I got Smalls on friday evening. On saturday i sarted giving her KMR replacement milk. I didn’t notice the can said to refridgerate after opening so it stayed out until monday night/tuesday morning. She didnt poop until monday night it was brown and looked normal to me but this is the first kitten im taking care of on my own. Later monday night/tuesday morning she pooped twice but this time i think its diarrhea. Its still brown and it smells really bad. She has gas and fleas and is constantly crying unless im petting her. I put a flea collar on her for a day but took it off when i realized she was too young. Im not even sure if Smalls is a boy or girl. She has been unbalanced since i got her but i thought it was because of her age. She seems to be sleeping fine but i dont know what normal sleeping habbits are for her age. She plays a little bit and seems to be acting fine but started drinkng more on monday night. Sometimes she plays with the air. Also will smoking around her be a cause. She has gotten quite attached to me and i have taken to her also so i dont want to loose her but i cant afford a vet.

Please don’t use a flea collar, they do not have a good history with kittens or cats. Fleas can be dealt with by a bath with Dawn dishsoap and a flea comb, and a warm towel to dry her off afterwards. Smoking or secondhand smoke is not good for anyone, human or animal.

    Good like for small kittens….

Deb has given you great advice and the Messybeast website link is brilliant. These video clips on Youtube on how to bring up orphaned kittens are also really good and will give you all the basics. There is one clip showing you how to get rid of fleas:

If you want to keep her, you will have to start budgeting for a vet. Eventually she will need her shots and to be spayed and there may be unexpected expenses. Some vets will give you your first visit free and costs vary so check around your area. Also check these links for low-cost vet care.

The main risk with diarrhea in very young kittens is that they can get dehydrated really quickly. As long as she keeps on drinking she should be all right but if she stops wanting to eat or becomes limp or lethargic, she will need a vet. Don’t give her any more of the spoiled formula, it may well be causing the diarrhea. Get her some fresh, and dilute it with plain water until the diarrhea stops. This is the link for the tent test (to test for dehydration) and pedialyte, if you should need it: http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/31106

It can be caused by allergies, milk, worms, spoiled food. Except water you should avoid indigestible food in your cat’s diet because these type of food may cause excessive gas or diarrhea. Some veterinarians prescribe a special cat food if the diarrhea is severe. Other common medications include IV fluids to resolve dehydration, antibiotics, and pain medications.

Thank you all. I took Smalls to the vet yesterday and turns out Smalls is a boy. The diarrhea has stopped n istarted feeding him kitten chow. He used the litterbox for the first time this morning and according to the vet is 4-5 weeks old. He isnt dehydrated and started drinking water. As for shots a pet store has a clinic every saturday for low prices so that helps me alot. Today im going to wash Smalls in dawn and hope the fleas go away.
