been doing very well!

My kittens that I found didn’t like anything except this food you can get at vet caled science diet it’s for cats and dogs it’s made of basically pure ground turkey and i mix it with kitty milk to a soup like and they love it. You have to take a Popsicle stick and put it in their mouth to taste first and then they are like “ohh what’s that yum” also google VCA vet free exam they are in 39 states thwy are giving free exams for new clients with Internet coupon
