    Did You Knowโ€ฆ
the earliest recorded music instruments are about 42,000 years old? Found in a cave in Germany, these flutes were made of bird bones and mammoth ivory. If they can make music, you can too! Break out your bubble organ, laser harp, clackamore or dulcimer and go crazy for Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day!

The Swedish Nyckelharpa-and obscure key fiddle.

Paws crossed that the heat breaks soon. In the meantime, pull out the old percussion spoons or Fiddle Dee Do and play away.

Enjoy your Sunday and have a happy~

We’ve got a houseful of musical instruments here – some odder than others! Mr CWS and our son have both made instruments, from dulcimers to violins and bagpipes, and those played have included recorders and whistles, flute, violin and viola, various guitars, concertina, hurdy-gurdy and keyboards.

Sadly, nowadays my computer keyboard gets more exercise than the musical variety. But I still sing when nobody is listening!

Oh wow CWS, that is quite a collection of instruments, the odd and not so odd. Have to say the hurdy-gurdy has fascinated me for years but sadly only seen it on TV.
Making instruments is a very special craft, dulcimers to violins and bagpipes, your men folk have a great talent. Mr MS’s late father made violins. We have a collection of instruments here too from recorders to a century old English made violin and a double bass and clarinet. Sadly neither Mr MS or I(who met playing in an orchestra) play our instruments now, life has become far too busy. ๐Ÿ™

Wow, CWS. That’s a great collection/hobby your family has.

Cute pics today…love kitty see, kitty do and the crossover pic is perfect.

Our Harry Potter book did indeed show up on our kindles at midnight. Son woke up in the middle of the night just to make sure. :). Easier than standing in line at the book store, I guess.

Hope everyone has a happy Sunday.

Crossover pic hehehe – might be fun to just pick off a choco clef before taking on the rest of the cake!
Not to mention the self-made “comb and tissue paper.”
Often thought it would be fun to play the triangle as in just having to hit a note once in a while, ’til someone explained to me that the deal is that one plays all the percussion instruments, and carrying around those huge drums, not a plan for KJ.
Have gotten into habit of getting out of bed early just to feed Dorry and then copping an hrs sleep. Not sure this is “best practices,” but I can’t have him starving, can I? ๐Ÿ˜‰

I agree with all above, CWS, that’s quite the collection of instrument! How special, I love the bag pipes best of all! ….. My family has a Scottish/Welsh heritage, and our Presbyterian church has a ‘kirking of the Tartans’ annually, which includes a 20+ member bag pipe band ….. they also hire out for weddings and such …. love to hear them play!

Yesterday I spent quite a while putting together my new pantry …. Mr. AV and handy Scottie put a huge wall of shelves in the spare room next to my kitchen, and I was able to ‘unclutter’ my kitchen cabinets and extra odd places that I have been storing my multitude of dishes, extra cookware, pots/pans, etc. My house is 109 years old, and while I love it’s historical character, that era did not build a lot of storage. They also have what I call compartmental floor plans – meaning the rooms are separated – kitchen is off dining room, living room is formal – it’s not an open plan like todays modern designs. Other than the aforementioned rooms, we have two large and one medium/small rooms off the main entry hall. The front room I use as my office (I work from home) the second is huge, and we use that as a family/TV room. The third that is just across from the kitchen is the smallest, and I’ve been using it to store my extra dining room table (I have two sets from 2 grandmothers), so Mr. AV had the great idea to make it a huge pantry. Great idea! I love it, and with the table I have in there being a drop leaf, I can fold it down, and it actually makes a nice breakfast room too …..

I’d best get to my box changing duties (its the day), then I’ll putz around in the pantry again …. making stuffed shells/lasagna later …. all that talk about Italian yesterday made me crave it …… L8R all!

Very cool, AV…a pantry room. Is that what is sometimes called a butler’s pantry?

EC, it is kinda like a butler’s pantry, and now I have tons of storage! … I’m sitting here laughing, the ‘Sharknado’ marathon starts soon ….. I must say I’m a sucker sometimes for hokie syfy flics …. The first one ‘Sharknado’ was hilarious, haven’t seen ‘Sharknado, the second one’ (what a original title), nor ‘Sharknado, Oh Hell No!’, (LOL), and then they’re premiering ‘Sharknado the 4th Awakens’ ….. not sure I’ll make it through all four …..

Hi everyone – the cat/instrument pics are cute and funny – I like trombone connected to the cat bone and kitteh see kitteh do.
Wow CWS, that’s quite a collection of instruments.
Glad the books arrived, ECB. I noticed a HP movie marathon has been on tv this weekend.
Ooh, how fun to set up your new pantry, AV! Nice to have room to store stuff and have new-found space in the kitchen. The setup of your house sounds very nice. The whole ‘open concept’ that’s so in right now is very nice, but there’s a lot to be said for separate rooms, they can each speak for themselves as opposed to one statement.
It’s a rainy day here in Jersey. We need the rain, and like KJ, I love a day when I can be home during a stormy day. Mama cat has been right outside under the lean-to most of the afternoon. Hopefully she will stay there and I’ll put some food out when the rain lets up.
My family was a musical one, and several instruments came out of the attic not too long ago. Mom donated them to the local music shop that works closely with young people. I think my nephew has my dad’s sax, and now my mom has her violin back. I played the trumpet and French horn a bit, but I was mostly a twirler, moving on from batons to the rifle in high school and saber in the drum corps.

Those pics show up purrfectly CWS! Love ’em! ๐Ÿ™‚
AV, wish that I had me a guy willing to initiate DIY projects for me, I could keep him busy for quite some time! LOL
PG, wonder if 42,000 yrs ago they were into “gangsta rap.” ๐Ÿ˜‰

Once again you come up with a brilliant crossover, MS. I would eat the clefs off before the cakes, too. When my cats are thumping their tails like that they’re not playing the tamborine.

I like the cat theme and the craftsmanship is gorgeous CWS.

I survived the first three Sharknados but watching all three (or four) at once, wow. I guess you could call it a cult thing…

Love the sound of rain, the smell of rain-I’m sure Mama waited for her dinner.

Egad! As if Dorry would allow you to starve him. They were playin’ dem bones so gangsta rap could be in. ๐Ÿ˜†

    Finally made it here.
OMG CWS ! ! ! That hurdy-gurdy is beautiful, a lovely pale wood and the inlay ! ! How wonderful having the cats on it, I have never seen cats done in inlay on an instrument before and the carving of the cat on the neck. That must make it unique.
EC, what kid could resist waking in the middle of the night to see if the next Harry Potter book had arrived on their E-reader. ๐Ÿ™‚
KJ, I had forgotten the paper and comb, every house has one. I can’t play one as the vibrations of the paper make my eyes run and nose too, not a great look. ๐Ÿ™„
AV, I am jealous of your new pantry. I have always wanted a walk in pantry ever since I discovered my Nana’s as a young child. A place of mysterious and amazing aromas and bottles and jars full of tasty delights for the tongue, interesting paper packages and small boxes with crumpled packets in them. Old canning rings hanging on hooks and drying herbs tied in bunches hanging on the wall. I loved hiding in the back of the pantry for the joys of all it promised and because my cousin never thought to look for me there and then I won the game. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€
JJ, sometimes a wet day is wonderful for just doing nothing in particular. We have had far too many wet days lately, they are really dragging and we have been warned of another week of wet weather. I may be developing webbed feet. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
PG, I would eat the cheesecake first and safe the musical chocolate for later or maybe not.
The smell of rain on dry earth is called petrichor – thanks to Dr Who for that piece of information.

Well I’m late in opening MOANday Cafรฉ! I had planned an early night, but got into a knitting thing where it took me like an hour or more to wind tangled yarn. Have not yet set a new record as in the other night took me like 4 hrs! But it’s done and I feel better for it.
Have never actually heard anything played on comb and tissue paper or tried it. Must sound like a kazoo, am I right? Did take piano lessons for a brief time, but not successfully.
Didn’t know that HP had a new book in series. Will have to check it out as loved all the others.
Petrichor – guess that’s the new thing that I learned today! Tks MS!
For sure PG, “gangsta” is timeless and ageless.
When Dorry thumps his tail like that it generally means that I’m in major trouble! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ
Well, it’s way late so I guess I’ll cast on sleeves for latest sweater (’cause cant’ wait ’til tomorrow.) Did finish front/back put them together and sewed in new purrsonalized labels that arrived on Fri. (mail still coming and going, yes!)

One more photo – so you can see how it works! (Just in case anyone fancies having a go.)

It is a one-off, MS – made to order, with the customer’s ideas included. It’s still the one Mr CWS plays the most, although he does have another one too.

KJ, isn’t it annoying when time just slips away while you are busy knitting or untangling yarn.
CWS, aha, a secret panel. It is an interesting and complicated looking instrument.
    Time I prepared dinner.
