I’m not really sure where to put this, but this is just a little update on SP. Coccidia free! Weaned on solid food, mostly. Weaning her was super easy. I opened a can of Fancy Feast for Kittens, and she didn’t give me time to do anything, just went straight for the can. Now she’s eating Purina Kitten Chow. Bottle for breakfast, then EN Gastroentric for lunch (I tried Meow Mix and it gave her horrible diarrhea and wouldn’t solidify after I switched back to the fancy feast, so vet prescribed that. It’s working; she’s at a toothpaste level now and her poo is getting more solid each time), and Kitten Chow for dinner and snack, etc. I’m worried I might have weaned her too soon, cos she’s only 4.5 weeks, but she seems alright. Very playful, very big appetite, super sweet. It’s cute because she only purrs for me. She snuggles me a lot, too. She likes hiding behind the couch, too. She hates yelling, though. I live in… I wouldn’t say an unsafe environment, but the people I live with fight a lot and it’s not possible for me to leave, but it makes me (and probably SP) pretty anxious. I try to keep her out of that house and at my parents as much as possible, though. (I’d move back in with them, but none of us really want to go that route). I think that’s about it. If anyone could let me know where to leave these updates in the future that would be great!

    Yea Eli,

This is the place to post updates and it’s wonderful to know how your wee Sweet Pea is doing. She’s moving right along. I know what you mean about the wet food cause my LilBit Guy did that at about 4.5 weeks. Meow Mix is very bad cat food. Many kittahs have had diarrhea on it. Sorry about your environment. 🙁

    Keep us updates

Oh man, I wish I would’ve known that about Meow Mix before I tried it. I figured since it was kinda watery it would be easier for her to eat, or even catch on to the eating thing, but I definitely won’t be feeding her Meow Mix again, or using it on any future kittens. Environment should be getting better within the next few months or so, though. A friend and I are looking at apartments, and she’ll be bringing her kit with her as well, so SP will have more play mates. She’s really good with the pups and even kids, so I’m sure she’ll be okay when she meets the other kit! (She’s very fearless, and I’m trying to decide if that’s good or bad lol).

Now that I think about it, though, I do have a question. When would be a good time to introduce her to treats? Not catnip or anything (read somewhere that she prob won’t take to it until 6mos or so, and even then, I’m not even sure what Catnip is, so I’ll probably try to keep her away from it anyway until I know more about it). But just a “Good job!” treat when she potties in her litter box, or even just behaves really well, etc.

Awww, little Sweet Pea is doing so well! You can reward her now for a good job, just don’t over do it as too many treats can put pounds on cats. She is only 5 weeks so that’s really not a problem now, but could be in the future. I reward my cats when they get their claws clipped, and they go nuts for them, but they act like they are starving all the time anyway, LOL! Hope you can remove yourself and SP from the bad environment and soon~no one needs that!

Vet did say she was a bit underweight (3/4 of a lb when kits are usually a pound at 4 weeks, but said its probably because she was so malnourished when I found her, but said since she’s so healthy now to not worry too much about it), so I guess I wouldn’t mind if she added some weight with the treats. Any recommendations? I don’t want to accidentally get the wrong thing again! Wanna keep her as healthy as I can.

Now that Sweet Pea is on the mend she’ll put on weight. You should give her extra wet food so she’ll put on healthy weight. When she reaches milestones like using her potty by herself then give her a treat. You want her to associate a treat with good behavior. Being fearless is OK as long as you set boundaries. Kittahs can get in a whole lot of trouble with very little effort. 😉

I wish more people knew about Meow Mix. I’ve had two vets. tell me what a unhealthy food it is.

Give your wee girl gentle kisses.

Hi Eli – thanks for the update. Glad Sweet Pea is doing well and yes, now that she’s on the right track she should gain weight properly – 1 pound per month is average. Sorry about your living situation. She knows she can trust you and probably knows you get just as anxious as she does, so she purrs for you to comfort both of you.
