This is the second time I’ve had to post regarding to my kitten Dagger. I found him and two others a bit over two weeks ago. Since my last post he has started to get better, switching to goats milk helped him a lot. I had also started sitting with him in a steamy bathroom for 5-10 min twice a day and it seemed drastically improve his breathing.
Unfortunately out of no where the night before last he started getting lethargic again. Then yesterday he wasn’t very responsive and was reluctant to eat. He’s not constipated, he actually pooped on me yesterday morning. But I have no idea what caused his decrease in health. I separated him from the other two to be safe. Today he’s almost completely unresponsive, he won’t eat and will fall back sleep within a minute of being woken up.
He’s not suffering from the eye gunk anymore, and isn’t sneezing as often, but his breathing is really shallow.
Anyone who might know what is wrong and how to help him please let me know!

Hi Samantha – kittens can be real fighters but they are also quite delicate, as you have probably discovered. This could be something that needs veterinary intervention pronto, as kittens can fade really fast with very little warning. A prompt vet visit could make all the difference for Dagger (cool name!).

The problem I’m facing is i can’t afford a vet visit, and the low cost clinics are all about 100 miles away. I want to take him, but i just can’t afford the cost of gas, tests, and more than likely over night surveillance of him.

Samantha he really needs medical intervention and may only need an antibiotic. We aren’t vets here but there is only so much you can do yourself and then a qualified professional needs to intervene. Make sure you keep feeding him as kittens fade quickly when they don’t get enough food.

I understand. Keep him warm and comfortable. You can’t treat what you don’t know, so comfort and love are primary. And of course, regular feedings. Hopefully Dagger will bounce back, kittens are very unpredictable.

However I really do agree with Kittyzee, and I hope you are able to take him, an initial evaluation will at least let you know what you are dealing with. Good luck!

Thank you to everyone who helped and gave me advice. However, little Dagger passed away two days ago. I would have notified sooner, but to be honest I’m not handling it well…

    Samantha,
Our thoughts are with you. You did all you could and wee Dagger knew love and kindness in his time. There is something called Fading Kitten Syndrome (FKS). No one knows how or what kittens will get it or even how to diagnose it. Now he has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is healthy and romping with the other kittens.

Samantha, I am so sorry for the loss of little Dagger. Please do not blame yourself. When raising kittens, the odds are stacked against them as their mothers are the best ones to raise them, but sometimes things happen and we have to step in. I have raised many kittens, and lost many too after thinking I was home free and they were going to make it. They become ill like Dagger: becoming lethargic, not eating and decline from there–it’s known as FKS or Fading Kitten Syndrome and there just doesn’t seem to be a good reason for the kitten to pass. I hope you feel comfortable coming here as many of us know the pain of losing our beloved cats/kittens and we understand your heartbreak.

Thank you, it actually does help being able to talk to others who’ve experienced this. He actually passed in my arms. I woke up early to check on him he was awake and seemed eager to eat. I fed him a bit and after I noticed a black mark across his stomach. Then he curled up in my lap like he always did after a meal, took two deep breaths and then he was gone.
I’m mainly glad he’s not in pain anymore. And that his sisters have both shown no signs of illness.
