On August 24, 79 C.E. Mount Vesuvius erupted in a huge explosion. Can’t do much about that now so let’s recall ancient Pompeii prior to this disaster with a Baccanalian Toga Party. Some vino and perhaps a reading of Classics, such as “Cattulus,” or Ovid’s “Catamorphoses.”

My most favorite thing is to study culture and lives of people. I visited Pompeii when I was stationed in Naples. I also climbed to the top of Vesuvius and looked into the crater. It is still active. Togas were different colors. The standard color was white or beige but depending on societal status they could black, blue, brown or purple.

Oh yea- I was a virgin once too but it wasn’t after a toga party! ๐Ÿ˜† That cat armor is cool.

These are body molds of how people died in the Pyroclastic flow of Vesuvius. Pyroclastic flows send huge amounts of ash and gases. The gases are what killed the people of Pompeii.

BTW-LilBit found a cricket in the garage and brought into the living room. He and Miss Moppet were playing with it so I assumed it was finished. A couple of hours later, I see it coming out from under the chair. They found it again but it went under my desk…where I’m typing!

At least I know why it sounded like a cricket was in the house.

The quake news out of Italy is not good at all with many deaths reported and villages destroyed. It all hits too close to home here in NZ after the devastating quake here in 2011.
Prayers for all in the Italian quake area.
PG, brave little cricket. Hope it makes it back outside safely.

Great pics today! ….. I’ve only ever seen a volcano in Hawaii ….. I’d love to see Vesuvius …. of course Son has ….. and I’ve never toured Italy …. another bucket list item …..
Really watching the tropics, it’s very likely the tropical storm will develop and head my way ….. right now it seems predicted for the east coast, but wind shear can easily change and suck it in the Gulf ….. we’ll be ready, my house is fitted with hurricane shutters, I’ll just need to stock up on food …..
Have a great hump day everyone!

Here’s the news from Italy. It hit in the early morning when most people were sleeping in the homes.

Myanmar was hit by a deep earthquake, as well.

Good morning all! Floods and hurricanes and earthquakes…devastation everywhere. We are all so very lucky, and praying for these victims.

Amazing pics PG, of the people frozen in time. So sad too. Love all the kitty pics too, especially love the f*ckin your shit up since the dawn of civilization saying ๐Ÿ˜›

Dau got her staples out this morning and is doing fine. Still no strenous activity for 4 more weeks. But she can fold laundry and cook a little. No pain, which is amazing for only a week after surgery.

Batten down the hatches AV, I hope the storm misses you and blows out to sea where it bothers no one!

Good morning – sad to hear the news out of Italy.
Ooh a cricket – hours of fun!
Sure hope you don’t get hit by a storm, AV. The Atlantic has been suspiciously quiet. 2 months before the official season ends though.
It’s a beautiful summer day here in Jersey. Heat and humidity will build over the next several days.
Comet was on my dresser during the night. Don’t know what I was thinking (I wasn’t!) when I picked him up. Those claws went right into the cloth runner and took stuff with him. On goes the light so I don’t step on anything. *sigh* Took a while to get back to sleep after that!

Late to hearing news of horrendous disaster in Italy as slept in, bedtime was o’dark thirty as 2:30 am. Bit under it today.
I’d virtually go with you PG. Lost mine too, not at a toga par-tay either!
Peeps frozen at moment of impact creeps me out a bit, but well, it happened. Can’t recall name but once watched interesting doc on Pompeii disaster from which few escaped.
Why KJ, just why? Jiminey Cricket! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Steamer out today. Going to revive self by going to n’hood library, clean out mail on server, see if any books entice, then back to steel self for 6:15 spin class.

What’s your theme song – share if you care to!
I’ve always said “Send in the Clowns” was my theme…still could work or
“I Did it My Way” lalalala…basically the titles vs all lyrics… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hi guys. Another long but good day here. On Wednesdays I clean a house after dropping son off at classes, then pick him up without having returned home…while younger son spends most of the day at home doing school alone. Worked out fine today.

Great that your daughter is doing so well, KZ!

I’ll have to think about that theme song, JK.

So many songs to choose from. Varies from moment to moment. Could be “I Love Rock and Roll” – Joan Jett. Or “Don’t You Want Me” – Human League. Or …
Back out to top off day with spin class.

I’ve not been posting. I’m terribly upset about Amatrice, though at the same time feeling a bit guilty about caring more about humans and other living beings in central Italy because I studied there and have friends and family there. The people and beasties in Myanmar (oh, those tiny delicate southeast Asian cats) are every bit as important, as are people, other animals and plant life hit by war and other catastrophes.

    Paws up all !
Good news, my ultrasound scan is all clear. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€
PG, I love the volcano pick-up line. ๐Ÿ˜†
Such sad news from Italy. Thinking of all affected and sending prayers.
AV, unpack that tutu and blow that storm apart before it can form.
KZ, that is great daughter is doing so well.
Tsk tsk Comet, Meowmy was just moving you from temptation.
KJ, thank you for that cricket link. It is wonderful, I have it playing now and I am finding it relaxing. I must try it when Shadz is in the room. I’m not sure where she is at the moment, either upstairs asleep or outside sheltering from the rain.
JK, I have no idea what my entrance tune would be. I will have to think long and hard on that. I know what my sister KK would say in jest(the same thing I would say for her)an Elton John song. I will let your imagination figure out which one but remember we both have a well developed hilarious sarcastic sense of humour. ๐Ÿ™„ ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ โ—
Hi ECB, glad your long day should be over by now.
Lagatta sorry that you have friends/family connections where the Italian quake has happened. Positive Vibes for them.
It’s a wet day here after a good rainfall overnight and heavier rain forecast for this afternoon. We need it as things were becoming very dry and the weeds that I allow to flourish and give to the neighbours hens were wilting badly. LOL ๐Ÿ˜† Just heard a rustling in the fallen magnolia leaves out front and went to investigate. I startled a fluffy black cat just about to squat for a pee in a dry patch. It took off up the drive and across the road at top speed.

Just watched heartbreaking vid of the small mountain village Pescara del Tronto in Italy almost totally destroyed by the quake. Rescue dogs had signaled something in the rubble and as heavy machinery couldn’t be used people dug by hand and found someones pet dog alive and dug it out. Poor thing looked so sad and confused. Don’t know it’s condition but it was gently carried away to be checked over, as important as any person rescued.

MS, thank goodness for results! Good to hear good news – tks for sharing. Guess you can breathe easier now!
I actually thought that the cricket vid was going to annoy peeps. Neat that you enjoyed it!
I think that I can surmise the Elton John song referred to – as could refer to me too – could it possibly relate to a certain “B” being back? Not you, surely not you!!! Or must I ponder through the entire repertoire?
Well that Wed eve spin class takes it out of me. Instructor takes no prisoners! Was actually quite nauseated on way home. But might ensure srs sleep tonite – or wakefulness – one never quite knows!

๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† KJ, you hit the nail on the head with the song title. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†
It is just as well that sister KK and I like each other. The ‘B—-‘ term is used with love between us.
Yes I can breathe much easier now.
That must have been quite a spin class to make you feel nauseous.

Now doesn’t that further explain the earthquake in Italy Wed what levelled a town and decimated nearby ones. In the wee hrs of 3am. They found a dog. I just hope no kits were there.

An Italian hilltown without molti gatti e gatte is unthinkable. The only hope is that they do seem to have a sixth sense and can feel the signs of earthquake before humans do.
From the Guardian, a man searching for his sister and her husband:

โ€œThereโ€™s no sound from them, we only heard their cats. I wasnโ€™t here, as soon as the quake happened I rushed here. They managed to pull my sisterโ€™s children out, theyโ€™re in hospital now.โ€
And yes, we are well aware of the problems in Italy, but it is a place where cats and dogs will be treated with the same attention as humans. The “Franciscan” element, I guess.

MS, so glad to hear about your ultrasound.
