Supposedly there’s a huge number of beer can collectors out there who meticulously open a beer can from the bottom, empty it (and drink the beer, of course), then wash and dry it.

    Everybody’s gonna collect something

My beer-drinking friends rarely buy cans; almost always bottled beer. And some of them make their own. I almost never drink beer; even one makes me feel bloated. I do sometimes buy a good local dark beer, St-Ambroise Oatmeal Stout, to use as a basis for a braise. It is also good for making onion soup, especially if I’m serving it to vegetarians.

I tend not to “collect” things. Sure, I have a lot of books and more than a few cat figurines, sculptures and images, but most of the latter were gifts. And I wouldn’t call plants a collection unless it is a specific type of plant (such as orchids). They are living things like my cat and myself.

Still cold and icy here. I have to run an errand, but I can take the bus. I love to walk, but don’t feel safe walking through the tunnel under the railway line, as that can be an icy spot on an incline. The weather is very unstable and will go above 0c again this weekend.

Some people also collect the pretty painted tins tomatoes from Italy come in. I may save one if I happen to find a particularly pretty one, to use as a pen and pencil holder on my desk, as they are colourful and cheery.

Now, if have a sweet tooth…drink along with:
    beer sweet treat pairigs
Looks more like Halloween sipping fun!

OK, back to my desk…than li’l walk around n’hood for it’s clear w/little sunshine but still cold – +29 about now!

It may seem odd or stupid to collect/recycle beer cans but there are approx. 55 millions beer cans in the world at a given time (I looked it up). Interesting fact of the day…or not

PG, those LoveMeow stories get me efurry time! I should tell my stylist about Betty the Salon kit. Salon is in his basement and while Pluto the pup as almost always there, purry tuxie Enzo makes a rare appearance. He should have a regular job!

I’m not much of a beer drinker, but I find that candy-beer pairing chart intriguing!

When hubby and I were dating and his parents went on vacation, his brother and friends would build beer can towers on the kitchen counter. Can’t do that with a nosey cat in the house!

Good afternoon all. It’s another scorching day here, we got to 30C and over yesterday by my thermometres and it’s the same again today. These temps are not whet we get on a regular basis but we do get them off and on this time of year. That doesn’t make them any less bearable believe me and they are forecasting temps up to 35C in the coming week.
I am very interested in a nice cold beer but not the beer can. In fact I have been having an ice cold shandy the last few days, cold beer and Sprite lemonade and I don’t normally drink alcohol.

I didn’t make it to the Cafe yesterday, it was just too hot to think or function. PollyMonster I really sympathise with you when you have those temps in the 40’sC. It really is the case of just hibernating in the house with whatever cooling system you have going. For us that is fans and open windows and doors.
All cans, beer, soda and food get recycled here, except for one that is supporting the bottom shelf of the computer desk. Everything has its use.
Lagatta that dark oatmeal stout sounds wonderful for a braise or stew. I used to drink stout when I was breastfeeding the girls to help with milk production. It really worked.
I have collected frog ornaments in the past but kept my collection to about 24, they had to be realistic and porcelain, stone, glass or pewter. My smallest frog is smaller than a little finger nail and is Japanese.
PG, lovely stories about the hair salon cat and the elderly man and his cat.

I don’t mind a light beer in very hot weather but it’s years since I’ve had any. Can’t drink wine at all. Sigh. I used to, and Australia produces some excellent wine.

MS, 30C sounds so mild, but then Melbourne is usually very low humidity. The hottest I’ve ever felt was in Port Moresby just before the wet season. Temps were only mid-30sC but the humidity was unbelievable – it felt like you were under a permanent hot shower. Temp control in our house is staged. The outside awnings are down for pretty much the duration of summer, and they are our first line of defence. Ceiling fans do a pretty good job of keeping us comfortable on the milder days, but once it gets to a certain level of discomfort on goes the airconditioner. We have 40C forecast for Sunday so I’m going to try a variation on an idea garnered from this site some months back: I have some plastic containers of water in the freezer ready to wrap in towels and put near the kits’ sleeping spots.

PG, thanks for the links to those two stories. Not my hairdresser, but I do spend most of my chair time exchanging cat anecdotes while I’m being clipped!

Hi PM, yes it’s the humidity that is causing the discomfort. It’s in the 70% region and you feel like you are wrapped in hot cotton wool with no relief. People are complaining of dropping off to sleep during the day, probably because of lack of sleep at night. I almost wish I could join Shadz outside in the cool for a night. I wonder if she would share the door mat or cozy spot under a shrub with me. 😕
We don’t have air conditioning at our house but it is something we may have to think about with the changing weather. My small areas of garden are taking a real beating with the heat and require so much more watering.
Have you tried cooling pads for the cats? My daughter and sister have taken to putting them in the freezer and sleeping on them their selves.
😯 Another is putting ice cubes in their water bowls. A good one I have seen is partially filling a small balloon with water and freezing it then removing the balloon and placing the resulting ice ball in the water bowl(allow for melting).

I do like kit-related knick-knacks and admittedly have quite a few.

MS, here the weather is purrhaps the polar opposite what you and PM are experiencing.

Didn’t quite realize that when temps dipped the rain that we had yest froze over. Meaning that sidewalks ad some streets were skating rinks!!! When I left home had to go back for my cleats. And I was still scared as I go out/come home in the dark. 😯 Plus my boots were coming apart which did not help at all. These boots have now been consigned to trash and may or may not be replaced.

I didn’t set foot outside all day yesterday. I did get a lot of work done on my translation.

I had to bin a pair of boots too. They are neoprene and great for slushy weather, but one had a little hole, which I patched, but it eventually cracked and was impossible to repair. And boots get hard to find this time of year…

I did buy a pair of Sorels – unglam, utilitarian – and expensive – winter boots for $10 at a charity thrift shop here! I’m very happy about that. Still looking forward to being able to wear my pretty leather booties again though. I hate winter.

Livia is a great heater, though.
