Hi all! I’ve been combing this forum since I recently became mom to a little kitten named Chance.

Heres the life story of my kitten so far: Last Monday, May 9, a feral cat abandoned a baby kitten outside my sisters home. She found her very cold and hungry. In a moment of a panic she fed her a bit of breast milk as she had nothing else to give her until I could make it over to her house with some KMR. It was only about 7 am and no pet stores were open so I had to buy liquid kitten milk from walmart, but the brand was not PetAg. We fed her this once or twice until the pet stores opened and we could get powdered PetAg KMR. Her pees started out very yellow but began to clear up. She had her first poop on Wednesday night that appeared normal, a mustard color and formed, but not too hard. She then had another Thursday morning that looked even more textbook “normal”. By Friday evening she hadn’t pooped again but we took her to the vet and the vet said she seemed very healthy and he wasn’t concerned with the lack of poop. Another poop didn’t come until Sunday which was very nerve-wracking. Everyone says something different but the general response was that if your kitten didn’t poop in 2 days something was wrong. We had been diluting her formula with an extra portion of water. We put a little bit of mineral oil on the nipple of her bottle as well. No luck, so we put vaseline on a soft tipped thermometer and very carefully used the very tippy top of it to stimulate a poop. After reading on here that powdered KMR tended to constipate we bought the liquid KMR and gave her that Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon she pooped out ~1 inch poop that was a little more orange than her mustard/yellow colored poops before. That night during every stimulation she would have her mostly clear pee but little drops of a more orange diarrhea. The next day, Monday May 16, she had a 3-4 inch poop that was softer than toothpaste but still formed, however it was mostly orange with some hints of darker orange and the mustard color. After that, she had 2 more little tiny drops of the diarrhea. She is gaining weight (the vet said she’s above average), eats well, is active when hungry or woken up, meows, and purrs. However, I’m very nervous about the orange poops. Should I take her back into the vets? or maybe just try switching her to goat’s milk? The only reason I’m hesitant about switching her to goats milk is because she’s had human milk, a random brand of liquid kitten milk, powdered KMR, and now liquid KMR. Will the switch upset her even more, or would it be worth it in order to get her regulated, no constipation or diarrhea?

Heres a picture of our baby from May 13th. She now has her eyes almost entirely open!

OH MY GOSH! What a sweet little Tuxedo kitten!! She looks like my Willow, except he has a smudgie beside his nose!
IMO, I would switch her over to the goat’s milk and you won’t have any more problems caused by the KMR. Now most kittens do have worms from their moms and sometimes one celled parasites too, which can cause diarrhea. Those can all be cleared up when she’s old enough when you take her back to the vet. Goat’s milk is a complete food and you won’t need to supplement until she’s older and starting on wet food. I will post some links for you as they have lots of info, and guidelines on starting solid food, litterbox training, and weaning. I don’t think you have anything to worry about with the frequency or the color of her poop. Great idea actually in giving her human milk, as it would be much better than cow’s milk that contains lactose.

Thank you so much! Does it matter what kind of goats milk? At my local grocery store they have liquid that is ultra-pasteurized. There’s also powdered that is pasteurized. Does liquid or powder seem to make a difference? And do I want it to be pasteurized?

Yes, you want pasteurized goat’s milk. The brand doesn’t matter. I don’t even think it matters if it’s powdered. I used the canned, because it was easy to buy a few cans and stick them in the cupboard. When I needed one, I took it out, mixed it with water and stored it in the refrigerator and used it up.

You need to mix the concentrate 1:1 with water. I agree you are doing a good job so relax…
