Parent in laws cat that is about 15 years old is not eating and drinking very little water. Will not drink chicken broth or milk slightly warm. I have some goats milk formula (organic) and molasses that I thought might help him recover some strength since it has been almost a week since his appetite started to suffer. (going of a mix I made when saving a very sick a baby bunny)

The vet is thinking cancer and the treatments are very expensive so if my in laws do attempt that rout I just want to help him recover some strength since the treatment will be hard on him. I am not sure they can afford it but even if I can make him a bit more comfortable… Any thoughts on this or suggestions…

So sorry the kitty is sick. When my senior cat had kidney failure I gave him subcutaneous ringers lactate at home to keep him hydrated. The vet will teach you how, also youtube has tutorials. Human baby food meat from a jar would also entice my cat. The vet could certainly recommend other palliative measures. Sending prayers for all of you. Keep us posted.

    Hi Holly,

I’m sorry your guy is sick. Goats’ milk and baby food have worked to stimulate my kits appetite. You can pick up Nutra-cal at a pet store. It’s a high caloric paste that’s also good for lagging appetites.

Long term? You and parents in law have to decide about his quality of life.

Yes, treatment is expensive sometimes, prohibitively. The most expensive is radiation.

Update – Kaylow is very thin and week but did get him to drink a bit of the mix I made with kitten milk and the goats milk formula. I also got him to eat a small amount of kitten wet food from blue wilderness… so we will see if over the next few days he is able to regain a normal appetite again or at least a bit more strength.

I also advised my parent-in-laws to get some meat baby food for now as well.

Holly, you probably don’t want to hear this, but at 15 years of age and probably having cancer, probably the best thing to do for Kaylow would be to ask the vet how to keep him comfortable and let him go. He is at the top of the typical life expectancy for domestic cats, so he’s had a good, long life. Cats are not able to form any conception of length of life, but they have a great appreciation for quality of life. When they stop eating, it’s often a sign that they are ready to leave.

I know how much it hurts to consider this. Since 1979, I’ve been the guardian of a total of 18 cats. Three are still living and three died naturally. The other 12 left the world due to incurable illnesses and accidents. My feline sister left at age 12 because of stomach cancer.

God bless Kaylow and your family.

I know that was difficult to say. We are aware that is the most likely outcome. Wanted to make an effort for his sake and for the in-laws since they are older and this will be very hard on them as well. But he stopped eating again so we know his time is short.

Hi Holly – you are wonderful for helping your best, and I’m so sorry for your in-laws.
It sounds like keeping him comfortable and feeling loved is the priority now. Keep the tastiest, stinkiness food as well as water nearby in case he wants a taste.
Wishing you and your family comfort and peace.
