Camille, my cat Whiskers was diagnosed with Acute Kidney Failure. She had always been a small cat so her losing weight came gradually. When she became lethargic and wouldn’t eat or drink, I took her to the vet on Tuesday. He said that she would only last three to four more days. In the meantime, on the advice of my vet, I gave her subcutaneous fluids and a shot of pain meds so she was comfortable. I made the decision that if she hadn’t passed naturally by Friday, I would help her to the Rainbow Bridge. She passed naturally lying on my chest on that Friday morning. She has been gone now three years and I still remember it like yesterday. I had the best Vet one could ever have and I trusted him completely but knew in my heart what I needed to do for my Whiskers.

I echo what Emma says, listen to the Vet and make a decision based on professional and your own heart. Only you know if it is time to help Peebee to the Bridge. Whatever you decide we are with you in spirit. Hugs, prayers and purrs.

Camille, I echo what the others have said, you have been PeeBee’s friend and caretaker for 19 wonderful years and you will know when its that time help her to cross the bridge if she doesn’t do it herself. You have my prayers with you in this time, its hard very hard and most of us have been thru it too.

Thanks again everyone, for the kind words and the hugs. I’m happy to say Peebee seems a little better after 2 treatments. She’s eating a little and drinking water. She lets me know when it’s time for her petting treatments, too.

I’m not getting my hopes up too much, but at least she doesn’t seem so sick. Next week, she’s scheduled for 3 treatments, so we’ll see.

This experience really has prepared me for the worst and I’ll know that I’ve done the best I possibly can for her when the time comes to say goodbye.

You are a tremendous source of support.

Hi camille – sory I’ve only just caught up on this thread. I’m really glad peebee seems to be responding well to the treatment, your vet sounds like a good guy. It’s amazing what they can do these days! My Mum’s cat (who lives with us) is 19 and has been on medication for kidney failure for many years, and he’s going strong; I hope peebee follows his example! 🙂

And my prayers go with you too, sweetheart. If PeeBee crosses the bridge next week, she goes from one loving place to another. And if she stays here with you a bit longer, she stays with someone who loves her completely and utterly.

For PeeBee, it is a win-win situation. For those of us who love our aged pets, it is bittersweet. But just think of all the love you’ve had, and all you’ve been able to give!

And that’s really the heart of the issue: the hearts.

    Much love,

    Emma

So sad to hear about your precious baby. I lost my 18 year old Cori last year to kidney failure. However, he had one good happy year with us after the diagnosis with subcutaneous fluid hydration ( agood friend got 4 more years with this treatmnet). It was quite evident when it no longer worked – persistent weight loss, not eating etc. God willing this will work for your little one, sounds like an encouraging response thus far, and if not, you know her better than anyone, so listen to your heart. My prayers to you.

My heart is breaking tonight….Peebee seemed to be doing better, but she keeps vomiting up the little bit of food she’s managed to eat. She’s due at the vet tomorrow morning for another hydration treatment. I just hate this. One minute I’m overjoyed to see improvement and when I see her so sick again, I’m in despair. I’ll see what the vet says…if it’s worth continuing.

She surely doesn’t deserve this type of end to her life. She won’t use her litter box, either. Thanks again to all who cared enough to write such encouraging and loving thoughts.

Peebee has been the most precious friend.

    So sorry to hear that Peebee is not managing to keep food down or eliminate. I hope the vet is able to offer some supportive therapy that will keep her comfortable. {{hugs}}

Camille…I’m so sorry to hear that PeeBee is not doing well again. I’m experiencing the same thing with my feral Bootie right now. I’ve got him inside in the bathtub right now.I’ve had to squirt antibiotics down him twice a day & have been force feeding him since Friday night. He stopped eating as of Friday morning, then he ate alittle on his own last night. But now he’s back to doing lousy. He also hasn’t gone to the bathroom since Thursday night or Friday morning. He’s almost 12 yrs.old according to the pathetic drunk a few doors down that abandoned him about 4 yrs.ago. I feel the same way. This beautiful cat,if it’s his time, does not deserve to spend his final time in life being force-fed only to continue to get weaker. I feel so helpless over it. I’m sending you {{{HUGS}}} & Prayers that PeeBee go peaceful if it’s her time. And {{{HUGS}}} for you as well in hopes that you have strength to help her if that’s what you must do.

Reading this reminds me of my C.C. I know how it feels to watch, wait and hope and have your heart break when things get worse no matter how hard you try to make it better.

Camille and Catchoo both of you and your babies are in my prayers.

Susie in CA and everyone loving a sick kitty…you have my prayers and soft kitty hugs for you and Bootie. Gees, I sure know that rotten helpless feeling. Peebee had another hydration today and found out she’s lost another couple ounces. She just won’t eat. She looks like she really wants to, but turns and walks away.

She goes in again Wed. for a blood test to see if her toxin levels are worse or better. I just don’t have a good feeling about this, so I’ve decided to try to stop crying in front of her, love her up as much as I can and let God decide what’s best. Maybe He wants a turn to pet and snuggle her.
