Time for the rock hard, fruit filled holiday cake. While fruitcake was popular in the 40’s and 50’s. On this Special Day, those with a sweet tooth can celebrate by eating a slice or two. Plan B is “gifting” your fruitcake to someone….anyone.

Nifty idea for a kit scratching post!

Purrsonally I loathe fruit cake. Tried it prob once. Those bright green/red cherries are an experience that I do not care to repeat. Ever again. Trying to pick them out of the slice was not a good look and time consuming. Although a well-hardened lacquer glazed loaf might work as a neat doorpost. 😉

I don’t like fruit cake and certainly won’t buy it. My Aunt married a German and he loved German food. So she would make the Stollen which is German fruit cake. I made a point of eating it so as not to offend my Aunt but I made up my own Brandy based glaze. This is made it OK. Since I was stationed elsewhere, she mailed it to me. I suspect Brandy based glaze can make a lot of things a bit tastier. 😆

    We’re off…to bed. Cya l8r and have happy~

Fruitcake, I used to love fruitcake and made one every Christmas. I don’t now, too much sugar in the cake. My fruit cake had the fruit soaked in ginger ale overnight before it was added to the other ingredients and made.
    Crossover pic –
For those of you who don;t like fruitcake have you tried Pannetone, much lighter and less fruit and makes a delicious bread and butter pudding should you allow it to go stale.

Lol at the fruitcake funnies! I always think of my grandparents house when I think of it…because they are probably the last generation to enjoy it in our family. Fruitcake as a scratching post…lol. And yes, brandy glaze would make all things better, PG.

KJ, the Gilmore Girls actor/spin enthusiast you mentioned plays one of my favorite supporting characters. I loved his storyline in the recent revival.

Facebook threw a memory at me today…from six years ago…Emily was the only cat in the house! We adopted Eko Jan 3, right after the holidays. Took the tree down a few days earlier than usual just so as not to tempt him. :).

Wow, I feel like I have missed a lot over this weekend….will have to go back and read posts more carefully, but I did see where CWS lost her mom over or before the holidays. My condolences to you CWS…it is so hard to lose a family member, especially your mother over a holiday. I lost my mom on Thanksgiving day many years ago, and know what you mean about not talking about it so as to not be a downer to everyone else. That shouldn’t be the case, and certainly isn’t here, we are here and ready to listen. ((CWS))

I have missed you guys–loved the cafe over Christmas JJ–so sweet and relaxing. Hello to everyone but I have gotta hit the shower before the day gets away from me! Be back later to read and hopefully to chat!

Once, many years ago, I did make fruitcake, but no red and green candied cherries! Mostly rum, actually. 🙂

Now, I only eat panettone, which is far less sweet and not really a cake, but a brioche. There are some oversweet panettoni with gooey fillings, but I only like the classic ones – there is a bit of fruit, usually raisins, but mostly butter…
Indeed, stale panettoni make a good bread pudding or French toast (pain perdu in French).

However, I buy any panettone I serve, as it is complex to make and I can find them on sale now in my neighbourhood. Good with espresso during the day and sparkling wine in the evening!

LOL @ everyone’s fruitcake adventures! ….. Mr. AV’s grandfather always made them ….. ya’ll can probably guess I detest it (hate most all fruit) …. but we graciously thanked him, then quietly disposed of it the next day …..

It is still in the 80s here, definitely one of the warmer holiday seasons in a while! ….

Since most all of us in our family have a cat, we did a ‘wrapped gift’ exchange for the kits …. Abby got a ‘nip rat’ – an overly large nip toy that is about 5 times the size of a little nip mouse LOL …. she loves it! ….

… stayed up late with Son last night, watching movies …. so nice to have some time with him …. but alas, I must get to inputting today, best get to it! …. have a great ‘day after holiday’ all!

Good morning – not much of a fruitcake fan here. Chocolate, on the other hand…
Comet humored me by jumping in a box that I put on the floor last night. He stayed in there for about 2 minutes, then went to his basket under the Christmas tree.
MS, I did read about your mum breaking her ankle, ouch! It’s great that KK is there to help her. Hope she heals well as feels better real soon.
I like Yanic Truesdale’s character in GG too. Michel has a strict died of very low carbs and lots of exercise! He also thinks of Loralai as the teacher in a Charlie Brown cartoon.
Rain earlier today but the sun is now out here in Jersey. It’s unseasonably mild too – I’ll take it!
Tuesday lunch should be quite a variety of goodies. In addition to emptying out mom’s fridge, I’m bringing a few things and sister will probably have a few goodies too.

Paw up waves g’morn from grey – chilly brewtown!
Hope all survived your Holiday weekend! It was nice to have extra time off – spent most of Mon at home w/kittehs 🙂

Haha fun theme today. I too don’t care for fruitcake.
    xmas stolen
Used to enjoy a lighter version as Xmas Stolen – coffeecake like w/raisins w/just 2 candied cherries as décor on top’s frosting as kid!

Here’s a link to reuse – repurpose your left over xmas treats/food:

Oh dear . . . I’m not a fruitcake fan either! Or Christmas pudding, to be honest – just not keen on dried fruit things really. I prefer simple food that can remember what it used to be.

Thanks for your kind words, KZ – I’m still dazed by it all, and by the way emotions will lurch suddenly up or down or sideways, taking you completely by surprise! It was the 21st when Mum left us, so it’s not quite a week yet. Sometimes it seems like years since I saw her – sometimes I can’t believe she’s gone at all. But it does help to have friends I can talk to.

    😀

And a message from me to MS’s mother: Get Well Soon! Once you are able to use the ankle, a little exercise is good, but not too much at once. Give it time to get used to being an ankle again. And plenty of rest is good for mending.

Off to feed some cats now.

CatWScotia, that is very sad, any time of year. It was a little different for me, when my mum died a few years ago – she was fine until she was 95, then had little strokes that created a sort of vascular dementia – not Alzheimer’s. She was mostly asleep all the time and drifted in and out of consciousness. My parents were relatively elderly when I was born; it is as if they were more my grandparents. So while I was sad and numb when all was over, I felt more of a loss when she was no longer “there”.

My father died much younger; about the age I am now (I’m a boomer). He was a lifelong chain smoker… My parents met as war workers in Ottawa.

So I know you just went through the motions, if that, at Christmastime. I hope you’ll feel a bit better when the light returns – while it gets colder here, you are very far north of here and it must be very dark outside as well as in your soul. Hope the pussycats’ warmth is some kind of balm.

As for a dark coat, do buy a nice chic one you’ll like and enjoy wearing in happier times.

CWS, I believe that grief has it’s own timetable. So give yourself time and IMHO when you feel overcome by emotion, just let it out. If this works for you. Everyone has their own way of dealing. Hope that this helps somewhat.

Thankfully ice completely melted. ‘Cept for the patch that I managed to fall on. 🙁 Fortunately caught myself and ended up with slight bleeding, but bruised knees (and torn tights which are way easy to mend.) I will prevail as I took care of everything as per usual. Well PG, it’s all your fault LOL.

This Montréalaise did not want to let you down. Ergo plan initially was to go to our “Grande Bibliothèque” to take out the balance of my new fave mystery writer’s books.

Did so, but first went on shopping trip. Our underground system where one mall leads to another is awesome! Stores busy but deals are fantastic! Bought me tights in okra and teal-ish green. I like to match my tights with my sweaters.

Then scored with 2 night shirts – both kit-themed so I know that you would have insisted that I buy them! One has long-haired tabby face on front and the following msg in French: Je ne ronfle pas – Je ronronne which in English means: “I don’t snore – I purr” hehehe! The other has kewel kits along with our fave kit words ie cattitude, cat lady, pawsome, meow. And here it is!

Final deal was neat black bag for way not expensive, less than 50% off. And while it’s not huge it manages to hold my reg stuff, which includes gym gear, knitting, etc.

All this after a not too bad spin class. Music was not horrendous, but not loud enough. And instructor prob noticed that I upped the intensity (since cohorts noticed.) I care what instructor thinks not at all as reg instructor is back next wk.

Now must chill after productive day. 😉

Good afternoon all, it’s another hot day here and doors and windows are open to let any breeze through the house. Temp in the shade outside was 27C/80F before noon.
CWS, condolences on your loss, I can imagine you are at sixes and sevens at the moment. I will pass on your message to Mum for when she has healed. I took her to her Dr this morning and her Dr told her that she must not take her moonboot off unless she is sleeping or getting wet or she would have her put in plaster. 😆 😆 I think she will behave now.
It’s great to see everyone back here again, so busy over the c/hristmas break with family and friends.
Lagatta daughter Meegz made Panettone once but it was quite involved so now she buys it.
AV, we also had wrapped resents for all the cats, Shadz got a new table mat for her plates to sit on, my grandkits got a fancy box for all their brushes to be in and they all got packets of greenies.
Comet, couldn’t you decide which was the best place to be? Airy has put up a little sun shelter on the terrace and we are wondering how long before Shadz is found sleeping in it.
KJ, your weather and your tights don’t get along well do they, glad you weren’t injured. Great night shirts.

I’ve actually been jonesing for that nightshirt myself, as it is funny catlady but the graphics aren’t tacky at all, and I very much like that shop, Simons. I’ve bought a couple of beautiful merino pullovers there, for a very reasonable price. It is an old firm that started up in Quebec City – founded in 1840. They are also patrons of the arts, and all the stores feature works of art such as mobiles.

I saw some very nice winter leggings in a deep wine or violet colour at deep discount, but don’t buy clothing online and didn’t feel like going out shopping downtown (I could also shop east of here at a major shopping centre that is a bus ride away). They were in “petite” for us shorties, as if not, I have to hem everything and it isn’t easy to hem leggings.

Moonshadow, not even my friend who worked as a professional “boulanger” (bread baker) makes panettone at home. We are actually very lucky that our glare ice melted as it did – back in 1989 we had a horrible ice storm in southwestern Québec, eastern Ontario and parts of northern New York State, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. There were also impacts in Nova Scotia.

I also sprained an ankle on ice a few days earlier. I’m NOT fond of winter… Fortunately KZ and I weren’t seriously hurt.

KJ, your nightshirt is just adorable! I love getting comfy clothes to sleep in and usually end up in long sleeved T shirts and jammie bottoms. I get twisted in gowns or long shirts and especially now when I can’t turn over very well due to the blasted hip.

MS, I meant to send blessings to your mother about her ankle. She needs to behave herself and wear the blasted moonboot, at least it’s something she can take on and off, whereas the plaster she can’t! I’m planning on following all the good advice from my doctor and the physio people when my hip gets done. Had quite a bout with the doctors’ scheduler as she wouldn’t call me back after I found out my insurance won’t let me have my surgery in the hospital that we originally thought. I told her this 2 MONTHS AGO, and here I sit thinking what is going on with my surgery date!! I made some phone calls today to shake things up–she called me within the hour and the date is January 23. However, another of my doctors is to call me in the morning as they were totally unaware that this major insurance company has taken the doctors’ hospital off of their list and this is going to majorly screw up scheduled surgeries for these and many other doctors in the coming months. I think that it was purposely kept secret from these doctors until the first of the year because the insurance company has the other local hospital in their pocket. Leave it to me to be the one that let’s the cat out of the bag! I HATE this stress on top of a major surgery coming up. EEEK.

Oh, and I’m not a fruitcake eater either. Like fruit, like cake, just not all chopped up and baked together. 😉

So sad to learn of Carrie Fisher’s passing. When my brother comes up this weekend a bunch of us will go to see the new Star Wars movie.
A man from the church stopped by with a poinsettia from the alter for mom. He was impressed to see that four generations were gathered for a weekly lunch.
