Some of you may or may not know that this Teacher Appreciation week. Normally we are jusr dreaded because of the homework issue, but Dee has found some amazing things for teachers! For one little moment I know that the things I deal with and the students I work with are appreciated. To all those teacher on TDK may you have a wonderful week and know that the efforts that you go through reach our most precious asset in this country, our children. Many of you know you teach not only your subject matter but character. Teach them with kindness and generous spirits!

    Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Fondahonda–as for you and Dorie—well you are the absolute best at not only teaching students, but teaching an old dog a new trick or two–thanks!

I’m on the business side of education, and I see teachers hard at work making a difference every day.

ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

One morning, just before dawn, a man woke early so he could watch the sunrise over the ocean. As he walked along the beach he came across a young girl who seemed to be doing something peculiar. She was picking up starfish and throwing them into the sea – one after another. He asked her what she was doing.

“The tide washes up all these starfish and they can’t get back by themselves,” she said. “They will die in the sun if I don’t throw them back into the water.”

The man looked up and down the beach at the thousands of stranded starfish. He couldn’t help telling her, “But there are too many starfish to save before sunrise. Why bother? You won’t make much of a difference.”

She paused for a moment, then picked up another starfish and threw it as far as her slender arm could manage. With a satisfied grin, she turned to the man and simply said, “I made a difference to that one.”

The man stood in silence, considering the girl’s youthful wisdom. Then, with a smile of his own, he reached down for a starfish…and tossed it into the sea.

    Make a Difference…Every Day

    Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

In 2006, my youngest, the “college kid” left home for his 1st year, taking classes to become a teacher. I do not know for sure if he will continue that as a career, but he will be graduating this month, with a double major in teaching and journalism. I am proud of him, whether he becomes a teacher or journalist. Teachers have been long admired by me, having been taught to love reading by my 1st grade teacher and so much more after that. Thank you to all the TDK teachers for doing a job that is so unappreciated lately.

I had one teacher who allowed me to know her, and in turn gave me my life. I was depressed and needed a friend. She became that to me. She was my accounting 1 teacher, but realized that I was well beyond that and taught me accounting 2 in my study hall. Not that I did anything with that though! She allowed me to use her room, to give thoughts to my feelings, and I wrote poems on the blackboard in the room. She would come in at the end of the study hall period I was in and look at what I had written. She would talk to me about the words and allowed me to voice what was in my heart. She helped more than she ever knew. I went back to see her in the years after I graduated and kept in touch for a while. I got to meet her family, but after a divorce and remarry, I lost touch. If this dear lady is alive, I know she knows she gave me strength and courage, and I hope her life is as good as mine has become. So, I salute this lady, who saved my life and my sanity. You took time to teach a girl how to move on and live. I miss you Elaine, and hope you are as happy and you have made me. I shall never forget you.

I admire all the teachers who do what they do. God knows, it can be a most difficult job. Just know, as I have spoken, that each one of you, can one day make a difference in one childs life, as Elaine did in mine, you have done your job. You deserve all the credit in the world. Someday, one of you will be in my grandchild’s world, just like you were in mine.

I appreciate all your hard work. It does make a difference. Thank you.

Lynn, you’re good at accountancy? That teacher may have given you more than you know. I am quite sure you could carry on your accountancy studies by night school or correspondence, what a wonderful second career that would be!

Thanks JCat, a little to late for that! I never liked being in a office and did use those skills for accounting in my younger days. Thanks for thinking of that for me, though. I prefer to move around and not be hindered by walls. But I do a mean budget and know my numbers to this day, which drives some people crazy!!
