Can any one give me any advice as to what I should do and if I should be worried?
I took in three orphaned 3-4 day old kittens (one died by the second day :() now they are 7-8days old.one has its eyes open and they are 5.5 oz. They developed some very liquid poop. since I live in a small town no one will take them and all the vets I called only one called back told me I’m doing good, but didn’t offer to look at them.
The diarrhea has lasted about four days. I corrected the amount of food I give them about two days ago. It’s started getting better but it’s still liquid, and they go about every other time. They don’t pee a lot just enough to cover the top of a cotton ball (it drips out) and its a light yellow. I read I could use pedialyte but I used he liquid canned kmr and I can’t find how to do it with that kind (just with the powdered kind) I don’t want to start over feeding them again if I use that along with the liquid formula. I did the tent test and they seem to be fine (although its hard to tell their fur is so thick on their necks and they are constantly moving around and meowing) one seems to be more energetic then the other then the next day the other will be more energetic. They also have fleas and I’ve washed them but the fleas go up around their eyes and they won’t sit still long enough for me to safely pull them out (plus all the flea combs are to big for their hair)

Hi Robin, bless you for saving these babies. The canned KMR tends to cause kittens to have diarrhea and the powdered causes constipation. As long as they don’t seem to be dehydrated, and they are eating fine, then I wouldn’t worry about the pedialyte unless they are going all the time and it is VERY liquid. I would switch them to goat’s milk as it will help settle their tummies and won’t cause the constipation or diarrhea from the KMR. You can find it in the cold milk section of the grocery, or in the baking aisle in cans. The canned is condensed so just add water 1 to 1. I raised my last kitten on it entirely and he did so well. I am going to post some links for you that will help with their care. I refer to them when I am raising kittens as I forget the little things sometimes. You are doing all you can at this point for their fleas, as they are too young for flea meds. But washing them in Dawn will kill the fleas and you can take a damp washcloth and wipe their eyes and ears and noses to remove fleas. As long as they aren’t covered in fleas, they will eventually die off.

Thank you for responding. I looked for the goats milk today and couldn’t find it in my local store, but in two days I will be going grocery shopping at the bigger store a town over so I will look then. They poop less frequently now (every other feeding or every three feedings) however, it is still liquid (it falls down the back of them) and sometimes the poop in their bed between feedings (which I don’t know if I should be concerned about that). Their pee is a yellow color in which I read it shouldn’t be , but they pee almost every time. The skin still goes back in place when pinched. They are still gaining weight and now are 6.6 ounces. I feed them 8ml per ounce of weight. Should I be worried about dehydration because of the pee color and how frequently they poop and urinate?? also because they are pooping so much their butts seem to be irritated what can I do for that since I can’t avoid them pooping? If I should be worried about potential dehydration what actions can I take to avoid it until I get the goats milk?
    Thank you so much

    Hi Robin,

Pick up some plain Pedylite to prevent dehydration. You don’t have to mix the Pedylite with anything. You can use a dab of vaseline or Olive oil on their butts. The Goats milk will help balance their systems out.

Thank you, do I feed them the pedialyte instead of their formula or along with their formula?

You feed it in addition to the formula. I’m sure you’re frustrated because they are so small but you are doing a good job. Pick up some baby food that’s a meat flavor. Because it’s mush you can use a syringe, giving them a few drops at a time. This won’t change the poop consistency but it will give them nutrients. That’s what is important. Please read the links. There is so much info to ease your mind and help you and your kits.
