Hi everyone! i am new here so i am not sure if this is where I should be posting this but i have a serious question. I recent;y adopted two kittens. One of them had diarrhea starting about a week ago, so we took both into the vet on friday. They are both fully vaccinated and are dewormed and have flee medicine. The vet said everything was fine an.d to try giving some wet food and that it would pass. Well it hasn’t passed and i am starting to get worried.
This morning when i got up i saw that one of them had thrown up but i wasn’t sure which one. As i was typing the beginning of this, i saw that it was in fact the other one that was throwing up and she was doing it while in the litter box. I don’t know if she has diarrhea as well or not. Both girls are very active and acting totally normal aside from that. i plan on putting them both on a fast today to see if that helps, but i am worried and it seem s like the vet doesn’t think anything is wrong. Am i over reacting? Suggestions?

It’s great they’ve been vaccinated already and wormed too but some parasites and stubborn little fellas and some kittens need multiple worming doses .. Once it’s been 4 weeks since worming I would get another dose from the vet..

Some of the most persistent parisites will only show when stool is tested.. So if this persist a long time after secon worming ( normal to have loose stool up to a week after worming) then you made need to take a stool sample to vet so a more direct treatment can be given depending on the type of parisites that might be present.

Also I wouldnt fast them.. Not this young but give them boiled chicken for a few days it’s normally recommended to give a bland food with upset tummies and boiled chicken is best.. Make aure to keep them hydrated while they have diarrhea so add water to their food bowl while they eat even if it’s only a few spoons of water..

They have had their second worming about two weeks ago. The vet received a stool sample and said there weren’t any parasites. He is the one that recommended fasting them when I called. They both drink plenty of water seeing as they are very active and usually stop to drink every 10 minutes or so while running the house.
Should I seek a second opinion from another vet? I mean he said that they were clear of any parasites but I don’t really know what else would be making them sick? They are strictly indoor kittens and there isn’t much for them to get into. I will try the boiled chicken, but I tried that once before and one of them wouldn’t touch it(she is super picky).

Ah yes I know all to well the fussy kitten syndrome 🙂

I would seek a second opinion especially if you’ve done everything advised by your vet … For the two of them to be out of sorts at the same time would indicate a parasite or a virus to be present..

Have you been changing their food a lot? Or have they been kept on the same brand? Sometimes even the smallest change in food or food brand can cause persistent diarrhea ..

I did have a case with my Nutini that she had diarrhea for over a month! But we knew the cause of this see she had a very close call after she was spayed and was prescribed some seriously strong antibiotics which not only killed the bad bacteria causing the infection but as expected also killed the good bacteria in her gut .. It’s was horrible and took FOREVER to clear up but it so eventually..

I’m wondering if it might be worth giving them a small amount of goats milk natural yogurt this would have good bacteria and help the colon bacteria to thrive just incase there is an imbalance there that would cause pretty bad diarrhea if they are lacking in good gut bacteria which is essential in producing healthy stool..

It’s definitely worth trying the goats milk yogurt for a couple of days but it has to be goats milk yogurt.. Not cows milk..

Keep in mind that kittens have sensitive tummies. Any rapid change of food can upset them. If you are trying to switch them from one food to another, you do it slowly by mixing small amounts of the new food in with the old food. Increase the ratio of new to old every day. It should take about a week to completely switch over. The only time you would want to just change foods overnight is if your babies are allergic to the food they have been eating or when there is a recall on pet food.

You might also try giving them a bit of plain canned pumpkin, not pie mix with spices.

I have tried the boiled chicken again and same thing happened as last time. The one that was throwing up will eat it but the one that has just diarrhea will not touch it. I have never switched their food I. The whole time I have had them so I know that isn’t the problem. Thank you everyone for your responses.

The one that was throwing up also hasn’t done it again since I first posted this. Both are playing like normal and are tearing through the house with my dog, making as much noise as possible, as usual. 😛 I looked at the store today and couldn’t find just plain pumpkin. Any suggestions as to where to find it? I also will call around tomorrow and see if I can get them into a different vet. We live in an area where there is only one vet nearby, so I’ll have to go about a half hour away for the other one, but if it helps them I will do so.

Hi, Lauren, yes, I think I would try the fast too, sometimes bugs need to be ‘starved’ for 24 hours. I’ll give you the Messybeast page link, this tells you how to do it safely.

If they are both still eating and acting normally, then I think I would just give them a couple more days before I take them to another vet. You could also try giving them some Fortiflora (good intestinal bugs) as well as the yoghurt to try and recolonise the good bacteria in their guts. Did the first vet take stool and/or blood samples? There are two particularly nasty parasites, coccidia and giardia, which I believe need separate tests although both of these make extremely stinky stools. The most important thing is that neither becomes dehydrated from all the diarrhea and vomiting, since this is life threatening, so I’ll give you the pedialyte/tent test page too, but if they are still eating, they should be all right but better safe than sorry. http://dailykitten.com/chat/topic/tent-test-for-dehydration-and-home-made-pedialyte-recipe/

The first vet took a stool sample from both and said it was all clear. I have been keeping them on boiled chicken throughout the day and they are both drinking water fine. Neither are dehydrated. However, one of them won’t eat boiled chicken. Refuses to touch it. I guess it’s too bland for her? She’s a picky picky cat after all :P. What should I do for her? I don’t want her to go hungry.

Believe it or not some cats that refuse to eat boiled chicken will eat boiled turkey.. I think cause there is more of a meaty smell off turkey.. Worth a try 🙂 and don’t forget the goats milk yogurt that will be a good nutritional source and it’s high in L-lysine which is great for bulking up kittens and great for keeping the nasty feline herpes virus at bay.. But your kittens just seem to have tummy issues 🙂

If they are tearing round like normal kittens, there doesn’t sound like much is wrong to me. I didn’t see that post before I posted. I think I would just be keeping an eye on them and get in touch with the second vet if the diarrhea and vomiting continue.

I don’t know about goats’ milk yoghurt but you can get canned goats’ milk in the baking aisle at big supermarkets.

Goats milk yogurt should be in the dairy section of your local shop.. I know it’s easily avalible here in Ireland and they stock it in my small town .. A health food shop might have it too…

That store is actually right down the street from me! I got the yogurt. How much of it am I supposed to give them? And how often? They only had a big thing of it so that is what I got!

Oh a teaspoon Or two in morning after noon and evening should be ok.. It’s goats milk so they will be fine with it.. I bet they’ll love it too 🙂

Be prepared for it to take a bit of time. If it is the case that there’s an imbalance with their good gut bacteria it will take a bit of time for it to correct itself but the yogurt will definitely speed things up..

And as JCat said once they’re both active and playful , eating and drinking I wouldn’t worry too much.. It took at least a month for my Nutini’s stool to get back to normal but I was at a disadvantage all those years ago I didn’t know about goats milk yogurt for cats upset tummy I’m sure if i did things would he been very different..

So glad I was able to help with the store 🙂 the internet is a wonderful thing in sitting at home in Ireland and could check with the store if they had what you needed 😆

Oh my goodness! This is amazing! I switched their food thinking maybe I got a bad batch or something crazy and I mixed a little tiny bit with the boiled chicken. Both will now eat it and they LOVE the yogurt! I have givin it to them twice, one this afternoon and one at their bedtime/nightly feeding and they slurp it up like it is going out of style!!! No throw up today and believe it or not, they have MORE energy this afternoon/night than they have in about two weeks! Even the stool is a little but thinker! Not much but a little bit! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for all the wonderful answers! This yogurt might become a thing we keep on hand for treats and such after they are all better because the eat it like they will never see it again!!! AMAZING!!
